So that result means Ghana leapfrog Algeria in the Group C table. The Fennecs may need to better Ghana's result against South Africa in their final group game against Senegal.
Senegal are arguably the major beneficiaries of that result and can take a tight grip on this group if they beat South Africa later. They can't qualify for certain today though.
Ghana substitute David Accam on Twitter: , externalGet in theerreeeee!! First three points. Thanks for your support.
Ghana probably just about deserved to nick that one, particularly on the strength of their second-half performance. They marginally shaded position and creating more shooting opportunities.
Algeria, so highly rated and hotly tipped in many quarters, were desperately disappointing. No shots on target tells the story of their lacklustre display.
Vera Kwakofi: What does it say about the rest of the Ghana team that our first three points came from the man sick with malaria?
You have to hand it to Asamoah Gyan. He has only just recovered from a bout of malaria, and in truth he looked well off the pace for most of that match, but he left Carl Medjani treading in treacle for the winner. He's scored in each of his last six games for Ghana - enough to silence the calls for his retirement (see 88 mins)?
What drama. Ghana are back in the mix. It wasn't a classic, but that dramatic late winner could yet prove to be crucial for Ghana - and Algeria.
BBC Sport's Matthew Kenyon in Mongomo
"What a moment for Asamoah Gyan. They need this win and surely they're going to get it now! The captain has come back and won it for the Black Stars!"
This game has a late twist! Ghana were undone by a late goal in their last match, but this time they benefit from one. A long ball is lumped forward from the back by Wakaso Mubarak, Asamoah Gyan shows strength to get away from a lumbering Carl Medjani, and he pokes a good finish past Rais M'Bohli. The Black Stars are alive in this tournament, and this group is wide open.
Patrick Awards: It's frustrating to see our Ghana squad in recent time. It's heartbreaking that we cannot find the back of the net.
Rare guy: This has to be the most boring Afcon since Mali 2002. Too many drawn games so far. Very little drama.
Wait for it...
Algeria may be the highest-ranked team at this tournament but they don't look a happy team at the moment. They've been outplayed by Ghana in this second half, but it's the Fennecs who will be happier with a draw, having won their first game. Three added minutes to endure.
Antonio Albertez: Asamoah Gyan should retire after this tournament. He has played diabolical football today.
This is even more reactionary than most England fans after a poor World Cup.
A momentary glimmer of excitement for Algeria as Riyad Mahrez's clever reverse pass releases Sofiane Feghouli into a shooting position, but the midfielder elects to dink a hopeful cross across goal instead. No-one on the end of it.
Bubacarr Danso: Very poor game, no quality whatsoever.
Yep...
The delivery from the free kick is decent from Wakaso Mubarak, but Algeria skipper Madjid Bougherra, who has as good a claim as anyone to the Man of the Match award today, gets a good defensive header in.
Aminu Hamidu: Mahatma Otoo must be starting, the only natural striker we have at the moment
Kwame Gyan: This has got to be the most average Black Stars team in 30 years.
Yacine Brahimi, who has been really disappointing today, gives away a free-kick and is promptly hooked by Christian Gourcuff. Algeria bring on Foued Kadir of Real Betis in his place.
Avram Grant never looks entirely chuffed to bits on the sidelines and the Ghana coach hasn't been given much to smile about today. He makes his final change, bringing on striker Solomon Asante in place of Andre Ayew.
Geoffrey Taghili: Riyad Mahrez can be the greatest Algerian player ever, but he first must learn to find an end product.
Ghana win a free-kick in a fairly central position 25 yards. Asamoah Gyan, only recently off his sickbed, steps up. Is the hour of destiny upon us? Er, no. He skies a horrendous effort miles over the bar. Woeful.
