  1. Post update

That is a wrap from us for the night - see you soon!

  2. 'Late goals not by accident'

    Republic of Ireland 1-1 Poland

    Martin O'Neill

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill: "I'm absolutely delighted with them. Our second-half performances was outstanding. We were tentative in the first half and gave away a silly goal.

"But after that we were terrific. We deserved it and we might have on it.

"The most important thing to say at half-time was that we were still in the game and we had to keep belief. The players will always give it everything. We've scored lots of late goals but that shows the character in that team. That word is overused but it is not an accident. They may lack some things but they don't lack character.

"If we show that drive and determination there is no reason why we can't go on winning."

  3. Who's on their way to France?

The top two of each group will book an automatic place in next summer's finals. So who is the driving seat as it stands?

Group A: Czech Republic & Iceland

    Group B: Wales & Israel

    Group C: Slovakia & Spain

    Group D: Poland & Germany

    Group E: England & Slovenia

Group F: Romania & Northern Ireland

    Group G: Austria & Sweden

    Group I: Portugal & Denmark

Frank Davies: Get rid of Keane and start picking Long. Keane a yard too slow and well past his sell by date.

  5. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 1-1 Poland

Lukasz Fabianski has a point. He punched the ball out for a corner right at the end but he was under heavy pressure. You'd expect to see a foul given nine times out of 10.

  6. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 1-1 Poland

Poland goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski: "They put more pressure on us in the second half. We were trying to defend and catch them on the break, we had a lot of crosses to deal with and defend well. I thought we were unlucky.

"I think we deserved to win but they will say they deserve a point. We did well for almost 90 minutes but a lack of concentration right at the end has cost us. They got the corner for the goal but there should be a free-kick for a foul on me."

  7. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 1-1 Poland

Martin O'Neill's side took 63 minutes to have their first attempt on target in the match. After that it was all hands on deck.

  8. Player reaction

    Republic of Ireland 1-1 Poland

    Shane Long

Republic of Ireland goalscorer Shane Long: "For the first 45 minutes Poland were brilliant but we changed the shape and we were right in the game then. Scoring against England was a great feeling for me personally but that is up there. It will be between us and Scotland for that second place and we can't drop any more points.

"Losing is massive and it keeps them within touching distance. We need to win our home games and make it a fortress. It was an electric atmosphere from both sets of fans, and it helped us to get back into the game."

  9. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 1-1 Poland

That's three late goals for Ireland in their five qualifiers. Mental strength, 'the luck of the Irish', call it what you like. They've been vital.

  10. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 1-1 Poland

Daily Star journalist Chris McKenna: Imagine that. Bring on a Premier League striker and he scores a goal.

  11. Tight at the top

    Republic of Ireland 1-1 Poland

    Group D

That late, late goal means that Republic of Ireland are just three points off the top of Group D. Poland stay unbeaten and stay on top, but only a point clear of Germany and Scotland. All to play for. Gibraltar may have to settle for a place in the play-offs.

  12. Post update

    Elsewhere in Europe

Hungary could not find a way to break down Greece in Group F - and that's good news for Northern Ireland, who are four points above them in second place.

Portugal moved to the top of Group I with a 2-1 victory over Serbia with goals from Ricardo Carvalho and Fabio Coentrao coming either side of Nemanja Matic's stunning equaliser.

  13. FULL-TIME

    Republic of Ireland 1-1 Poland

    Shane Long celebrates

There it is. Shane Long gets the plaudits from from John O'Shea and it's a point apiece.

  14. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 1-1 Poland

Germany will be pleased with that goal too.

    Ireland get a corner...

  15. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 1-1 Poland

At times in the first half it looked like Poland would win this comfortably but after the break the hosts have been much improved. Robert Lewandowski has been kept quiet but now shoots over from 25 yards. Is that the last effort of the night?

  16. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 1-1 Poland

There are five minutes added on as well. Still time for a winner for somebody. Poland win a corner...

  17. GOAL

Republic of Ireland 1-1 Poland - Shane Long

    Shane Long goal

They have done it! Ireland equalise in stoppage time. The corner is whipped in, Wes Hoolahan heads it back down and substitute Shane Long is there to stab it over the line via a deflection.

