"When he was manager of Wales, John Toshack used to tell the senior players to watch the U21s, it was great for the young players, it gave them the motivation to get into that senior side. The prize is the senior side. When I was 19, 20, scoring for Arsenal, I wanted to be in the senior side. It's great for players like Luke Shaw if he can get two games in the U21s, fitness-wise too. But it is hard to come back into it once you've had a taste of the senior side."

England U21 manager Gareth Southgate is on Football Focus and has been discussing West Brom striker Saido Berahino, who is the current top-scoring Englishman in the Premier League this season and has just been named in the U21 squad to face Croatia in the Euro 2015 play-off...

"He has been a pleasure to work with fro the first camp. We could see how exciting a talent he is. He has great pace and a superb work ethic. He wants to work at his game and stay behind to do extra finishing. He has every chance of making a success of his career."

Southgate has also been discussing the use of young English talent within the U21 and senior England squad...

"If the fixtures are the right quality and we don't think they will play for the senior team we think it is better for them to play for us than sitting on the bench for the seniors. I want to see young English players develop. We have exciting things happening and we have a depth of talent coming through at every level."

Leeds are playing a high line today, pressing Sheffield Wednesday back and the result is Alex Mowatt being able to steal possession in the middle of the park, drive forward and play in Souleymane Doukara whose angled shot trickles just wide of the far post.

A good chance for Leeds now, with a nice ball being threaded through but Alex Mowatt sees his effort charged down by the onrushing Keiren Westwood. The offside flag should have gone up but, still, that was a good opportunity for the hosts.

Sheffield Wednesday's plan of attack is clear - they are loading that right flank and another ball is swung across to the big man at the back stick but Atdhe Nuhiu can't take advantage under pressure from Sam Byram and the chance comes to nothing.

Discussing Jack Rodwell, who joined Sunderland from Man City in the summer.

"It's difficult to turn down a big move. Jack Rodwell will have trebled his wages when he joined Man City from Everton, but he needs games - 101 matches in seven seasons is not enough, and that is why he left Man City. Now he is playing regularly. Sunderland may be struggling for wins, but you can see why he has moved on."

Discussing Jack Rodwell, who joined Sunderland from Man City in the summer.

England U21 manager Gareth Southgate: "For all young English players, that decision to move to a top four club is a better one to take when you are an established professional. It can be difficult to break in otherwise. [The move to Sunderland] is good for Jack Rodwell. He wanted to go and play football, he wants to develop."

Victory for Leeds today would lift them to within a point of the play-off places while Sheffield Wednesday would draw level with fourth-placed Derby if they bagged the three points. Plenty at stake then.
