Alan:, external Manchester United were fantastic, some very good performances in there by Chris Smalling, Marouane Fellaini and Luke Shaw. Totally deserved a draw.

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has told Sky Sports that Marouane Fellaini, whose header led to Robin van Persie's late leveller, was Branislav Ivanovic's man at set-pieces.

"Maybe Branislav Ivanovic's dismissal made it more difficult," he said.

"Fellaini is his man and I think Kurt Zouma took him in the end.

"Fellaini just told me in the dressing room that he was making runs at the far post, but he got tired of not getting the ball and so came into the middle for the final free-kick.

"Maybe at the end of the season we can be happy with a point, but at the moment we cannot, not the way that it happened."

The full slow-motion multi-angle review of Branislav Ivanovic's two booking is being played out the screen in front of me.

Both for fouls on Angel di Maria, neither particularly nasty. I think that Phil Dowd could have cooled his jets and left the Chelsea defender on the pitch for the final set-piece.

Would it have made a difference to the result? It might well have done.

Martin, a Spurs fan, says: "The problem is not the players, it's the owner. Every decision has been a bad one."

And after Chelsea were controversially not awarded a penalty at Old Trafford, Wrighty proposes there should be an official specifically looking for holding in the box from set pieces. Agree?

Steve, Reading: It's funny that Manchester United fans are suddenly catching on to Marouane Fellaini a season late. Us Evertonians told you he was a number 10 and proved it a couple of seasons back when he terrified the last decent defence you had. Pay attention in future lads.

Robin van Persie's celebration - throwing his shift skyward - earned him yellow card even though he was wearing a sensible vest underneath.

He was one of three United players booked.

Chelsea racked up six with Branislav Ivanovic, Cesc Fabregas, Eden Hazard, Oscar, Nemanja Matic and Didier Drogba keeping referee Phil Dowd busy.

Six bookings in one game also mean a Premier League fine for Roman Abramovich to pay out of petty cash.

Harry Partridge:, external Chelsea play QPR next (who've won seven points in their last four games v Chelsea), followed by Liverpool. Could be the start of a drop in form?

Graham Jack Thirkhill:, external Consider the great quality Chelsea have got v the mediocre back-line of Manchester United. Chelsea failed today.

Aaron:, external United earned a deserved draw. There are three teams with a great defence: Chelsea, Southampton and Plymouth Argyle!

Plymouth, who beat Cheltenham Town 3-0 at home on Saturday, have conceded just eight goals in 15 games and are sixth in League Two.

The lady in the white furry coat has spotted him.

Former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes, who is training with United as he recovers from a knee injury, was in the stands alongside Wayne Rooney, Jonny Evans and Ander Herrera today.

Given David De Gea's excellent performance, he might hold back on signing any contract to sit on the bench for United.

Luka Prebil:, external For the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson left I had a feeling that we could actually get something in added time!

Blueforever:, external Many positives for Chelsea. Still at the top, six points clear of title rivals, next game likely to win at QPR, and were close to a win.

Rob Dawson:, external Branislav Ivanovic gets rugby tackled in the area. No pen. Then gets two "yellow cards". I wonder what he said to the referee.

  11. Manager reactionpublished at 18:46 Greenwich Mean Time 26 October 2014

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal:

"We had a lot of chances but we don't finish these chances, then Chelsea make the first goal and it becomes much more difficult as Chelsea play possession football, make the pitch big and we have to run and run.

"We kept together and I think we deserved it. I have seen that we could have beat Chelsea, I'm saying that nearly every game but this is against Chelsea who are a top team and we were at least equal.

"The most pleasing thing is we are showing again we are believing in making a goal in spite of the result being bad. 1-0 behind it is fantastic the players are running until the 90th minute to equalise or win."

    ...and contrast.

    Rafael touch graphic

Luke Shaw's average touch graphic (top) shows that he got forward further and more often than team-mate Rafael on the other flank (bottom).

That was the £27m teenager's best performance since his summer move from Southampton.

Karl, north Wales: Would have taken this result before the start of the game, will hopefully build confidence and most important of all it shows Manchester United still possess that never say die spirit!

Stu, London: It's very sad to see United celebrating like they have won the league. Chelsea a class apart today. Shame the referee bridged the gap.

Nick McAndrew: For a team full of flair Chelsea play the most boring tactics and rightly got what they deserved. And this is coming from a Manchester City fan!

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal speaking to BBC's Match of the Day:

"I've said to the players we could have won but nevertheless we didn't and that's our fault. When you can do that against the best team in this league at this moment it is a good sign.

"I'm not pleased as I still have the feeling we could have won today and that we don't take our opportunities at the moment.

"They scored in the second half then we have to fight again until the last minute. I am grateful for the support of the fans as they also admire the spirit in this team.

"The red card doesn't change anything as it was the last minute and we only had the free-kick to take. OK, it came from the free-kick but only if he was marking Fellaini, You will have to ask Jose Mourinho that."

  15. Manager reactionpublished at 18:29 Greenwich Mean Time 26 October 2014

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho on his side's display:

"The second half was much better. From the start of the first half we showed we wanted to win. In the second half we didn't give them chances they wanted. To come here to Old Trafford the way we did - it was fantastic to my boys."

About the weekend's results that saw rivals Liverpool and Manchester City slip up:

"We don't look to others, we look to ourselves. Old Trafford is one most dangerous fixtures we've had. The result is not the result we want, but the way we performed means we don't need to look to others. After nine matches, to be top of league with four points difference. We have also played away at Manchester United and Manchester City."

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho speaking to BBC's Match of the Day:

"The red card, I was seeing it coming. If I have to speak about the second yellow [for Ivanovic] I have to speak about lots of things - the penalty that Ivanovic should have been given [under the challenge of Chris Smalling], the accumulation of yellow cards, the throw-ins. I know I speak always with my heart and get in trouble."

About the performance of 36-year-old goalscorer Didier Drogba:

"For me as a coach it's not fair to speak about Didier because my team was fantastic. They were brilliant."

Kenny D:, external Stop crying Chelsea fans. Stop blaming the referee. I saw quite a few Chelsea players hitting the deck easily enough as well. It was a good game overall. I think United proved to themselves that they can play with the top clubs. Wouldn't you be excited too for rescuing points against the team that has been the class of the league thus far? Blaming the ref is weak and bad sportsmanship. Face it, Chelsea couldn't hang on. Fair enough. Good job United!

Daniel Lonergan:, external United can mathematically win the league so yes technically we are in the title race. Playing so well and drawing with the league's in-form team shows that we are capable.

Louis van Gaal is now taking his turn in front of the media.

The Manchester United manager is asked if Branislav Ivanovic's dismissal made any difference to the final result.

"Naaaah, I don't think so," he drawls.