You have to say they deserve that.

  18. Post update

Robbie Brady's delivery is better - Lukasz Fabianski makes a hash of it and it's a corner...

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

James McClean has made a real difference since coming on but his latest delivery is horrible, straight out of play.

Ireland have less than five minutes to find an equaliser. Poland looking good for a place in France next summer.

  24. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

    Robbie Savage

    BBC Sport

"Great tackle by James McClean. Thankfully Milik got up and carried on! Wow - didn't know your foot could get in that position."

  25. YELLOW CARD

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

    Republic

James McCarthy slaps Polish sub Sebastian Mila off the ball - that should be a red card but the referee books both men. He got away with one there.

  26. SUBSTITUTION

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

Shane Long is now on, for Glenn Whelan. Is it too late?

  27. CLOSE!

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

That was the chance! James McClean with another fine ball in, it hits the heels of Robbie Keane and he then leaves it for Seamus Coleman, arriving like a train, Coleman blazes it wide though! Hit it hard as you like, but it was wild.

  28. Post update

A leg breaker, or a rallying cry? That challenge from James McClean certainly divides opinion. He almost divided Arkadiusz Milik.

Robbie Keane wriggles down the left and cuts it back, but Wes Hoolahan's effort is blocked. Still no further changes for Ireland. Get some forwards on!

Shay McEvoy: Got to admire McClean's commitment - hopefully that'll inspire the rest of the players.

  32. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

Fifteen minutes to go. Ireland arguably deserve an equaliser for their dominance in the second half but can they force one home?

  33. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

That was very close for Robbie Keane and for Ireland. Poland have been a shadow of their former selves in this half, but how much of that is down to Ireland?

James McClean then crunches Arkadiusz Milik in the middle. Good grief. John McClane would be pleased with that.

  34. HITS THE WOODWORK

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

James McClean's introduction almost conjures a goal! He beats his man and puts in a magic cross, Robbie Keane gets the header in and a combination of Lukasz Fabianski and the post keep it out!

  36. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

    McGeady

Sunday World journalist Kevin Palmer: Is McGeady meant to be a winger, a midfielder or what? Looks like he's doing an audition for Riverdance every time he gets a pass.

  37. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

    cOLEMAN

It's a gutsy second-half showing from Ireland but have they got the quality to make it count? Seamus Coleman does well again to beat his man and find Jon Walters but he can only steer a header on goal. Tame.

Daryl Murphy remains on the bench. Scoring goals for fun for Ipswich.

  38. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

Panic stations in the Polish defence almost leads to the ball falling for Robbie Keane before Wes Hoolahan slams a shot well wide. Here is a change, and it's out wide. Aiden McGeady hauled off, James McClean on.

Mark: Brady has been shocking this evening!

James Marshall: Rep of Ireland dying in the group of death. Goal required to bring them back to life.

  40. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

A better ball in this time from Robbie Brady and Marc Wilson climbs high - his header is firm but easy for Lukasz Fabianski to hold on to. That's a shot on target though. Ireland on top.

  41. Post update

    Elsewhere in Europe

    Matic celebrates

The match in Portugal has sparked into life, with two goals in quick succession. Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic equalised for Serbia with a superb bicycle kick but the visitors weres level for just two minutes before Fabio Coentrao made it 2-1.

  42. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

Kamil Glik is down receiving treatment for Poland after an awkward landing, but he is able to continue. A hard man. Robbie Brady shoots and wins a corner via a block. Ireland dialling up the pressure.

  43. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

Robbie Brady takes, Robbie Brady fires over. His dead-ball delivery has been poor tonight.

  44. YELLOW CARD

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

    Walters is fouled

Ireland really do want Ian Harte out there now as they win a free-kick in the perfect range for the old left-back. Lukasz Szukala is booked for hauling down Jon Walters.

Free-kick, 25 yards out, bang central...

  45. Post update

  49. HITS THE WOODWORK

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

    Robbie Brady

Ireland haven't tested Poland yet but they are almost given a route back into the game! Robbie Brady puts a good cross in this time, it flicks off the head of Poland defender Pawel Olkowski and loops over the head of Lukasz Fabianski - only to hit the far post!

Unlucky. Or lucky, depending on your point of view...

