Chance out of nothing for Newcastle as Massadio Haidatra's cross from the left finds Ayoze Perez in the penalty area but his glanced header is straight at goalkeeper Allan McGregor. The visitors' first attempt on target.

It is fair to say Hull striker Nikica Jelavic has struggled to get into this game so far. As his touch map shows above, he has had 10 touches, none of which have been inside Newcastle's area. He needs better service.

"The teams are looking a little bit cagey, there are one or two nerves out there. The play in the middle of the pitch has not been too bad, but Newcastle and Hull are both lacking a little bit of belief and confidence when they reach the final third."

All very bitty so far with fouls all over the place and few moments of quality. Hull fans have had more to be cheery about but, bar Curtis Davies's header, they have done little to trouble Newcastle's goal.

This will get better - it has to doesn't it?

David Ljunggren: No quality, no confidence, no class, no creativity - Newcastle are slowly sinking here. We'll be lucky to stay up this season.

Aidan Mifsud: You look at some of the players in the Hull team and think that's a pretty decent team. So you think, hmm, the manager...

My, there's a lot of positivity swirling around this lunchtime...

The cautions are evened up as Newcastle's Vurnon Anita is shown yellow for a standard foul on Abel Hernandez.

Mike Phelan will be confirmed as Hull's assistant manager after this match and is currently watching his new employers in action.

The former Manchester United and Norwich head coach is unable to take up the post before 1 February because of the terms of his recent departure from City.

Middlesbrough skipper Grant Leadbitter has maintained his perfect penalty record this season to give his side a 1-0 lead against the run of play at Brentford. On-loan Chelsea midfielder Patrick Bamford was brought down by goalkeeper David Button for a clear foul just before the break.

In the Yorkshire derby, Huddersfield Town, have hit back to make it 1-1 at home to Leeds United. The Terriers lost top scorer Nahki Wells to injury early on but his replacement Harry Bunn has headed in an equaliser from a corner.

  9. YELLOW CARDpublished at 13:11 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2015

David Meyler lunges into a challenge on Remy Cabella, leaving the Newcastle man writhing in agony on the ground. Referee Phil Dowd shows the yellow card but that could easily have been red. A quite horrible tackle.

Hull look pretty decent in the middle third but their big problem remains in sticking the ball in the net. Ten goals in 10 home matches is not good enough. Maybe the probable imminent arrival of Dame N'Doye from Lokomotiv Moscow will be the answer?

Michael Blighe: Re Edward Taylor (10 mins). Good start? Newcastle didn't get our first win of the season until October! Been bottom once, didn't like it much.

"This team needs to win games. I have to turn it around," then-boss Alan Pardew told the media at the end of September - the Toon had not won a top-flight game all season by that point...

"What a fantastic ball and the initial header is from Curtis Davies. Tim Krul and Fabricio Coloccini combine to save, and then a whole host of Hull players come running in - you think they are going to smash it in but Newcastle clear. Worrying for the away side and desperately unlucky for Hull."

  13. CLOSE!published at 13:06 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2015

How does that not got in? Brilliant from Ahmed Elmohamady as he skins Sammy Ameobi before standing a delicious cross up from the right. Curtis Davies rises well to head downwards but defender Fabricio Coloccini brilliantly blocks the ball on the line, before the visitors hack clear.

    So close.

Newcastle boss John Carver is looking a little pensive as he leans against the dug out and it is no surprise. His side have struggled to get into the game at all.

"It's very blustery here and you might think Hull would be a bit nervous but they have started quite brightly. Newcastle look quite happy just to sit back and defend and play on the counter attack."

Yorky Bob: Amazed to see Hull's ground so empty for such a big game!

Gavin Richmond: We pass it around the back like Barca then give it to Williamson... hoof!

Edward Taylor: There always seems to be a team that starts the season well before plummeting ending up in a relegation battle. My tip is Newcastle.

It is all Hull early on as they look confident in possession and positive in their outlook. Gaston Ramirez plays a cheeky backheel to David Meyler on the edge of the penalty area, but his pass is wayward.

Newcastle need to get a grip of this.

"That has to go down as a really good opportunity missed by Michael Dawson. It was just floated into the danger area in between the goalkeeper and defence, Dawson was unmarked, and when he sees that again he will be really disappointed not to have hit the target."

  19. Postpublished at 12:53 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2015

Michael Dawson throws himself at an inswinging Hull free-kick inside the penalty area. He gets the touch but glances the ball just wide.
