Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel: "If you look at the squad we've assembled, we don't shy away from a fight. We got into a bad position but the attitude was spot on. We've worked really hard and got our rewarded.

"The manager is the best I've played for. He's kept going and believed in what we've built here. He's built a squad that reflect him as a person, because he doesn't shy away from a fight."

So here are the standings. Leicester's point moves them safe, and out of the bottom six. Sunderland still need another point to be sure.

Leicester captain Wes Morgan: "We knew we had to keep calm. A point is a great result. To get from where we were 18 months ago to where we are know, I'm delighted. A lot of people wrote us off a couple of months ago, and I feel we've proved a lot of people wrong."

The reaction from Sunderland's fans is a little more muted - until they hear Newcastle have lost 2-1 at QPR. Defeat, too, for fellow relegation rivals Hull, who lose 2-0 at Tottenham.

Leicester's players embrace each other at the final whistle; manager Nigel Pearson raises his arms in celebration, the fans chant 'We are staying up', the club's Thai owners smile in the directors' box.

It has been a magnificent effort from the Foxes. Seven points from safety with nine games to play, they have stayed up with a match to spare. Well done, Leicester.

"That will do for Leicester. There have been some special ones, but this has to go down as the greatest relegation escape the Premier League has ever known."

Well, that's one way to start a debate, Guy.

Leicester are running down the clock pretty comfortably here - and then, suddenly - a chance!

Sunderland keeper Costel Pantilimon surges from his line to try to deal with a through ball that he should leave to captain John O'Shea. The ball runs loose to Andrej Kramaric... but the Croatia international is wasteful, and the shot sails over.

"Nigel Pearson's side are almost there. The fans in the away section are singing: 'We are staying up.'"

Leicester striker Jamie Vardy turns on the edge of the penalty area, and feeds Andrej Kramaric to his right. Could there be a winner here? No, the shot is deflected into Costel Pantilimon's hands.

But Sunderland can't work the ball forward to start an attack, and suddenly Jeffrey Schlupp is racing on to a through pass. This time, Pantilimon is quickly off his line to boot clear. A tense finale, this...

Steven Fletcher hasn't scored for Sunderland since November, but he almost puts that right. Adam Johnson, who has played well since coming on, crosses in from the right, and Fletcher glances just over.

Black Cats full-back Billy Jones has hobbled off, unable to continue, and Anthony Reveillere replaces him for the last five minutes.

It's going to end 0-0 this, isn't it?

It looked like being an exciting, open game in the opening few minutes. It's been gripping drama, but largely for its feistiness rather than its football.

Seb Larsson collects a booking for hacking down Marc Albrighton, but Esteban Cambiasso curls the free-kick way over the bar.

Back at the Stadium of Light, the tension is palpable. Sunderland have to defend a corner. Striker Danny Graham doing his bit for the team, is back defending to glance the ball away.

Oldham's push towards Premier League safety under manager Joe Royle in May 1993 was little short of sensational. Six points from safety with three games left, they had it all to do - and did it.

First they won at title-chasing Aston Villa, a result that handed the trophy to Manchester United, then they beat Liverpool before winning a nerve-shredding final-day classic 4-3 against Southampton - staying up on goal difference at Crystal Palace's expense.

Yes, the Latics were relegated 12 months later, and haven't been back to the top flight since, but this was a moment to remember.

  19. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 16:33 British Summer Time 16 May 2015

Another change for Leicester. Top scorer Leo Ulloa, who has done his best in the face of some pretty sturdy treatment from John O'Shea, makes way from Andrej Kramaric.

Meanwhile, Sunderland win their millionth corner. The visitors' defence once again stands firm. They have been resolute today.

  20. CLOSE!published at 16:29 British Summer Time 16 May 2015

Sunderland substitute Adam Johnson cuts in from the right on to his left foot in search of a winner - and the shot towards the near post is good, but Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel pushes it behind for a corner. The visitors deal with the set piece, and edge closer to that precious point...
