    Amid all of the reaction to Neymar's injury, it is worth remembering that Brazil, five-time winners of the tournament, are into the semi-finals of the World Cup.

    In a chaotic and frenzied tussle with Colombia in Fortaleza, it was a dipping David Luiz free-kick which proved decisive as the hosts won 2-1.

    A president, a basketball star and a super model are among those reacting to Neymar's injury on social media this morning.

    Brazil president Dilma Rousseff said Neymar had the backing of the nation, while the country's former defender Roberto Carlos tweeted his support for a "phenomenon of current football".

    Miami Heat basketball player LeBron James (above left) tweeted:, external "Hate to hear the news on Neymar! What a player. Have a speedy recovery and get well asap man! #HesABeast.

    Brazilian model Gisele posted:, external "Dear Neymar have strength, we are praying that your recovery is quick."

    Brazil's quarter-final with Colombia saw more fouls than any other game at the 2014 World Cup.

    Luiz Filipe Scolari's side committed 31 of the 54 offences in a match which saw the most fouls in a World Cup game since Argentina and Germany racked up 55 in 2006.

    Interestingly, the fixture with the second-highest amount of fouls in the 2014 tournament also featured Brazil as there were 51 in their round of 16 meeting with Chile.

    "The news is devastating for Neymar who was in tears as he was carried off on a stretcher. Luiz Scolari has often complained in this World Cup that his star striker has been hunted, well now he's immobilised following Zuniga's clumsy challenge from behind.

    "It only adds to Brazil's problems because influential defender and captain Thiago Silva is suspended for Tuesday's semi-final with Germany. It's a set-back that overshadows Brazil's passage to the last four and seriously undermines their chances of reaching the final."

    Brazil midfielder Fernandinho says the squad will dedicate any World Cup victory to the stricken Neymar.

    "It's a big loss for us," said the Manchester City man.

    "We need to find a way to stay together and become stronger after losing our greatest player. We will try to win this World Cup and for sure we will dedicate it to Neymar."

    "Brazil will be without their two most important players - leading scorer Neymar and captain Thiago Silva - against Germany," Vickery told BBC Sport.

    "Neymar is a huge loss but it opens up a chance for someone else and I would expect Chelsea forward Willian to get his opportunity now."

    The news breaking overnight is that Brazil forward Neymar has been ruled out of the World Cup with a broken bone in his back sustained in the 2-1 quarter-final win over Colombia.

    He fractured a vertebra in his spine when he was kneed by Juan Zuniga in a challenge that went unpunished.
