South American football expert Tim Vickery: "Nobody will be happier than Javier Mascherano. He was in a challenge today and had there been blood I guarantee it would have been blue and white.

"He played for Argentina even before making his senior club debut at River Plate, he has lived through all the frustrations of playing for the national team and here he is in a World Cup final."

"When Ron Vlaar plays for Aston Villa he plays in a back four, and he is not really as good a player. For the national side he plays in a back three and is much better.

"He even tried to put his head in to make a challenge on the ground out wide, he showed total commitment. Everything was good quality defending, but he can do it for Netherlands because he has got people around him helping him."

South American football expert Tim Vickery: "Sergio Romero has played even less than Brazil's Julio Cesar this season, he has been a reserve all season at Monaco, and his selection was one of the controversies of Alejandro Sabella's team.

"Sabella chose to stay with him, Romero is untidy but has come up big in the big moments in this tournament, especially in this penalty shootout."

    Former England defender Martin Keown

"Tim Krul in the last shootout was in the players' faces. Jasper Cillessen seems like a nice boy and got on with the job. It is a bit of gamesmanship, annoying for the penalty taker and it worked for Tim Krul. I feel if Tim Krul had been in goal, Holland would have gone through."

"We will give everything as usual, with humility, work and 100 percent effort."

Lionel Messi did not touch the ball in the penalty area during the 120 minutes. He will need to improve on that one if his side are to lift the trophy on Sunday night.

James Bradley:, external Jasper Cillessen looked like he had no belief in himself at all for penalties. I don't imagine that subbing him off did him any favours.

Naveed Afzal:, external Germany will batter Argentina. They are the most complete team.

Marlo, London: OK I'm confused. After a goalless 240 minutes against Costa Rica and Argentina, eventually going out on penalties, is Louis van Gaal a tactical genius or not?

Tony Cocozza: I'd say van Gaal got that massively wrong. Jasper Cillessen looked hopeless and what was Ron Vlaar doing taking a penalty?