  50. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

    Conor McNamara

"Poland have totally fallen for Ireland's rope-a-dope tactics...The football equivalent of lying on the floor and playing dead."

  51. Post update

Robbie Brady to take - and again it's poor. Get Ian Harte on.

  52. YELLOW CARD

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

    Robbie Keane is fouled

Robbie Keane crumples into a heap after a strong challenge from Kamil Glik, the referee waves play on but the linesman's flag goes up and Glik is eventually booked.

Free-kick in a good area. Needs a good delivery...

Fergus Puskas: Is that John O'Shea or Paddy McGuinness playing at the back for Ireland?

I think John O'Shea's been involved in enough mistaken identity cases for one season, Fergus.

    Paddy McGuiness
  57. KICK-OFF

Ricardo Carvalho scores, Valentino Rossi wins a race - is it 2005?

  64. Post update

    Elsewhere in Europe

    Ricardo Carvalho

It's hardly raining goals. Ricardo Carvalho's header separates Portugal and Serbia in Group I, while Hungary and Greece are locked at 0-0 in Group F - Northern Ireland's Group. Meanwhile, a goal from Alexandre Lacazette has given France the lead over Denmark in a friendly.

  65. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

Defeat tonight would not be terminal for Ireland's chances of qualification but it will be all uphill driving from here on in.

They will have to make changes - surely? - as they have not troubled Swansea goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski once so far.

  66. HALF-TIME

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

A few jeers - but plenty of cheers from the massive Polish support - as the half-time whistle goes.

  67. YELLOW CARD

    Yep. Here he is.

    Roy Keane
  69. CLOSE!

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

That's brilliant feet from Aiden McGeady! He leaves two Polish defenders on their backsides with a fine turn and then chips one just past the far post!

Not sure if it was a shot or a cross but it nearly went in.

  70. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

Ipswich Town's Irish striker Noel Hunt: Do we want to sell any more tickets to Polish fans by the way? Schoolboy stuff from the FAI! It's like an away game! More red than green!

  71. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

Maciej Rybus flicks a header wide after strong play down the Polish left. A second goal for the visitors would be the end of this game as a contest you'd think.

  72. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

    Robbie Brady

Better from Robbie Brady as he skips away from a challenge to gain 40 yards, but he can't get a clean cross into the middle. Ireland haven't had an effort on target yet but they have recovered their composure since falling behind. Seamus Coleman is an outlet on the right.

  73. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

Seamus Coleman does really well to win a free-kick from a lost cause on the right, and Robbie Brady wastes it, overclubbing one straight out of play. The Hull man has not had a great first half.

  75. YELLOW CARD

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

    Rybus shoots from free kick

Poland break away and Glenn Whelan has to take one for the team and bring down Arkadiusz Milik from behind. It's actually John O'Shea who is booked for an earlier foul on Robert Lewandowski. Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland

I don't know how many fans Poland officially have in Dublin tonight - but unofficially they've got loads. It sounds and looks like a home game as the flares go off and the chants reverberate around the Aviva Stadium. All to do for the Republic now.

  79. GOAL

Republic of Ireland 0-1 Poland - Slawomir Peszko

    Poland score opening goal

What a finish! But it's awful defending from Republic of Ireland as Marc Wilson and Robbie Brady make a mess of clearing the ball in the left-back position. Former Wolves winger Slawomir Peszko picks the ball up, cuts inside and thunders a left-footed belter past Shay Given. Wonderfully struck.

  80. YELLOW CARD

    Republic of Ireland 0-0 Poland

    Wes Hoolahan booked

Wes Hoolahan was warned a few minutes ago for a late tackle and he's in the book now for a reckless one, chopping down Lukasz Szukala in midfield.

  81. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 0-0 Poland

Midway through the first half and you'd give it to Poland on points so far. They look a really strong, well organised side. Ireland have at least snuffed out the threat of Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski so far.

  82. CLOSE!

    Republic of Ireland 0-0 Poland

Poland win a free-kick deep in the Ireland half. All sorts of grappling and holding in the penalty area but the delivery is excellent, Grzegorz Krychowiak beats his man to the ball but heads over.

    A presentable chance.

