Spanish football expert Sam Marsden at Anoeta: "Real Sociedad scored one for themselves and limited Barcelona's chances in that first half, but there's still a long way to go for David Moyes to secure a win which would surely rank highly in his career achievements.

"They've tired badly in the last half hour of all five of his league games in charge and that dip tonight is likely to coincide with the introduction of Lionel Messi and Neymar - Luis Suarez hasn't yet managed to make up for their absences.

"There are other problems for Barca, though. Martin Montoya is not the same outlet that Dani Alves is on the right and they're struggling to build from the back without Gerard Pique, who was possibly left on the bench to avoid picking up the booking which would rule him out of next weekend's clash with Atletico Madrid."

La Liga champions Atletico Madrid will be enjoying themselves this weekend. A win for them, a defeat for Real and now Barcelona behind at half time. More than they could have dreamed of surely?

Spanish football expert Sam Marsden at Anoeta: "Nothing wakes up Spanish football fans like a bad refereeing decision. Vela, powering through the middle, looked to be chopped down by Mascherano, but the official felt it was a dive and handed the Mexican a yellow card instead. Anoeta was incensed and the whistles were deafening.

"Then another decision went against them and the noise rose a few more decibels. Moyes even joined in, stepping out of his technical area to berate the linesman.

"As for chances, La Real have come into the game on the counter and only a save from their former goalkeeper, Claudio Bravo, prevented Sergio Canales doubling the home side's lead after want-away Barca right-back Martin Montoya had been turned inside out."

  4. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:45 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2015

Time for Lionel Messi and Neymar? You wouldn't be surprised.

Pedro tries his luck from 30 yards. His low shot can only be parried out by goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli but Sociedad's defence react quickly and clear the danger.

  6. Postpublished at 20:42 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2015

Bad news for Sociedad as Lionel Messi begins to warm up. Surely won't be long before we see him if things continue as they are?

  7. YELLOW CARDpublished at 20:40 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2015

Carlos Vela's copybook is blotted as he throws himself to the ground under the challenge of Javier. A caution for diving.

Brilliant from the hosts as they almost double their lead. Sergio Canales is played through down the right by Carlos Velas and, after turning Martín Montoya inside the penalty area, his shot is turned wide by Claudio Bravo. A good spell from David Moyes's men.

  10. YELLOW CARDpublished at 20:35 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2015

A cycnical challenge from Jeremy Mathieu as Sociedad's Carlos Vela breaks down the right with his side looking threatening. A good yellow card for the Frenchman.

  12. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 20:32 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2015

Penalty shout for Barcelona as Pedro's cross from the left hits Inigo Martínez in the arm. The cross was deflected into him and that must go in his favour as the referee waves play on. Fortunate for Real Sociedad.

Spanish football expert Sam Marsden at Anoeta: "Real Sociedad have just eased off and allowed Barcelona to take control of the ball, although they've not managed to create any real chances on Rulli's goal yet.

"Moyes has been out on the touchline demanding more from his players and he may feel the fans could make it a bit more intimidating. The running track around the pitch at Anoeta certainly isn't conducive to a good atmosphere - there are plans in place to remove it - but you only have to look at Valencia's fans earlier today to see how much of a difference a bit of noise can make."

Barcelona keep coming as Martín Montoya advances down the right. His low cross is flicked goalwards by Munir but blocked for a corner.

This could prove to be a long half for Sociedad. After taking a shock lead, they are sitting very deep and are struggling to get out of their own half. Surely only a matter of time before the visitors are level, as Pedro blazes over the bar following a good run from Luis Suarez.
