"That was a lovely finish from Perez. He has not done an awful lot today but that was a great goal. Every Everton player is looking at Aiden McGeady and wondering what he is doing there, he has been punished for that mistake."

The bargain of the season so far? He certainly isn't far off.

Ayoze Perez, signed for £1.5m from the Spanish second tier in the summer, has his fifth Premier League goal of the season with a classy finish.

The Newcastle striker keeps his cool as on the edge of the box, cutting inside his man and firing a low shot between the legs of Seamus Coleman and past a wrong-footed Joel Robles.

Ross Barkley injects immediate impetus into Everton's attack, picking the ball up in his own half, pinning his ears back and sprinting towards the Newcastle goal.

He slips in Arouna Kone down the left-hand channel, who stands the ball up to the back post, where Seamus Coleman can't quite make anything of it.

"Leicester worked really hard in the game and got the bit of luck they haven't had in the last few games. Hull boss Steve Bruce will be wondering what his side had to do to score because they had chance after chance."

Leaders Shrewsbury and second-placed Wycombe are struggling to be separated. The two sides drew 0-0 in their top-of-the-table clash, meaning they are still level on points with only one goal separating them on goal difference.

But neither Burton or Luton can take advantage. Burton's game at Accrington was postponed, while the Hatters were held 1-1 by Portsmouth.

At the bottom, there were two vital victories for Tranmere and York at the expense of their relegation rivals. Tranmere beat Northampton 2-1 and York cruised to a 3-0 success at Carlisle. There was more misery for bottom club Hartlepool though, as a 2-0 home defeat by Morecambe leaves them eight points adrift.

QPR manager Harry Redknapp was in a jokey mood when asked who he might want to sign in the January transfer window: "Sergio Aguero and three or four others if you'd like to get them here. It's difficult. We're where we expected to be. I'm not disappointed with the points tally. We've done well with we've had. We've got good lads here."

QPR manager Harry Redknapp, speaking to BBC Sport: "Palace are a decent team. I've seen Palace a number of times this season and I've never seen them play badly. They're a dangerous team. I think it was a fair result. I couldn't honestly say we deserved to win."

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has complained about the decision not to award his side a penalty at Southampton for a foul on Cesc Fabregas. Here is Garth Crooks' take...

"In my opinion it was a penalty so I think he has a case. I have watched a lot of Chelsea and they get a lot of calls that go their way. They have had a lot of controversy with diving recently. What goes around, comes around. They have to take it."

Crystal Palace caretaker manager Keith Millen, speaking to BBC Sport: "I've got to give the lads a load of credit for a battling performance. I thought we stood up to QPR fantastically.

"We were all shocked by what happened yesterday but I've seen the lads' resilience and I had no doubt they'd show up. We deserved at least a point.

"If we can continue like that, we'll be OK. We need to score more goals, but if we keep that organisation, we'll be OK."

Asked about his chances of getting the manager's job: "It's really down to the chairman to decide."

Things remain the same at the top of League One as leaders Bristol City and second-placed Swindon earn wins against Gillingham and Port Vale respectively.

Third-placed Preston fall further behind the pair as they can only manage a 1-1 draw at lowly Crewe. Mid-table Walsall cause the shock of the day by thumping fourth-placed MK Dons in a 3-0 away win, while there were also victories for Bradford and Fleetwood.

Newcastle v Everton average touchesImage source, Opta

    Compare and contrast.

To the left is the average touch map for Newcastle with only Fabricio Coloccini (number 2) and Mike Williamson (6) inside the Magpies' defensive half.

To the right is Everton's with only Samuel Eto'o (5) and Arouna Kone (9) getting into the attacking half.

They who dare win? It didn't work out like that in the Tyne-Wear derby for Newcastle. We shall see.