Agnes Saul: Based only on the early exchanges, granted, but it looks like Poland could be strolling to an easy victory in Dublin tonight.

Aidan Fortune: If ROI beat Poland, where would that leave them in the table given they've lost to Scotland but drew with Germany?

A win for Martin O'Neill's side would leave four teams level on 10 points - Poland, Germany, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland. So the results between those four teams would then be treated as a mini-league to separate them.

  85. Post update

    Elsewhere in Europe

    Portugal

It's taken just 10 minutes for Portugal to break the deadlock against Serbia. Former Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho shows he's still got it - the 36-year-old heads the home side in front from six yards.

  86. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 0-0 Poland

Republic of Ireland may have weathered the Polish storm. They hardly saw the ball for the first 10 minutes but they are growing into the game now. Good movement down the right sees James McCarthy burst into the box, but he can't pull it back to Robbie Keane.

  87. CLOSE!

    Republic of Ireland 0-0 Poland

Ireland's first effort. They take a quick free-kick, Poland are caught sleeping and Wes Hoolahan scuffs a shot wide from the edge of the area. A decent chance that, he never got hold of the shot.

  90. Post update

    Republic of Ireland 0-0 Poland

Poland controlling all of the early play, Robbie Keane yet to have a touch and Jon Walters playing almost as a second right-back for the Republic. He will work hard all night out there. He's wearing a 'phantom of the opera'-style mask after he fractured a cheekbone playing for Stoke.

Steve Holligan: Why are Scotland below Germany in the group ranking, when we have a better goalscoring record?

Teams level on points in Euro 2016 qualifying are separated first by head-to-head record.

With Poland, Germany and Scotland all on 10 points (as things stand), their results against each other are treated as a mini-league to separate them. Poland enjoyed a 2-0 win in October over Germany, who themselves beat Scotland 2-1 in September. That means Poland are top, Germany second and Scotland third.

Yes, yes - it's all about as clear as the interpretation of the offside rule at Windsor Park earlier.

  99. Post update

Just 15 minutes to go until kick-off in Dublin. Can Republic of Ireland move level on points with Scotland, Germany and Poland? Or will the Poles flex their muscles and show why they are top of the tree?

  100. Post update

You're not the only one who will be checking that offside rule Michael. We're all a bit confused...

  101. 'I'll have to check the rule'

    Northern Ireland 2-1 Finland

Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill, speaking to Sky Sports: "We knew how Finland would play, we knew we would have to work hard off the ball, but we created by far and away the best chances in the game and we deserved the win.

"We had a goal disallowed, and I can't understand why it was disallowed. I believe they've given offside against Chris Brunt from the short corner. I'll have to check the rule. There's not a lot of room here to take short corners, and that was why we moved the ball. But the players deserve credit for not letting it get to them."

    Northern Ireland 2-1 Finland

Finland manager Mixu Paatelainen, speaking to Sky Sports: "We were soft in our defending. Northern Ireland's players showed how powerful and good they are and they punished us. Our passing game was pretty good in the first half, but we were hesitant with our finishing. If you don't shoot, you don't score.

"We were unfortunate not to get a penalty in the first half, but I must credit Northern Ireland's players. They punished us where we were weak."

John, Isle of Wight: "Perhaps the likes of Andorra, Luxembourg, Gibraltar, San Marino, Faroe Islands, Liechtenstein and one or two others should have their own tournament every couple of years so they give themselves a chance of things like winning games and clean sheets. At the moment they purely exist to improve other teams' goal differences and that can't be good for their players."

  104. Manager reaction

    Northern Ireland 2-1 Finland

Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill, speaking to Sky Sports: "Confidence is the big issue for Kyle Lafferty. He's put a difficult year behind him and he's playing with a smile on his face. He was a real handful and he scored two fantastic goals.

"Automatic qualification is a realistic possibility, but our next target is Romania. It's as simple as that. We'll have to be at our very, very best to take three points against Romania, but we're capable of doing that."

"I thought some of their players were strong. They affected some of our players, who have played terrifically well against more exalted opposition. But I'm upbeat, because to be where we are after five games is not bad."

Republic of Ireland boss Martin O'Neill has demanded total commitment from his players tonight in what could be a crunch game.

