The pressure is relieved on Torino as they win a free-kick some 35 yards out from the Juventus goal. The ball is rolled to Fabio Quagliarella, who has a crack from distance but his effort takes a slight deflection off Carlos Tevez, enough to take the sting out of it, and reserve keeper Marco Storari makes the save.

Patrice Evra is very much in the thick of things as he launches the ball into the area and finds the head of Fernando Llorente, who heads over. Less than 10 minutes in and you sense it is going to be a long evening ahead for Torino.

Torino are firmly camped inside their own half as Juventus press. Patrice Evra muscles his way past a defender on the left and whips in a cross but Torino keeper Jean-Francois Gillet is out to make the catch.

The stands look stunning with both sets of fans waving flags with their teams colours. There is definitely an excellent derby atmosphere at the Juventus Stadium but will the action on the pitch match it? No chances as yet in a relatively cagey opening.

Off we go then. Upset on the cards?

It is absolutely chucking it down as the players walk out on to the pitch. Still, it is not dampening the spirits of the Torino fans, who are in fine voice despite their side's dismal record in these matches.

Making his first appearance in over a month today is former Manchester United fullback Patrice Evra.

The Frenchman, who has struggled with knee injuries since joining Juve in the summer, was recently described by Sir Alex Ferguson as one of the most intelligent footballers he had worked with.

"I've always been blessed with a good memory but Patrice Evra? There's a man with a brain," Ferguson told the Big Issue. "He could speak five languages and was a great help in the dressing room. Lovely guy."

Perhaps a sign of just how one sided this derby has been down the years, it was not even picked up as Serie A's Sunday feature game, with Roma versus Inter (19:45 GMT) getting the primetime television viewing slot.

Looking at the two clubs' recent form, it is perhaps understandable. Serie A leaders Juventus have won their last five games in all competitions, while Torino have failed to take victory in any of their previous five.

It's David versus Goliath stuff, but, sadly, without the sense of the underdog coming out on top.

Hello! Welcome to our latest jaunt across the continent as we take in action from Italy and Spain.

First up, to Turin, where Juventus play host to Torino before our focus swings to Spain as Barcelona travel to Valencia (20:00 GMT) looking to keep the gap between themselves and La Liga leaders Real Madrid to two points.

The prospect of the return of the working week may be looming but what better way to keep the Monday blues at bay than a bit of European football action?

More often than not, a team's derby match will be the first fixture fans look for at the start of each season.

From the banter between supporters in the build up, to the game itself - fiercely contested, goals aplenty, twists, turns and drama - there are few things more exhilarating than games between two neighbouring teams.

Spare a thought, though, for poor Torino fans because when the Turin derby looms it must make their hearts sink. Without a win against Juventus since 1995, 12 defeats out of the 16 games since then and no goal to even celebrate in the last 12 years. It is a pretty depressing fixture.

Still, there is always hope that the next meeting could be different. Will that be the case today?
