    Former England international Danny Mills
    BBC Radio 5 live

"For all those people who criticised Wayne Rooney, not just as captain but for being in the team. That's why he's there. He picked the ball up in his own half, ran at the heart of the Swiss defence and laid the ball on a plate for Raheem Sterling, who put a brilliant ball in for Welbeck who gambled and got in that position.

"The front three have deserved a lot of credit. It came off his shin but it doesn't matter how he scored it. He was in the position."

Raheem Sterling excites again, bursting forward down the left and spinning away from two men. He is the difference maker for England. Build the team around this lad.

Spain are working out their World Cup trauma against Macedonia. Manchester City playmaker David Silva has netted to make it 4-1 to the hosts in Valencia.

Luxembourg, whose last competitive win came against Northern Ireland almost exactly a year ago, still lead Belarus 1-0 thanks to Lars Gerson's strike.

Roy Hodgson was beaming as that ball hit the net. Quite right too, the three men at the apex of his diamond were all involved. What a big save from Joe Hart too, moments before the opener at the other end.

Charles: And that's why Wenger bought Welbeck.

  9. GOALpublished at 20:59 British Summer Time 8 September 2014

There's that end-to-end stuff as England forge ahead with a goal not unlike Daniel Sturridge's against Italy at the World Cup! Raheem Sterling nicks the ball back in midfield, plays a one-two and then gets on his bike down the left. Can Sterling deliver the cross? You bet.

Wonderful ball in and Danny Welbeck is in there to score off his shinpad. £16m shins...

  10. GREAT SAVE!published at 20:59 British Summer Time 8 September 2014

Great save indeed! A real hammer of a strike from Haris Seferovic on his left side, hit like a dream, but Joe Hart watches it all the way, moves his feet well to push the ball away with a strong left wrist.

It's end-to-end stuff, very watchable game for international football.

It is in fact Gokhan Inler who takes it, whipped in and a shot at the back stick is charged down by Fabian Delph. England clear well again and Raheem Sterling is almost in on the counter. Great pace but well played Valon Behrami to track him.

  12. Postpublished at 20:56 British Summer Time 8 September 2014

Good volume in Basel now as both sides continue to look promising. Leighton Baines is clumsy and coughs up a free-kick in a dangerous position. Xherdan Shaqiri fancies it...

Can't miss chances like that at this level. Thats one great save and two decent opportunities spurned.

The performance of Phil Jones is splitting opinion

Rob from Newbury: Jones has made ONE error. Cahill, Stones, and Baines have each made several. Sterling has been dreadful, Henderson non-existent.

Steve via Twitter: , externalHow is Jones still on the pitch? What about Stoke man Ryan Shawcross?

  15. CLOSE!published at 20:54 British Summer Time 8 September 2014

Better stuff from England as Jordan Henderson gets forwards for the first real time, he finds a team-mate too with a cutback from the right, Raheem Sterling takes a swing and misses the ball but it almost goes in off the shins of a Swiss defender behind him! Just a yard wide in the end but a good chance for Sterling.

Tough first half for Phil Jones, who might feel right now like he has the weight of the world on his shoulders. Or just Haris Seferovic.

And now a decent opening at the other end as the Swiss go full-back to full-back, Ricardo Rodriguez picks out Stephan Lichtsteiner arriving at pace, but the Juve man leans back and skies it into the stands. Good tempo to this one again.

Chris in Poole: Would Huddlestone be a better option at the base of the diamond than Wilshere? Anonymous. Needs to drop between the centre backs and dictate.

  19. CLOSE!published at 20:49 British Summer Time 8 September 2014

Almost the opener for England! Neat and tidy play in midfield releases Jack Wilshere into the box, he gets a low shot off and it is deflected just wide of the far corner. Very, very close!