Despite the away defeat by Scotland in November, O'Neill has always believed his team's qualification fate will be decided by their home form.

"We have given ourselves a chance by winning in Georgia and getting a point in Germany," said O'Neill on Saturday.

"The games here were always going to be important. We have to be ready."

"There were frustrations. I don't think Scotland played particularly well today. It begs the question, what could happen to this Gibraltar team if someone hits their best form?

"Scotland, playing at their best today, could have had double figures. I think somebody is going to give Gibraltar the biggest hiding in history soon.

"I would say this was Scotland's weakest performance of this qualifying campaign. It wasn't the spirited performance we've been used to. They went through the motions for a good 25 minutes of the second half. And yet they still won 6-1."

  115. GROUP F

    BBC Radio 5 live

Former Northern Ireland midfielder Danny Wilson at Windsor Park: "It's a fantastic ball from the free-kick, which was very well headed out, and Finland were unfortunate that it fell straight to Kyle Lafferty. It was a terrific volley - the keeper had no chance. If you put the ball into the danger areas, Lafferty will get on the end of it for you. He is such a threat."

  197. Post update

    Northern Ireland 1-0 Finland

Kyle Lafferty's cracking goal puts Northern Ireland on 12 points as we stand, that's one point behind Group F leaders Romania.

Still 55 minutes to go mind.

  198. GOAL

Scotland 3-1 Gibraltar - Shaun Maloney (Pen 34 mins)

    Maloney

Same corner, same end product. Shaun Maloney sweeps his penalty into the corner to put Scotland clear.

  199. PENALTY TO SCOTLAND

    Scotland 2-1 Gibraltar

The referee awards a penalty after Gibraltar goalscorer Lee Casciaro is adjudged to have brought down Steven Naismith.

  200. GOAL

Northern Ireland 1-0 Finland - Kyle Lafferty (33 mins)

    Laffterty

Pick that one out! What a goal! Kyle Lafferty puts Northern Ireland ahead with a cracking goal, sweeping in a volley from 15 yards right into the corner. Fantastic strike!

    Davies

Finland have a half-hearted penalty appeal waved away as Sebastian Sorsa tumbles in the box. Very evenly matched game at Windsor Park thus far.

  202. Post update

    Scotland 2-1 Gibraltar

    Former Scotland international Pat Nevin

BBC Radio 5 live at Hampden Park

"It was a messy goal, a scruffy goal. Steven Fletcher didn't even catch the header right, but it sneaked into the goal. Scotland are not playing particularly well, but they're in front and that's one thing we can relax about."

  203. Post update

    Scotland 2-1 Gibraltar

Former Scotland international Willie Miller on BBC Radio Scotland: "Fletcher's taken it well. He's reacted better than the three defenders who were marking him. I think that's a really good goal."

  204. GOAL

Scotland 2-1 Gibraltar - Steven Fletcher (29 mins)

    Fletcher

Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher has his first international goal in six years! A header from eight yards which just about creeps in through a crowd of players.

  205. Post update

    Scotland 1-1 Gibraltar

Former Scotland international Willie Miller on BBC Radio Scotland: "It might be in the second half that Gibraltar start to go a bit but, give them credit, they've done very well so far."

  206. GREAT SAVE!

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Finland

What a save! Northern Ireland should be ahead but it's a belting bit of goalkeeping. Finland lose the ball cheaply in a dangerous area and it breaks clear to Jamie Ward. He runs in on goal, leathers the shot on goal but Lukas Hradecky somehow keeps it out.

  207. Post update

    Scotland 1-1 Gibraltar

BBC Sport's Alasdair Lamont at Hampden

"That Gibraltar equaliser has flattened what had momentarily threatened to be a sense of anticipation around Hampden as Scotland finally made the breakthrough. The visiting fans though are euphoric at witnessing their first competitive goal. They sliced right through Scotland's reduced defensive unit and policeman Lee Casciaro finished in some style."

  208. How many will qualify?

The controversy over Northern Ireland's disallowed goal has sparked plenty of reaction. Was it the right call?

Joel Cropp: The right call, Finland had no one on the posts so Brunt was offside after the ball was touched back to him.

Michael O'Rourke: Brunt (the corner taker) is the one offside when he takes the return from the short corner.

