Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal says Tim Krul's greater height and reach was the reason he sent the Newcastle keeper on for the World Cup quarter-final penalty shootout win over Costa Rica.
Krul, who is 6ft 4in (1.93m), replaced the 6ft 2in (1.87m) Jasper Cillessen with seconds remaining in the 0-0 draw.
"There is no question about who will start next game, it will be [Jasper] Cillessen. But we felt Krul was the better choice here," said Van Gaal.
"We told Krul that he would be a possibility for the penalties, but we didn't tell Cillessen, as we didn't want to ruin his preparations. We have practised penalties - I believe when you're used to a certain shot you'll be more comfortable taking that shot. It worked out - that was beautiful. I'm a bit proud of that."
An emotional Jorge Luis Pinto said he was proud of his players after Costa Rica's quarter-final shootout defeat by the Netherlands.
"We leave the tournament unbeaten and with our heads held high," said the Costa Rica coach.
"It can happen to make mistakes in a shootout and we did all we could against great players. It's true we defended well and were also a little fortunate, but we had faith in ourselves. There can be a bright future ahead, but we need to analyse and understand the situation calmly."
Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender
"Manchester United fans will be buzzing to see Louis van Gaal making big decisions like that and them coming off. They will be thinking: 'What a manager we have got coming in'.
"I would have thought Jasper Cillessen knew before the game that he would be taken off for a penalty shootout. His reaction to Tim Krul's saves shows you the spirit in that squad - it was all about the team going through and he knows he will start the next game."
Tim Krul on Twitter:, external "Words can't describe how proud I am to be part of this team and this fantastic journey."
You can watch Tim Krul's incredible performance for the Dutch in last night's penalty shootout victory over Costa Rica.
Prior to last night, Krul had saved only two of 20 spot-kicks for club side Newcastle.
Alan Shearer: "Big managers have to make big calls in big games, and that was a huge call by Van Gaal. He has got all the big decisions right at this World Cup."
Rio Ferdinand: "Krul was telling them: 'I know where you're going to put your penalty - I've looked and I know where you are going to go.' I like it, I'd like my keeper to be doing that. It puts them off, and adds a bit of edge to it."

Gary Lineker after the substitution: "To swap a goalkeeper is something I cannot ever recall seeing before. It is slightly insulting, possibly, for Jasper Cillessen but Louis van Gaal is a very single-minded, confident individual - it is a brave call and he will live or die by it."
In a World Cup described by many as the best ever, the drama reached new heights in Salvador on Saturday - and all from 12 yards.
Netherlands' World Cup quarter-final against Costa Rica was goalless and seconds from a penalty shootout.
Dutch coach Louis van Gaal took the unusual step of substituting his goalkeeper, Jasper Cillessen, and sending on Tim Krul. It could scarcely have worked out better.
Here is the story of the shootout told through the eyes of Match of the Day's punditry team.
Inspired? Heroic? Brave? Stupid?
Call it what you like, but after being brought on in the final minute of extra time by Louis van Gaal, Tim Krul's penalty shootout saves sent the Netherlands into the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup.
