"Much more entertaining... a few really decent chances here, and Senegal's attacking line-up has looked quick, creative and dangerous. But so far South Africa's defence has held firm and they have created more than enough opportunities themselves. A couple of awesome runs by Sibusiso Vilakazi and Thuso Phala mean Bafana Bafana are right in this game. It still looks like goals - but we haven't had one yet!"

The referee blows to end the first half. South Africa have had the better of it, but they haven't made their superiority count.

That's the best chance of the match, and against the run of play it goes to Senegal. From the corner quadrant, Papakouli Diop's flighted delivery finds Stoke's Mame Diouf all alone at the far post six yards out, but the striker takes his eye off it and plants his header well wide. Should have scored. Two minutes added.

Thabo Matlaba isn't so coy when he gets in a bit of space on the left edge of the penalty area. The South Africa man tries to give Bouna Coundoul the eyes, shaping for the far post and aiming for the near, but his effort curls wide of the post.

Ooh, that's a great opening wasted for South Africa. Tokelo Rantie makes a great run into the area, draws players towards him and slips a square pass to Andile Jali in space, but Jali inexplicably elects to turn the ball back across goal and Senegal clear. Shoot!

A bit of a lull in this game. South Africa, despite the changes to their back line, have been the better side so far - and they look solidly set up in defence. No way through for Senegal's vaunted forward line so far.

South Africa win a free-kick out on the left, which is touched short to Oupa Manyisa, who sends a rising effort over the bar.

That means a completely rejigged centre-back pairing for South Africa, with Ayanda Gcaba joining Erick Mathotho, who himself replaced Rivaldo Coetzee from South Africa's opening match. Another high challenge sees Andile Jali rolling around in agony, but still the referee keeps his cards in his pocket.

"So for the second game in a row, South Africa have lost a defender early in the game. This time it's Thulani Hlatshwayo - the unfortunate scorer of that own goal in their first game against Algeria. But he had a fine match apart from that, and he'll be missed."

  11. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 19:29 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2015

Sadio Mane has be industrious for Senegal so far, and it looks like South Africa are doubling up on him. Thulani Hlatshwayo is indeed going to be unable to continue - Ayanda Gcaba is on in his place.

"The bass drum guy has departed. He must have been Ghanaian. But the packed stand opposite me, which is where most of the Senegalese fans are, is jumping to a quicker rhythm. Their boys are keeping the South African defence busy at the moment..."

  13. Postpublished at 19:26 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2015

South Africa defender Thulani Hlatshwayo had a clash of heads earlier and he appears to be feeling it now. He's signalling to the bench that he's got double vision. The stretcher is out, and it looks like he could be done here.

Senegal have another free-kick 20 yards out, but this time Papakouli Diop swings it straight into Jackson Mabokgwane's breadbasket.

"There's already more interest in this game than we had in more than an hour of Ghana v Algeria."

  16. Postpublished at 19:23 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2015

South Africa have been in the ascendancy so far, but Senegal pose a lingering threat from set pieces. This time Papakouli Diop's free-kick causes all sorts of problems for new keeper Jackson Mabokgwane, who flaps at it for a corner. The keeper does better the second time around, getting a good firm punch on the corner.

JavelBleach: Enjoying South Africa's pass and move, but wonder if they have the means to capitalise. Senegal's direct approach may be more efficient.

Thuso Phala drives inside from the right wing, plays a neat give-and-go with Tokelo Rantie and takes a shot which Senegal's Ludovic Sane does superbly to throw himself in the way of. The defender punches the air in delight.

Rian Hoskins: Shows Senegal's squad depth that Cheikhou Kouyate and Papiss Cisse, who have played well in the Premier League this season, are on the bench.

Thabo Matlaba is lucky not to pick up a yellow here. Mame Diouf gets tight to him and spins in behind, and the South Africa man blocks him off. And moments later, Sibusiso Vilakazi is guilty of another bad challenge, going in high on Papakouli Diop. The Mauritian referee is taking a lenient approach so far.
