Craig Malpass:, external Any goal from half-way looks good but isn't as technically impressive as the likes of Zamora's or Defoe's. Bobby wins it for me.

    Defoe or Adam? You decide.

    - Newcastle took 78 minutes to have a shot on target in this match.

    - The Black Cats have won five successive league derbies against Newcastle United for the first time in their history.

  8. Goal of the weekend?published at 18:39 British Summer Time 5 April 2015

We have seen a few belters this weekend haven't we?

Charlie Adam's 65-yard strike, Bafetimbi Gomis' acrobatic volley, Bobby Zamora's dink, Wayne Rooney's strike and now Jermain Defoe's beauty.

Which one was your favourite and why? You can have your say on 606 on BBC Radio 5 live now.

I would argue Defoe's strike was more difficult than Adam's. I'm sure I will get some grief for that though.

  9. Postpublished at 18:36 British Summer Time 5 April 2015

    Ian Wright
    Former Arsenal striker on 606

"Defoe's goal was brilliant. It is the kind of goal that gets you off your seat and that he is capable of scoring. That is why Sunderland went out and got him because he is a match-winner."

  10. Manager reactionpublished at 18:33 British Summer Time 5 April 2015

Newcastle boss John Carver on BBC Sport: "We weren't at the races but at least we had a go in the second half.

"You can only say so many things to the players. I see good things all week on the training ground and I didn't see any of that in the first half. I want us to be progressive.

"I am getting fed up with the question of our season being dead. You try telling our fans that. We can't have that. The guys in the dressing room have to do something about it.

"We have 35 points and that might not be enough. We need to go and win some games."

  11. Manager reactionpublished at 18:29 British Summer Time 5 April 2015

More from Newcastle United boss John Carver about goalkeeper Tim Krul congratulating Jermain Defoe on his goal: "If there's one guy who cares about this club it's Tim Krul. Whenever we have issues Tim is the guy who steps forward. Give me Tim Krul any day of the week. He is Newcastle United crazy.

"We get slaughtered when we're not sportsmanlike and when you see skill like that you have to accept it.

"This will hurt for weeks, months and years until we beat them. We are down to the bare bones but we should come to a stadium like this and do better than we did. It will define my spell in charge. You have to win these games and we are not doing that. We played well two weeks ago and so badly today."

  12. Manager reactionpublished at 18:25 British Summer Time 5 April 2015

Newcastle boss John Carver: "We were abysmal in the first half. We were poor. I always say a side of mine will give 100% and we didn't. It was a world-class goal on Jermain Defoe's weaker foot and if we had gone in at half-time at 0-0 I would have been delighted. We were second best in every department. It wasn't good enough.

"We were so negative. Every day on the training ground I am the most positive man you will ever meet, I don't put shackles on anyone I want them to be exciting but for whatever reason we were so negative out there. The back four is a makeshift back four and they deserve a bit of credit but the other units of the team weren't good enough."

  14. Postpublished at 18:18 British Summer Time 5 April 2015

    Alan Green
BBC Radio 5 live at the Stadium of Light

"Sunderland are going to fight for it. Critically they have moved to 29 points and there are now five teams below them. Look at their remaining games - they could lose five of them but if they win two of them, say the home games, to take them to 35 points, I think they will be safe and job done for Dick Advocaat. There will still be anxiety around the club but I think this is a big result for them today."

  15. Manager reactionpublished at 18:16 British Summer Time 5 April 2015

Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat to BBC Sport: "It was great, especially when you win the game! When we arrived on the bus we got a great feeling straight away.

"We pressurised them from the start and didn't give many chances away. It was such a nice goal it has to count for two!"

I'm afraid it doesn't work like that Dick. There would be a lot claiming for that this weekend.

  16. 'The fans gave us a boost'published at 18:12 British Summer Time 5 April 2015

Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat: "It was working from the beginning to the end, overall it was a well deserved win, I am very proud of them. It was a brilliant goal and besides that we had more opportunities to score more goals.

"You could see that the front three worked so well together. It helps the midfield when the strikers work hard. Since I arrived the fans have been excited and if you can get them behind you it gives you an extra boost.

"We have three home games to go and we must get those points there as well. Now we concentrate on Crystal Palace. I am really happy for the players and the fans."

  17. Postpublished at 18:08 British Summer Time 5 April 2015

    Former Scotland international Pat Nevin
BBC Radio 5 live at the Stadium of Light

"The thing I liked about Defoe today was that he got himself into some great positions but they didn't have the quality to pick him out. In the end, the goal he scored came from nothing and he still did the right thing and chased down. It is great professionalism from him.

"Newcastle's season has been petering out for a while. John Carver needed to win this one. To be fair, that squad is not incredibly strong and they have not replaced the people they have sold with any quality. Thaat they are where they are in the table at the moment is down to how well the previous manager did earlier in the season."

  18. Toon safe yet?published at 18:05 British Summer Time 5 April 2015

After that performance, you can't help but ask are Newcastle totally safe yet?

They should have enough, nine points clear of safety, but not if they play like that.

Newcastle's players need to ask themselves a few questions. That was poor.

Sunderland goalscorer Jermain Defoe: "It's one of my best! With my left foot as well. Even a tap-in would be massive in a game like this.

"As the ball was dropping I was just concentrating on the strike, during the week I've done a lot of shooting and as soon as it left my foot I knew it was in.

"It was an unbelievable feeling when it went in. I was very emotional for some reason, as everyone wanted the three points so badly.

"I tried to blank it out as if you think about the pressure too much you get tense and can't perform. The lads have been telling me what today would be like with the atmosphere and it was amazing. We've beaten them for a fifth time in a row and what a feeling. Hopefully the fans can be happy and we can kick on."
