"We talked about the shoot on sight policy from Manchester United. On this occasion the ball was played to Mata and he took it onto his left foot and took a shot. And to me the goalkeeper made a mess of it, despite a slight deflection. United have the goal now, and Louis van Gaal will be feeling relief more than anything else. Speroni, clearly, feels he might have done better with that."

    Live on the BBC

Over in the FA Cup we could be in line for some shocks, with Dover, Chester and Cheltenham all beating teams above them in the football pyramid.

Meanwhile, Conference South side Hemel Hempstead are holding their own against League Two Bury, and are level at 1-1.

Will they hold out for what would surely be a lucrative replay? Find out by following our live updates here.

The substitute has done it! A truly forgettable game is illuminated by the left foot of Juan Mata, who crashes in a shot from 22 yards, Julian Speroni should probably do better but can only help it on its way into the corner.

Andre Gray's second of the day extends Brentford's lead at Millwall to 2-0 but the home side hit back immediately with two rapid-fire goals through Danny Shittu. He got both in a remarkable few moments at the Den. The Lions looked wiped out but now it's game on.

Rudy Gestede now has 10 goals for the season as his latest draws Blackburn level at Brighton. It's one of those headers which look even better because it drops in off the underside of the bar.

Daryl Murphy has just headed over for Ipswich as the fifth-place side take on Watford in fourth, that one remains 0-0.

  5. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 16:23 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2014

Steve Bruce has seen enough, and he makes a triple substitution of sorts - Hatem Ben Arfa, Gaston Ramirez and Stephen Quinn coming on within minutes of each other.

John: It's Manchester United's pace, or lack thereof, which disturbs me most. The days of powering through teams is long gone. It's more like torturing them into a mistake now!

Dan, Croydon: Are Manchester United playing alone or are there two teams out there? They can't be making it difficult to play on their own. Give some credit to Crystal Palace.

John, Belfast: When are the press going to give Louis van Gaal the stick that he deserves? United are useless. He has performed worse than David Moyes with better players!

West Ham continue to patiently probe - which is a change in itself. They aren't going long, playing nicely but the lack of cutting edge is apparent. As blunt as you like.

Kevin Nolan enters the fray. Sniff one out?

Ryan Bertrand has been Southampton's best player today and he tries his luck with a daisy-cutter which Kasper Schmeichel is equal to.

  10. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 16:19 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2014

Plenty of wrestling at the Stretford End as Marouane Fellaini and Damien Delaney tussle for a corner - nothing given, both players very hands-on.

Juan Mata is introduced for Adnan Januzaj.

Suddenly, Leicester are beginning to grow in confidence and cause Southampton a few problems of their own. Their good play brings a corner, but it's too long from Matty James and the Saints survive.

Andy Carroll looks on from the West Ham bench. Is the time right to send on the big man?

There's already some desperate, bodies-in-the-way defending from Burnley as they throw all sorts of body parts in the way to stop Hull on the edge of the area. Half an hour to go.

"It's been brighter from Manchester United, and a goal will make a huge difference. But they're a team striving for Europe, so they should expect to be able to score."

Sam: The Manchester United team and the fans can only have the manager to blame. He had the money to buy defenders, and he bought too many forwards! Robin van Persie is past his best days for me.

Rob, Milton Keynes: Manchester United fans need to relax. We were good against Chelsea, and Chris Smalling ruined it against City. We're not miles from third with a heap of defenders injured. And let's give Adnan Januzaj time to develop please.

Daniel, Darlington: I bet no one tipped Burnley to end today's goal drought!

  17. CLOSE!published at 16:13 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2014

Marouane Fellaini wins a corner, Juan Mata is warming up. Can anyone break through for Manchester United?

So close! Wonderful climb and header from Fellaini, cleared off the line.

"The offside decision was spot on (see 16:09) but Sadio Mane doesn't need to be offside there. Dusan Tadic puts the ball in from the left, and Mane is looking right across the line. He doesn't have to creep offside - if he had been more patient he could have timed his run onto it."

Brett Flanders:, external Out of all the teams to break the deadlock, Burnley, lacking the goals and prowess, score.

DSSBrooks:, external If United don't win, Van Gaal should be under pressure. No excuses for United this year - £150m spent, no European distractions.

Ajay Patel:, external All these United pessimists, give it time. The players are still learning to play together. Goals will come.
