"Only Brown Ideye will know how he missed that. All he has got to do is put his knee over the ball and it is a tap in. That's an easy chance for a player who has been in great form.

"This a good start from the away team here."

  2. CLOSE!published at 17:40 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

Chance! West Brom should lead as they carve a very open Aston Villa apart. One ball down the side is all it takes to spring Craig Gardner, he does everything right, gets his head up and flashes it across first time. Brown Ideye gets there first, eight yards out, and he blasts it into the Holte End.

If he hits the target, it's 1-0.

"It's widely known that Saido Berahino and Brown Ideye are playing with injections. If you are a Villa supporter what you want to do is to leave a little bit there in a challenge - but you don't want to see a bad tackle - to let them know you know that they are playing with a little bit of pain. But there is no way either of those players will want to come off this afternoon."

  4. GREAT SAVE!published at 17:37 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2015

Tim Sherwood has his pros, he has his cons, but he certainly has Aston Villa playing at a higher tempo. It may be the fact that I'm a footballing philistine, but I found Paul Lambert's possession football incredibly dull to watch. Sherwood's Villa are much more up-and-at-'em.

But it's Albion with the first shot on goal, Saido Berahino cracking a drive from the edge of the box which Shay Given has to beat clear.

You won't see two more animated managers on the sidelines than Tony Pulis and Tim Sherwood. They are already up and about, shouting out instructions. West Brom were expected to play three at the back today but Joleon Lescott has started at left-back of a back four. A flexible approach?

"This is one of the best atmospheres I have heard at Villa Park for a long, long time. Tim Sherwood will definitely have got his players up for this. Can they repeat what they did in midweek?"

"Thunderous atmosphere inside Villa Park - certainly a few notches up from the Premier League game on Tuesday night. The FA Cup and the prospect of Wembley does that to a game."

"Gabriel Agbonlahor will be key again tonight. He caused them all sorts of problems on Tuesday with his pace and I was surprised by the high line they played against him because of that pace. I think West Brom would have worked all week on sitting a bit deeper and not giving him that space."

More from Tim Sherwood speaking to Pat Murphy: "There's plenty of worse jobs out there at the moment than managing Aston Villa. You learn through adversity and there's certainly lots of adversity here at the moment.

"I don't think we're typically cut out for a relegation battle. I think we're far more equipped for a tilt at the Europa League, but maybe a 94th-minute penalty against West Brom is the kind of thing we need to change that approach and mentality."

    "We're not considering relegation."

A marvellous watch this: Local poet Benjamin Zephaniah delivers his ode to the West Midlands derby in Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final between Aston Villa and West Brom.

The Handsworth-born writer explains the ties that made him an Aston Villa fan instead of supporting their local rivals.

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Villa Park

"The second west Midlands derby of the week here at Villa Park as Aston Villa meet West Bromwich Albion - but two of the main protagonists of the home side's vital Premier League win on Tuesday will not be involved.

"Villa's match-winner Christian Benteke is out with a hip injury while Boaz Myhill returns for FA Cup duty in place of Ben Foster in goal. Foster's name was greeted with ironic cheers from the Holte End when it was read out after he capped a dreadful performance by conceding a penalty with seconds left, allowing Benteke to score.

"A place at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-final is at stake today, so a game already high in tension will have an added edge."
