Germany forward Lukas Podolski is out of Monday's World Cup last-16 clash against Algeria in Porto Alegre with a thigh injury.

The 29-year-old Arsenal man suffered the injury in Germany's 1-0 win over the USA on Thursday in their final group stage match and an MRI scan revealed a small tear.

"Lukas must rest for two or three days, but should we progress in the tournament it won't be a problem for him to play," says Germany coach Joachim Low.

With Podolski out, Bayern Munich's Mario Gotze is set to take his place on the left flank.

Germany right-back Jerome Boateng also missed training with a knee problem, but Low says it will be "no problem" for the Bayern Munich defender to play.

Costa Rica midfielder Christian Bolanos admits he is not shocked by his side's success at the World Cup.

The Ticos defied the odds to finish top of Group D ahead of Uruguay, Italy and England and will reach the quarter-finals for the first time if they can overcome Greece in Recife.

"I'm not going to say we're surprised by what's happening," he tells Fifa.com., external

"You build momentum and hope to keep it going. It's only a surprise to people who don't know much about Costa Rica.

"I'm the oldest guy in the team. But I feel young now. That's what football can do."

  5. Costa Rica v Greece (21:00 BST)published at 13:32 British Summer Time 29 June 2014

    BBC Radio 5 live

Shaun Custis, Sun chief football writer: "Everyone in England must be thinking how on earth did Greece get into the last 16? But they might have dug in and ground out results and deserve their place.

"Greece won Euro 2004 with one of the greatest rearguard actions in football history. People might say: 'I'd rather England played attacking football and went out, than got through the group playing like that'. But I bet we'd give anything to be in Greece's shoes and in the last 16 today."

Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal wants Portuguese referee Pedro Proenca to allow water breaks during his side's last-16 encounter with Mexico this evening.

Temperatures are expected to reach 30C with intense humidity at the stadium in Fortaleza.

"We hope that we get breaks to drink, otherwise we will put bottles around the pitch for the players," says Van Gaal.

"Dehydration is an element we have looked at in our training. Every people is different, but some can lose up to four kilos during the match, so you have to keep them hydrated as much as possible.

"We hope that the referee will referee in a sensible way."

Henry Winter, the Daily Telegraph's football correspondent: "I think Liverpool will sell Luis Suarez, despite all he's done for them. You look at how they are buying players in similar positions, at a time when they also need to sign defenders, and that seems the likely outcome. If they can get Alexis Sanchez as well, what a signing that will be."

  12. The Suarez saga - who is to blame?published at 12:58 British Summer Time 29 June 2014

Henry Winter, the Daily Telegraph's football correspondent, on Luis Suarez: "Uruguay as a country are in denial over Suarez. The fault in all of this is not the English media or Fifa, it's Luis Suarez. If he hadn't bitten Chiellini, he would have played against Colombia and they might have gone through.

"It was the English-speaking media who voted Suarez Footballer of the Year last season, and it's two members of the English-speaking media who are currently writing his autobiography. Which probably needs a quick update now, I would imagine.

"I feel sympathy with Liverpool, who have tried very hard to help Suarez. They have also sat down with his wife, who is very intelligent and who he worships, to try to sort out the issues."

  13. Cabaye says: Be carefulpublished at 12:44 British Summer Time 29 June 2014

    Yohan CabayeImage source, Getty Images

France midfielder Yohan Cabaye is warning his side against arrogance when they play Monday's last-16 match against Nigeria.

Les Bleus qualified for the knockout stage unbeaten with two wins as they aim to reach a World Cup quarter-final for the first time since 2006.

"It's great to be ambitious. But to say we're going to win the World Cup is a lot," says Cabaye.

"Confidence shouldn't become arrogance because that's when you have problems."

France face Nigeria tomorrow at 17:00 BST, and it's live on BBC One and BBC Radio 5 live.

Shaun Custis, the Sun's chief football writer, on BBC Radio 5 live: "There's been lots of talk about whether James Rodriguez is the new Messi. But in Colombia, the talk is about him being the new Carlos Valderrama. When Colombia lost Radamel Falcao to injury, a lot of people thought: That's it. But they moved Rodriguez inside and he's dictating things. We've almost forgotten about Falcao's absence."

Plenty of World Cup chat under way right now with Mark Chapman on BBC Radio 5 live, who is putting the football world to rights on Copacabana beach with journalists Henry Winter, Sam Wallace and Shaun Custis.

Sam Wallace, the Independent's chief football correspondent, on BBC Radio 5 live: "It was an incredible moment when Neymar scored the fifth penalty in the shootout win over Chile last night. It was almost set up for him to miss. He's not known as a great penalty-taker.

"I've read that when he was at Santos, he wasn't great with penalties and the manager took him off them. But the manager got sacked!

"At this level, football is all about pressure. If you look back to the London Olympics, Jessica Ennis was the poster girl and Neymar is the poster boy here - it's a similar pressure. And he loves it. He walks the walk."

It seems scarcely believable: A Hollywood studio is reportedly considering a remake of the classic football film Escape To Victory. How could anyone possibly hope to match the magic of Pele, Michael Caine, Mike Summerbee and John Wark? Not to mention Sylvester Stallone as a goalkeeper.

Former Ipswich defender Russell Osman, who also starred in the original, tells BBC Radio 5 live: "It will be interesting. I'm just thinking about who will play which role. Michael Caine's role could be taken by Daniel Craig. David Beckham would have to play Bobby Moore. You'd have to have Ibrahimovic up front with Pirlo. But would such iconic figures get involved today?"

If it hasn't got Stallone, Russell, we're not interested.

Colombia coach Jose Pekerman knows a thing or two about leading top-quality players - having managed an Argentina squad containing Lionel Messi and Maxi Rodriguez, among others, at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Here's what Pekerman has to say about James Rodriguez: "I never had any doubts that this was going to be his World Cup.

"What is most surprising is that, at his young age, he does not have any problem doing things football players take many years to understand."
