"Palace don't want to give anything away too early and give Manchester United and the home crowd confidence. They need to be firm defensively and to try to create some uncertainty among the United back line."

It has been all Manchester United so far, with Robin van Persie putting himself about up front and winning a free-kick in a decent position. Denis Irwin/David Beckham range...

"I watched West Ham last season and they could not score a goal for love nor money. Carlton Cole was up front, he's an honest player and decent in the air but he wasn't covering the ground he could years ago. But Sam Allardyce's side have now scored in every one of their last nine league games. And they are defending well too. Alex Song has been brilliant for them in intercepting play since joining on loan."

Battle of the Claret-and-blues at Upton Park, and it's Big Sam's big improvers who make the early running. Tom Cleverley makes his mark for Villa with a strong early challenge.

Southampton have a habit of starting quickly, and they've come out swinging against Leicester who can't get the ball off their hosts. Still no real chances yet, though.

Can Burnley finally get that first win of the season today? They have started well - Danny Ings getting behind the Hull defence and firing a shot just wide.

  7. CLOSE!published at 15:02 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2014

Adnan Januzaj has the first sight of goal at a subdued Old Trafford, spearing a shot over the top from the corner of the penalty area. No question of United's attacking prowess - but can that makeshift back four hold up to scrutiny?

"The big thing for Manchester United now is to try to get themselves back into top four contention. The fans and the manager still think there is a real opportunity for them to be able to do it, and this is the kind of match where they will be expecting three points.

"But football doesn't work like that, despite Crystal Palace's recent dip."

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers on this team's late penalty appeal on BT Sport: "We worked so hard in the game but we need those decisions that are obvious, it was a clear, clear penalty. I was very disappointed because the players gave everything in the game. We deserved at least a point for sure.

"You need that wee bit of luck going for you and it isn't at the moment. It has been a tough week.

"We have to keep working hard and hope get some of our injured players back in. There is no magic formula but I have a brilliant group of players here. We will be ready and firing after the international break."

  12. Southampton to finish in the top four?published at 14:57 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2014

    Former Portsmouth striker Steve Claridge
    Final Score

"Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal, and to an extent Manchester United too, they have all regressed since last season. Southampton are playing better than any of those four sides, and I would say they are the main protagonists in the Premier League after Manchester City and Chelsea."

  13. Manager reactionpublished at 14:56 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2014

More from Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho: "I was on the bench in the second half and for me it did not look the normal pressure you feel at Anfield because my team is fantastic.

"I thought Liverpool tried everything, they did well, but Chelsea was the best team. My previous team started winning in 2004-05 and the same team won year after year, trophies after trophies.

"This is a new team, a new era for Chelsea. We are obviously happy with the squad and the quality of football but no team gets into history without trophies and, at the moment, this team has no trophies."

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, speaking to BT Sport: "It was a fantastic performance. The players as individuals all had a great performance and as team they were in control. One point at Anfield, most teams would accept that as a great result, this team did not accept that and I am really, really pleased.

"I have to give special word to Ramires and Fabregas but also the medical department, they did fantastic work on them. Fabregas maybe is a problem for the next match. The medical department, with me, took the risk for this game but they are all examples of this team at the moment, working for everyone."

"Manchester United's problems at the back are accentuated today with Chris Smalling being banned. Louis van Gaal has got young Patrick McNair playing there with Danny Blind in defence too. Michael Carrick will shield them in deep midfield.

"But keeping that area just in front of David De Gea secure is very important in Premier League football, and how they start the game is so important."

    Final Score

"It's not been great viewing for the Manchester United supporters this season. Louis van Gaal has spend plenty of money, but they have not had a settled defence. Today Paddy McNair will play but at least with Daley Blind, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini there is some protection. And United will have to be strong defensively. We know Crystal Palace have pace through Jason Puncheon and Yannick Bolasie. It will be a fascinating game. United cannot underestimate this Palace side."

"Crystal Palace have not won a league game at Old Trafford since December 1989. A month earlier and 25 years ago to this very weekend, the Berlin Wall fell.

"The red flag of communism was lowered over Eastern Europe. For a quarter of a century Manchester United's red flag has flown proudly over English football.

"Some question whether it'll ever fly as high again. It's a matter of time. The Louis van Gaal era has not started well."

MOTD's John Roder at St Mary's

"Southampton's start to the season has been extraordinary - they come into this match against Leicester in second place in the Premier League table and having lost only one of their last 11 fixtures in all competitions.

"The Saints are playing vibrant, exciting football, scoring plenty of goals and that is combined with a miserly defence. A perfect recipe."
