  1. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 16:12 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2014

"Penalty!" scream the home fans. Not a chance. Veteran Barca star Xavi bursts (yes, bursts) into the penalty area, but goes tumbling over the body of Espanyol defender Alvaro Gonzalez. However, he simply innocuously slipped on the Nou Camp turf. No foul. No penalty.

Hang on! This wasn't in the script - Espanyol almost bag the opener. Barca are scrambling as a low cross comes in from the left, but the home defence manage to clear before Felipe Caicedo (remember him Manchester City fans?) sticks an outstretched foot there first.

Still no respite for the away team. Ivan Rakitic swings in a delicious ball from the right corner of the penalty box, towards the far post where Luis Suarez is lurking with intent. But Espanyol defender Alvaro Gonzalez is well-placed to head clear

Barcelona playmaker Xavi, making his 30th derby appearance, sticks on the passing radar to slice open the Espanyol defence with a 30-yard pass through the middle. It finds the feet of Luis Suarez, like a sat-nav reliant car finding its well-hidden destination, but the Uruguayan is crowded out by a couple of blue and white shirts.

Here's what is going to happen for much of the next 90 minutes or so. Barcelona have the ball and attack. Espanyol don't have the ball and defend for their lives.

That pattern begins inside the opening two minutes, only for the hosts to hand back possession when Luis Suarez strays offside on the left flank as he is picked out by Neymar.

  7. KICK-OFFpublished at 16:01 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2014

Luis Suarez taps the ball to partner-in-crime Lionel Messi - and that means the 161st derby is under way. Game on!

  8. Barca aiming to close gap on Realpublished at 16:00 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2014

If Barcelona nab the three points that many expect them to, then Luis Enrique's men will move within two points of La Liga leaders Real Madrid.

In case you didn't already know, Cristiano Ronaldo stole the show AGAIN as player and club smashed more records on another historic night at the Bernabeu.

I'm sure they'll be a record out there that Lionel Messi can rack up today...

  9. Goal-shy Espanyolpublished at 15:56 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2014

What could you do in 455 minutes? Watch the entire Godfather trilogy. Fly to New York City from the UK. Or not concede a goal against your local neighbours.

Espanyol have not scored in their last five league meetings with Barcelona - but they have never before gone six games without a goal.

It has been 455 minutes since Alvaro Vazquez scored the last derby goal for Espanyol on 8 January, 2012.

Inspired by Espanyol's position as long-suffering neighbours to Barcelona, we want to know which other team you feel have spent more time in the shadows than any other. And, equally importantly, why?

Manchester City could certainly have laid claim to that unenviable crown before their recent resurgence on the back of Shiekh Mansour's millions. How about Roman side Lazio? Or 1860 Munich?

  13. Postpublished at 15:49 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2014

Buenos dias amigos! And welcome to our live coverage of Barcelona v Espanyol - or the 'Derbi Barcelona' as it is otherwise known.

Barcelona are 22-time Spanish champions and four-time European kings. Oh, and throw in two world titles and shed loads more silverware. Espanyol have four Copa Del Reys to their credit...and not much else.

Spain's second largest city - the capital of Catalonia - is buzzing with excitement. Or should I say the bars populated with home fans will be buzzing.

A sense of trepidation might be lingering in the air of Espanyol-coloured bars. And here's why....

    Harry Enfield

The chances of many Espanyol supporters being au fait with UK comedy Harry Enfield and Chums are probably slim to none.

But any who have happened to stumble across the classic 1990s sketch show might feel sympathy with the downtrodden couple who are constantly told by their posh Brummie neighbours that "we're considerably richer than yowww".

Stan and Pam Herbert boast about their expensive motors, flashy clothes and glitzy jewellery. Espanyol's neighbours Barcelona boast about a bursting trophy cabinet, lucrative sponsorships deals and signing the world's greatest players.

"Estem considerablement mes ric que tu" (the Catalan translation of the Herberts' famous catchphrase) may or may not be heard at the Nou Camp today...