  216. GOAL

Scotland 1-1 Gibraltar - Lee Casciaro (19 mins)

    Gibraltar

Extraordinary! We spoke before kick-off about Scotland playing one defender, and here's the downside. One ball through and Lee Casciaro is clean through, and he drills home a fine first-time finish!

"It took the Gibraltar Football Association 16 years to be granted Uefa membership, during which time the national team played the likes of Shetland, Sark and Orkney in the Island Games," writes BBC Scotland's Richard Wilson.

"They even faced Hibernian in a pre-season friendly two years ago, which they lost.

"Time spent in the foothills of the game hardened resolve. Progress was hard-fought, and when the team lined up for the national anthem ahead of its first internationally recognised fixture, against Slovakia, the players and the supporters wept.

"Only one member of the regular squad is a senior professional - Scott Wiseman, the Preston North End defender - while two play non-league in England - Bristol Rovers winger Jake Gosling and Adam Priestley, the Farsley striker.

"The rest combine ordinary lives with their football careers.

"Jordan Perez, the goalkeeper, is a firefighter; the Chipolina brothers, Joseph and Ryan, are an admin clerk and a customs officer respectively; two of the three Casciaros, Ryan and Lee, are policemen, while the third, Kyle, is a shipping agent..."

    Northerm Ireland

"Windsor Park is a building site at the moment, but this game is the hottest ticket in Belfast this weekend. Just less than 10,000 have been lucky enough to grab the available seats.

"Finland have only scored one goal in their last five internationals, and that was an own goal. There is big optimism here among Northern Ireland fans.

"Mexico 86 was a long time ago, Northern Ireland are dreaming of a return to football's big stage."

  241. Muller v Muller

    Georgia v Germany (17:00 BST)

World champions Germany are playing this afternoon, and an interesting stat I've just seen is that current forward Thomas Muller has now got more caps than legend Gerd Muller.

Gerd scored a ridiculous 68 goals in his 62 caps, while Bayern forward Thomas has 26 goals in his 63 appearances. Shoddy.

    Mexico 1986.

It's nearly 30 years since Northern Ireland qualified for a major tournament and they may never get a better chance. A place in the top two in the group will see them through to France remember.

Will we see Chris Baird in Bordeaux? Paddy McNair in Marseille?

  253. We will shock you

    Scotland v Gibraltar (17:00 BST)

    Gibraltar

Gibraltar manager David Wilson says if his team can recreate their performance against Germany they can shock Scotland.

The Group D minnows have lost all four Euro 2016 qualifiers so far, but did enough in the 4-0 defeat to the world champions to show they are improving.

And Wilson says his team can prove ex-Celtic striker John Hartson wrong, who described them as a "pub team."

"We did things wrong against Germany but still came away with a fantastic result," he said.

"If we do the small things and we do it well we can upset anyone. It's happened for lesser teams than us on bigger stages."

  254. Who goes through to France?

    An idiot's guide

There are nine groups and the top two from each will book a Euro 2016 spot, accounting for 18 of the 24 places.

The third-placed side with the most points (discarding those earned against the team finishing sixth in groups as one group has five teams) will also make it.

This leaves eight other teams who have finished third in a group to play off over two legs to provide another four sides. So that's 23, while France qualify automatically as hosts.

    Simple.

"I don't think there's a Scotsman in the world who would say when they hear Flower of Scotland, they won't sing it."

  256. We meet again old friend

Northern Ireland v Finland (17:00 BST)

    Northern Ireland v Finland

Michael O'Neill is preparing to do battle with a familiar face as an old friend attempts to derail Northern Ireland's Euro 2016 dream.

Finland are the opponents at Windsor Park, led by Mixu Paatelainen, the man who gave O'Neill his coaching break as his number two at Cowdenbeath.

"We both know each other inside out and how our teams will play," said O'Neill.

O'Neill admits he and Paatelainen have declined to swap advice about other teams on the road to France, but accepts the two men know each other's style.

"We're similar to players, I think. When you've played at a club with someone and then you've worked briefly with them as a coach, there's obviously a relationship there.

"But we didn't spend hours on the phone or anything up to that, so the relationship hasn't changed at all."
