Hull go on their first foray forward, which in turn lifts the volume up another notch. But Stephen Quinn's cross from the left corner of the Burnley penalty area is too strong and goes over the outstretched boot of team-mate Ahmed Elmohamady.

Burnley are straight on the front foot, winning a corner which the Hull defence deal with comfortably.

Handshakes and smiles in the tunnel as respective captains Michael Dawson and Jason Shackell line up side by side. Few signs of nerves on the faces of the two sets of players. But you can't fool us lads, we know your tickers will be beating that little bit harder. Almost show-time...

  7. Burnley 'still alive and kicking'published at 14:56 British Summer Time 9 May 2015

The Burnley players emerge from their dressing room to line up against their Hull rivals in the narrow KC Stadium tunnel. And veteran defender Michael Duff reckons there is still plenty of belief that the Clarets can stay up.

"It is hard to explain to people on the outside but, at any point during the season, if you'd have walked into the dressing room and been told this group was around the bottom of the table, it would have been hard to believe," says the 37-year-old.

"That's because there's such positivity and that won't change. We are still alive and we're still kicking.

"It is going to be hard. We are under no illusions where we are or what we have to do. We are fully aware of what we need to do but whilst there's a chance there's still positivity."

No wonder Steve Bruce has looked nervous in the last few weeks - this race for survival is going down to the wire.

"We realise the importance of this match but it won't be defining," said the Hull boss.

"We would love to post a result on the board because it will put us in a healthy situation, but who can predict how it's going to be?

"It's been so up and down it's been ridiculous. I think we might need a couple of results.

"That's my gut feeling at the moment. Is four more points enough? You would be very unlucky to go down with 38."

Andrew Pickering: We were relegated the moment the board failed to back Dyche.

Robert Lonsdale: Deserve a lot more points on the board and have been extremely unfortunate.

Layla Marks: I'd like to say it's been a fun journey in the Premier League... But it hasn't. At all.

  12. Stats of the daypublished at 14:47 British Summer Time 9 May 2015

    • Hull have won just two of their previous nine Premier League matches (W2, D2, L5).

    • Burnley have won only one of their last 14 league games

    • In the reverse fixture in November, Burnley won 1-0 to earn their first victory of the season.

Former Hull striker Dean Windass, speaking earlier on Football Focus: "Everyone is well aware of what this game means and how important it is in the club's bid to stay up. But Burnley need all three points to stay up. So the tension is there for both sides.

"If we win today it doesn't mean we're safe - but it will take us one step closer."

"It's Hull's most significant league game since the final-day draw against Cardiff that got them back into the Premier League two years ago, with a feeling that one more win might be enough to keep them there - whilst defeat would hugely increase the threat of relegation.

"To add further tension, it's a game against a club that has stuck in the Tigers' claws in recent times.

"Burnley, of course, absolutely have to win all their remaining three games to even have a chance of staying up, but any optimists left in the Clarets camp will welcome the run beginning here.

"The Lancashire side have won eight of the last nine meetings of the clubs, and been victorious in all of their last four visits to East Yorkshire."

Permutations was the part of A-level maths that nobody liked. And they are enough to bring even the most battle-hardened football journalist out in cold sweats. So, for now, let's keep the number crunching simple...

Hull will move three points clear of the bottom three with a win and defeat for fourth-bottom Leicester.

Burnley will be relegated if they don't beat the Tigers.

And the Clarets could also go down even if they win. A Leicester win against Southampton, Newcastle avoiding defeat by West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa not losing to West Ham would see to that.

Seeing one of your relegation rivals climb out of the bottom three at your expense is hardly the ideal pre-match preparation. Unfortunately that is exactly the scenario that faces Hull.

Sunderland's 2-0 win at Everton in the lunchtime kick-off has lifted them out of the relegation zone and up to the lofty heights of 14th.

If you're after a live example of a six-pointer, rather than just reading a definition, then you're in the right place.

Third-bottom Hull + rock bottom Burnley = one heck of a survival showdown.

    Both teams must win. Simple.

    Hull v Burnley

Six-pointer (noun): a football match between two teams in similar positions in the league table, considered as being worth six points as it not only gains the winning team three points but denies three points to the losing team.
