Arsenal patiently build an attack at the Bridge which ends with Calum Chambers sending across a looping ball from the right and Thibaut Courtois is on hand to cut out the danger.
Poor communication costs Southampton a chance to take the lead. Sadio Mane squares the ball into the box and with Morgan Schneiderlin lining up a shot from 12 yards out, Graziano Pelle gets in the midfielder's way and the opportunity is lost. Teething problems for the Saints.
John: It's time to find out if Danny Welbeck really is the real deal or not as Arsenal's leading man.
Louis: As much as the optimist in me hopes for another 6-0 victory for Chelsea, lightning rarely strikes twice. I still think Chelsea will win though.
Everton manager Roberto Martinez to BBC Sport: "John Stones has an ankle ligament problem. It's too early to know the extent of it but it must be something serious for him to come off.
"We didn't switch off for United's second goal. Steven Pienaar was on the ground and needed to come off. The fourth official is well aware of this. I felt David De Gea made two world-class saves that stopped us getting a positive result.
"The margins are very small. We are not hiding from the fact want we should have more points. - we've dropped too many. We've played four of the top six this season but we're getting sharper and stronger. We have the international break now and we need to come back and start getting wins."
Kemlo:, external Despite Diego Costa's injury Arsenal's leaky defence will let him score two or three. I can see a rout coming on...
Moyes Ayeni:, external Come on Gooners! Costa and Cesc Fabregas are nothing, we've got Danny Wellbeck, Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.
Southampton are pressing back Tottenham at the Lane. They are out-Poching Poch.
Arsenal register the first effort on goal - but it's not on target, Alexis Sanchez flashing a 35-yarder past the post. Good intent, though.
After a 15-minute delay, we're finally under way at Stamford Bridge.
Former Scotland international Pat Nevin at White Hart Lane
BBC Radio 5 live
"It's just beginning to come alive a little here, particularly down Tottenham's right side. Danny Rose has been exposed there a few times already and several crosses have come in.
"There also seems to be a real belief and understanding between the Southampton front pair of Graziano Pelle and Sadio Mane. Every time Pelle gets the ball Mane bombs on past him."
There a touch of the Rickie Lamberts about Graziano Pelle as he sits in the hole and directs Southampton attacks with all the composure of a traffic cop stood on a roundabout near Spaghetti Junction. He's scheming away for the Saints and none of the Spurs defenders are picking him up.
Graziano Pelle and Sadio Mane are linking up well for Southampton in the final third, and the latter is played in down the flank by the Italian's pass but his pullback is cut out by Younes Kaboul before Steven Davis can arrive on the end of it.
John Murray
BBC commentator at Stamford Bridge
"When Cesc Fabregas' name was read out over the speakers here many of the Arsenal fans actually applauded. They will be under way here soon after a 15-minute delay."
Chief football writer Phil McNulty at Stamford Bridge
"The delay allows Arsenal's players to come out for a second warm-up - but not too many balls around so it involved lots of running instead."
Rob, Wales: Hold your horses everyone, there's no Manchester United revival yet! This was a game that could easily have been 2-5 in Everton's favour. Let's see how United deal with Chelsea, City and Arsenal before we jump to any conclusions!
Chris, Cheshire: David De Gea the best in the Premier League? Try watching Hugo Lloris - produces the equivalent week in week out.
Excellent from Southampton as they sweep forward down the right and Graziano Pelle plays a delightful ball to the back stick where Sadio Mane is lurking, but Tottenham defender Kyle Naughton produces a fantastic block to deny the Saints striker a certain goal.
Tottenham go close through Jan Vertonghen, whose header is cleared off the line by Saints defender Ryan Bertrand.
Batmanu Eboue:, external I'm willing to bet my house on an Arsenal win today. Feel free to laugh at me now, because I'll be the one laughing at 4pm.
Jonatan L:, external Arsenal best when facing an attacking side. Deep opponent defending and rapid counter expose them. Fearful for another 6-0.
Jay:, external Expecting a cracker of a game at Stamford Bridge. Hope Chelsea play like a big team and Arsenal respond likewise!
A good start from both teams at the Lane, with Tottenham currently on the attack. Neither side has registered an effort on goal yet though.
Chief football writer Phil McNulty at Stamford Bridge
"It is understood the kick-off here has been delayed because a flare was let off near the entrances at the away section of Stamford Bridge, requiring entry into the stadium to be slowed down."
We're hearing that John Stones sustained an ankle ligament injury at Old Trafford. No idea yet if that rules him out of the England squad.
