Sam Payne: Well that's April goal of month already completed this weekend then. What a treat

Jeremy Smith: What a goal that is! Don't think Jozy Altidore would have put that in...

K Love: That goal tops the lot, take a bow Defoe

Matt Blazey: Newcastle have been so poor. Even worse when this is the only game of the season you have to look forward to.

"We've been asking for quality. There hasn't been until now. It is slightly behind him and he is 24 yards out but that is Defoe at his international best. It is up there in the pantheon of the best goals he has scored. Put three goalkeepers in that goal and that is not getting saved."

That was worth the wait. After a half of little quality, Jermain Defoe lights up the match with an absolute stunner.

The Sunderland striker looks a little emotional as he leaves the pitch at the break rubbing his eyes.

I think a few of us are rubbing our eyes at what we have just seen as well.

The home fans are in party mode.

Where on earth has he pulled that from? A long hopeful ball is punted towards the Newcastle box, Steven Fletcher rises like a salmon to flick the ball on, and Jermain Defoe wallops the dropping ball with his left foot into the roof of the net from 20 yards. A stunning, stunning strike.

"The quality of the ball in hasn't been good enough in the last 15 minutes. A couple have ended up bobbling around in the box but haven't fallen for the Sunderland forwards."

What was that? Connor Wickham races clear down the right, after a touch from Steven Fletcher, but his attempted low cross is absolutely woeful. Cleared by the first man about five yards away from him.

AndyMac: Carver, how can you score if you haven't got the ball?

James Nelson: Has completely got his tactics wrong. No attacking threat at all. Perez needs some help upfront.

John de Vliering: Very dull game at the Stadium of Light. Not a lot of quality on show. Still a derby though, loads of passion and atmosphere!

Another half chance for Sunderland as Connor Wickham finds space inside the penalty area but his shot towards the near post is easy for goalkeeper Tim Krul.

Second booking quickly follows as Ryan Taylor is shown yellow for taking out Seb Larsson.

Jack Colback is still public enemy number one to the Sunderland fans. The former Black Cat has an object hurled at him from the stands as he looks to take a throw - ridiculous.

First booking of the match to Santiago Vergini as he tugs back Ayoze Perez. I'm surprised it has taken 39 minutes.

How's your touch Jermain? Defoe looks like he has a clear run through on goal but his touch takes him sideways and Newcastle's defence recovers to clear. A real chance wasted.

Remy Cabella loves a step over. It is like a high kick from one of the Spice Girls as he drags his leg over the ball - about as useful as well... Just deliver the ball.

Ryan Taylor whips in a free kick from the right for Newcastle but it is absolute waste as the ball loops into goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon's hands. There a few few things more frustrating in football than a wasted delivery.

The fans at the Stadium of Light took part in a minute's applause in the 17th minute for those who lost their lives in the crash of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in July last year, which included two Newcastle United fans...

Former Newcastle midfielder, now at QPR, Joey Barton on Twitter:, external Very rarely say it but touch of class from Sunderland fans there... #MH17

Katy, London: Huge respect for the Sunderland fans for their response during Newcastle's 17 minute tribute for MAS17. They may be massive rivals but for that one minute they were all united as football fans.

John Carver doesn't look particularly happy at the moment. He urges his side forward with a clenched fist. They have been non existent as an attacking force.

Ryan Taylor gives him that extra bit of effort with a thunderous challenge in the centre of the park. Fair tackle as well.

Newcastle's first shot of the match and it won't live long in the memory. Yoan Gouffran volleys horribly wide as a free-kick is cleared to him 20 yards out.

"To say one negative thing about Sunderland, they have had plenty of the ball, plenty of chances to deliver the ball into the box and plenty of corners but no clear-cut chances yet."

Sunderland right back Billy Jones, making his first start since January, is causing all sorts of problems down the flank. Newcastle's defence - or lack of it - are helping him mind.

Inches away from the opener. Connor Wickham climbs well at the far post and heads Seb Larsson's left-wing corner onto the outside of the post, via a deflection off Moussa Sissoko.

Newcastle are struggling to get hold of the ball at the moment as Sunderland just keep coming at them. They don't look particularly troubled at the back - but surely the pressure will tell if it continues like this?

Steven Fletcher wins another corner for the hosts.

"I like the way Sunderland are moving the ball around in midfield. I would love to see Defoe on the ball a little bit more, just to see if he has lost any of his sharpness while he has been away. There has been little going forward from Newcastle."
