"I can understand where Stuart McCall is coming from, they defended well enough but they only had one shot and it was just the ball breaking from a tackle."

"We talked about not losing an early goal and that's exactly what we do. I feared the worst but we showed great commitment and desire. We nullified Aberdeen, so I'll take a positive from that and there's a determination in the dressing room to kick on from here and win more than we lose over the next 11 games."

Former Motherwell defender Craig Paterson on BBC Radio Scotland

"Motherwell were industrious but had nothing in the final third. They never looked to have the guile to create anything, everything was played in front of Aberdeen."

It's worth noting that BBC Scotland's Jim Spence opened that interview with Derek McInnes, with a diplomatic "That was murder..."

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes on BBC Radio Scotland

"We've played far better this season and tossed away points. What was required tonight more than anything was a really solid performance and we didn't give Motherwell any opportunities. It was back to basics in a way. Our discipline was a positive for me."

Aberdeen nudge up a place to fifth in the Premiership, overtaking Celtic, although the champions have played two games less.

What now for Motherwell? Last season's runners-up are a shadow of their former selves. Ross County are the only team in the Premiership with fewer points.

So it's back to winning ways for the Dons thanks to that early strike from Jonny Hayes. It was a pretty dire stuff for the 11,149 crowd but most will go home reasonably pleased with the result.

Motherwell pile men forward but can do nothing to trouble the home defence and the Dons will see this one out comfortably.

We'll get three minutes of stoppage time. Will Motherwell summon up one attack worthy of the name or simply go down with a whimper?

That's 89 minutes now Ian. Where is our promised goal?

With time running out, Motherwell winger Lionel Ainsworth is on to replace Zaine Francis-Angol.

Anon: "If the Dons see this out get 3 points tonight I predict that they'll go on a winning streak until January. What do I base this on? Blind optimism and faith in the squad. COYR!"

Motherwell goalkeeper Dan Twardzik gets himself in a fankle, taking an extra touch from a back-pass under pressure from Adam Rooney. His panicked clearance makes it out to Cammy Smith on the left flank but the Aberdeen substitute cannot conjure up anything to punish the error.

  20. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 21:29 British Summer Time 24 October 2014

I forgot to mention Lee Erwin was on for Josh Law, as Aberdeen make their final change, replacing goalscorer Jonny Hayes with Cammy Smith.
