Finally, a bit of excitement. Luciano Vietto shows some neat skill to weave into a shooting chance on the edge of the box but his effort is tipped over by Enaut Zubikarai. Soon after, the young striker has another opening and this time beats the keeper but not the post, which is struck on the inside, with the ball flying back out before being hammered clear.

Carlos Vela still looks lively for Sociedad. He has won a free-kick on the right side of the box for a shove in his back as he charged to the byline. Sergio Canales whips it in and Uche heads it away at the near post. Villarreal charge straight down the other end on the counter and win a corner...

Inigo Martinez is not a happy chap. He is forced to hammer the ball out to the far side in desperate fashion, mainly because he didn;t get a shout from a team-mate to tell him a Villarreal player was on his case. Six minutes gone in this half. Neither keeper has had a touch.

Phil Bayley:, external I'm supporting Villarreal and whoever else happens to be playing Sociedad all season. I'll never forgive Moyes for breaking Utd

You've got to let it go Phil. It's nearly Christmas time and the last thing you need is three ghosts keeping you awake on the 24th

Messi scored his 21st La Liga hat-trick as Barcelona beat Espanyol 5-1

In case you missed the earlier game, I can inform you that Lionel Messi made sure that Cristiano Ronaldo didn't take all the headlines this weekend with a hat-trick of his own as Barcelona beat local rivals Espanyol 5-1. It takes Barca back into second in La Liga and two points behind Ronaldo's Real Madrid.

  10. HALF-TIMEpublished at 18:47 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2014

David Moyes' team hang on to the break. It has not been a classic encounter by any stretch of the imagination, but Moyes will be happy that his side are still level in what is his biggest test to date as a La Liga boss. Villarreal were building up a head of steam towards the end of that half so the whistle will be welcome by the away side.

  11. CLOSE!published at 18:45 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2014

Sociedad are in survival mode now. Uche sets alarm bells ringing with a pass that deflects up to Denis Cheryshev in the box, but he fluffs his volley. Then the winger drives a low ball right across the box that flies just a yard ahead of a sliding team-mate near the penalty spot.

  12. YELLOW CARDpublished at 18:43 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2014

More fury from the home fans as Luciano Vietto is booked for a challenge on Inigo Martinez, which leaves the defender on the turf. They are right to be angry as well as Vietto won the ball and Martinez made a real meal of the situation. Baaaad form, Peter.

Villarreal are turning the screw a bit now. A couple of corners in succession pose a challenge for Real Sociedad but they do well to deal with both. You can see why Sociedad have yet to concede under Moyes. They are hard-working and well-drilled at the back. Inigo Martinez has flirted with disaster a couple of times, but beyond that it has been good stuff.

  14. CLOSE!published at 18:39 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2014

The resulting free-kick beats the wall but does not dip enough to go under the crossbar. Close but no cigar from Bruno.

  15. YELLOW CARDpublished at 18:37 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2014

Controversy! Luciano Vietto is through on goal after chesting a long ball forward past Inigo Martinez. The striker reaches the edge of the box and is about to pull the trigger before he is felled by a sliding tackle from Alberto De La Bella. The hoem crowd demand red, but it is a yellow card shown. The ref must have thought Ansotegi was able to get over and so De La Bella wasn't the last man.

  16. Postpublished at 18:33 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2014

Chaos in the Sociedad box as Jonathan dos Santos looks to nip the ball past a couple of challenges and into a shooting chance in the box. The ball deflects to Luciano Vietto but he is unable to get his shot on target. The stalemate continues.

Carlos Vela is the outlet for Real Sociedad. He uses his pace on the left to break into Villarreal territory before swinging over a superb cross, which almost reaches David Zurutuza in the middle. It ends up swinging a yard ahead of the Sociedad striker.

Carlos Vela wins his side a corner after a terrible back-pass from Denis Cheryshev. Unfortunately for Sociedad, the resulting set-piece is swung straight into the grateful arms of Sergio Asenjo in the home goal.

Denis Cheryshev shows a superb touch to bring the ball down after it plummets in his direction from the sky. It gives him half a chance to get a shot on goal from inside the box but fails to generate enough power to beat Enaut Zubikarai.
