"Branislav Ivanovic was held, and there was no other reason for him to go down there. We have seen penalties given for that, like the one awarded against Stoke City's Ryan Shawcross last weekend. If you give the one against Shawcross you have to be giving that one."

  2. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 16:39 Greenwich Mean Time 26 October 2014

Branislav Ivanovic is body-slammed to the floor in the box by Chris Smalling as the pair of them await Cesc Fabregas's delivery into the United area. It was a decent shout, very decent, but nothing doing.

He chases down Phil Dowd to protest at the referee's inaction, but the man in black is not for turning.

"We were talking about defensive errors before the game and now we have seen two in a row. The one from Marcos Rojo was terrible, and then Daley Blind couldn't get the ball under control and Didier Drogba knicked it off him. It is still just that final pass, from both teams, in key areas, that is lacking.

"The Chelsea defensive unit, when they are set, is very difficult to break down. Marouane Fellaini is playing like a second striker when Manchester United are in possession, but they haven't found him with a ball into the box."

There is not too much between the sides in terms of possession but Manchester United have been a touch more productive with the ball, they have had three shots on target compared to Chelsea's none.

  5. Postpublished at 16:36 Greenwich Mean Time 26 October 2014

Chelsea don't need to get Cesc Fabregas advanced if they keep getting gifted possession like that.

Marcos Rojo and then Daley Blind misplace passes in quick succession and, with plenty of their colleague pressing forward, they are almost caught short.

Some scrambling defence and heavy touches from Willian and Didier Drogba get them off the hook.

Cesc Fabregas has been kept too busy tracking Juan Mata and Adnan Januzaj to get forward and add to his assist stack for the season.

Manchester United have been dictating the tempo in the last five.

BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty at Old Trafford

"Proper heavyweight slug fest - and Chelsea have young keeper Thibaut Courtois to thank for still being level after that fine save from Robin van Persie.

"Angel Di Maria is dropping deep to attempt to cause problems for Chelsea and the angled balls into the box that have become his trademark since his arrival at Old Trafford have posed a threat to Jose Mourinho's side.

"Didier Drogba is currently struggling to re-enact his old Chelsea glory days as replacement for injured Diego Costa - but this is the big match environment he has made his playground throughout his career and he must be watched."

"Adnan Januzaj has been quality so far. Passing of the highest order. Thibaut Courtois has been the difference. Couple of top saves."

Vinny Person:, external Watching Manchester United and Chelsea play is almost like a different league to the earlier kick-off. Ball to feet, fierce tempo.

oletuM M R:, external I'm sorry but Robin van Persie should be doing better with that (see 23 mins), especially if he is supposedly first choice.

Angel Di Maria rides a robust challenge from Nemanja Matic, but, after clattering the Serb on the way through, both need a spot of attention.

A few soothing words and they are both up and running.

"The game has livened up! Adnan Januzaj is a growing influence in the game, he played through a wonderful pass to Robin van Persie, and later went past Cesc Fabregas with ease.

"Marouane Fellaini has been given licence to go forward. Every time Manchester United break that man is there waiting for a good ball into the box. Just the final touch is still lacking from both teams at the minute though."

Luke Shaw has made a good start today. Adventurous in attack and he shows he can do the business at the other end, matching Willian for pace and sliding in to rob the Brazilian with a perfectly-timed tackle.

  13. GREAT SAVE!published at 16:25 Greenwich Mean Time 26 October 2014

Manchester United carve out the first chance of real quality.

A superb angled run in behind by Robin van Persie, a perfectly weighted ball from Adnan Januzaj to pick him out, but the Dutchman's low shot is blocked by the onrushing Thibaut Courtois.

The Chelsea goalkeeper was out of his blocks fast there and he needed to be.

"We've seen very little of Robin van Persie or Didier Drogba so far. The game is very congested in midfield and there has not been any service up to either striker. The Manchester United fans seem quite flat. We can only really hear the Chelsea fans singing."

Harry Pannell:, external All the emphasis is on Manchester United needing a decent centre-back, but in my opinion Rafael has been awful and they truly need a right-back.

KoloKK:, external How long did it take Marouane Fellaini to grow that mane back?

Chelsea don't seem to fear Manchester United's midfield being able to pass the ball around them. They are pressing high and hard, attempting to strangle the supplylines at source.

All very different from the rearguard actions we have seen at Anfield and the Etihad in the past.

That is how you do it Rafael.

Nemanja Matic steps across and firmly shuts the door on Angel di Maria as the Manchester United winger attempts to follow the ball beyond him.

Not quite enough for a yellow, just enough to halt the attack and buy his side some time.

  19. Champagne for Sunderlandpublished at 16:18 Greenwich Mean Time 26 October 2014

Sunderland clinched promotion to the top flight of the Women's Super League with a 4-0 win at Millwall Lionesses on the last day of the season.

A dramatic climax to the campaign had looked on the cards for an hour of the afternoon as title rivals Doncaster Rovers Belles were thrashing London Bees.

The Belles started the day two points behind the Black Cats, but with a far superior goal difference which they boosted with a huge 9-0 victory.

Sunderland led only 1-0 at the break, but three goals in a five-minute spell midway through the second half proved conclusive.

  20. Big match analysispublished at 16:18 Greenwich Mean Time 26 October 2014

BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty at Old Trafford

"No holding back by either Chelsea or Manchester United in the opening phase with chances in the opening moments. Jose Mourinho is stalking his technical area while Louis van Gaal, as ever, is sitting well away from the action clutching his clipboard.

"Eden Hazard has already emerged as the threat for Chelsea, causing problems and forcing Rafael into a daft booking. No parking the bus from Mourinho here.

"As for United, Juan Mata is lurking in the spaces behind Robin van Persie and has already set up a chance for Angel Di Maria, although he has been running into the formidable barrier of Nemanja Matic."
