Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini is careful with his words when asked about the numerous penalty calls in the game. He also says there are 78 points to play for and the title race has plenty of distance to run.

Stephen MCP Brogarth:, external Best Manchester United performance post-Ferguson. At times looked 10 v 10 and they were unlucky not to get a draw. I'm an Evertonian by the way.

ScarletVarlet:, external This year 13 points, Last year 17 points, as of 2 November. Moyes had more than van Gaal (who spent £150m).

Shohidur Rahman:, external There is no doubt 13 points is unacceptable after spending all that money. But I still think we'll finish fourth because it's so open.

Alex, Scotland: People keep going on about how bad Manchester United have been for the past season and a bit. Which they have been. But let's not forget City beat United 6-1 when Sir Alex was in charge. City have merely overtaken United and people need to accept that.

  4. Bad times for Unitedpublished at 15:36 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2014

A haul of 13 points from 10 games is Manchester United's worst start to a campaign since 1986-87, when they had eight at this stage and finished the season 11th.

That season they sacked Big Ron and brought in Alex Ferguson of course...

"You look at Manchester City and they are six points off Chelsea, but considering how poor they have been, you think they will come good at some stage and so that has to be positive. I don't think Chelsea will go unbeaten this season, they will have a blip.

"This week Louis van Gaal was saying United can still win the league, but that is put to bed for them now. The best they can achieve is third or fourth place and a spot in the Champions League."

City are still six points shy of leaders Chelsea, and two behind Southampton. But this win will give Manuel Pellegrini's side a boost in confidence.

BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty

"Chaotic, short on quality but compelling. Manchester City deserved their win but how United will regret the actions of Chris Smalling for his stupid sending off and there will be ramifications from Marcos Rojo's injury.

"City's win keeps Chelsea very much in range, albeit six points ahead. They simply had to get the job done with United stripped bare in defence and the main man, Sergio Aguero, delivered again with his tenth league goal of the season.

"There has been a patchwork feel to some of Manchester United's season and there will continue to be so after today."

    Football writer Patrick Barclay

"Chelsea will have been looking at this game and laughing their heads off. They are a level way above both of these sides. Can you imagine either Manchester United or Manchester City even getting close to Chelsea?

"The real danger for Chelsea now though is over confidence. Jose Mourinho will be desperate for that not to happen and I think that is what he was alluding to when he was talking about the crowd at Stamford Bridge."

"Manchester United are level on points with West Brom. Don't get me wrong, I think Alan Irvine is doing a great job there, but United have spent £150m on new players and that is unacceptable. When are we going to start asking serious questions of Louis van Gaal in press conferences because I haven't heard it yet."

  11. Player reactionpublished at 15:30 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2014

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, speaking to Sky Sports: "There is no real explanation for it [United finishing strongly]. They played well towards the end, we had most of the chances but you miss a couple and you can seem to lose control of the game. Ultimately we stood strong, a clean sheet and a good derby win.

On this being the first win after two successive defeats: "You can only think about the next game and improve performances, we will gradually get there again. We are working everyday to make sure we are a better team than last year.

"The derby win is massive. For a minute, the league doesn't matter. It is a boost for us and we will do our job again in the Champions League on Wednesday."

  12. 'This is massive'published at 15:28 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2014

"The league doesn't matter for a minute, the Champions League doesn't matter - winning the derby is massive and it gives us our city back."

Those are the words of triumphant City captain Vincent Kompany.

"Manchester City have seen it out but there are positives Manchester United can take from their second-half performance. When Sergio Aguero was brought off he was not happy at all. He threw his firsts down in the air, because he wanted to get the second goal, but Manuel Pellegrini decided to shore it up. They weren't successful in doing that and have been lucky to get the win in the end."

"City's recent run of relatively poor results is over. You can see from the reaction of the players what it means.

"They have been made to work hard for it but it's the blue moon that is rising above this city again tonight."
