So a former Arsenal bit-part player scores the first goal of Moyes' Real Sociedad campaign. That's got the crowd going. The word is the reason the crowd is lower than expected is because it is being shown on national television.

There are plenty of empty seats dotted around the Anoeta Stadium as kick-off approaches. It's hardly surprising considering Sociedad have won just two games all season. Here come the players. But where's Moyes?

"Tepid is perhaps the best word to describe an encounter which could have been a lot better but was by no means all bad for Real Sociedad.

"Despite having trained for little more than a week under their new manager, there was a clear game plan and a commitment to fight for a point when the going got tough in the final stages. And the biggest positive of all: it was their first clean sheet of the season.

"So there is plenty to build on, but much more will be expected by the time of Moyes's next big date: the local derby with Athletic Bilbao on Sunday, 14 December."

It's a chilly night in northern Spain. Moyes and his new assistant Billy McKinlay have been out to inspect the pitch. Sociedad's 32,000-capacity Anoeta Stadium is beginning to fill. We're less than 15 minutes from kick-off.

  10. From Preston to San Sebastianpublished at 19:28 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2014

San Sebastian, home of Real Sociedad, is a little different to Preston, where Moyes resided when he was Manchester United's and Everton's boss. For starters there's no bus station at the bottom of a huge multi-storey car park.

Instead the city in northern Spain is a surfer's paradise with enthusiasts coming from all over the world to try their hand at the notoriously tricky Basque waves.

The question is: Will Moyes give it a go on his day off?

  15. Familiar facespublished at 19:17 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2014

Any familiar faces on show tonight? Well, Arsenal fans may recall Carlos Vela, who lines up in Sociedad's forward line. The 25-year-old Mexico international was never a regular under Arsene Wenger but he did manage 11 goals over the course of six years with the Gunners.

Midfielder Esteban Granero, 27, was a £9m QPR signing but stayed just one season at Loftus Road before joining, initially on loan, Sociedad.

Elche, who are one place above Sociedad in the table, include 19-year-old midfielder Mario Pasalic who is on loan from Chelsea, on the bench. But their former Grimsby defender Charlie I'Anson does not feature as he is on loan at Alcorcon in the Segunda Division.

  18. Blame gamepublished at 19:08 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2014

Poor 'Moyesy'. He might be hundreds of miles away in the Basque Country but it seems he is still getting blamed for anything that goes wrong in Manchester. And not just at Old Trafford.

Earlier this week a 'massive mysterious bang', external was heard across Salford and Manchester that sent social media into near meltdown. One resident, DavetheRave, tweeted: "It was the sound waves from David Moyes's United career catching up with him...it went past so quick."

Surely everyone with a heart and without a United season ticket wants Moyes to succeed in Spain? Don't they?

  19. Spotlight on Moyespublished at 19:04 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2014

There are no silky skills from Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo isn't making an appearance and Luis Suarez won't be showing his teeth... Real Sociedad versus Elche is hardly La Liga box office.

But this game means everything to David Moyes as the former Manchester United and Everton boss looks to secure his first win in his second game in charge of Sociedad. The 51-year-old's first ended in a drab goalless draw away to Deportivo La Coruna and was completely overshadowed by Messi becoming La Liga's all-time leading goalscorer.

But Moyes has the spotlight all to himself tonight in what is the only top-flight game in Spain. Will the Glaswegian shine in San Sebastian?
