Meanwhile, Leicester manager Nigel Pearson has taken off attacking midfielder Riyad Mahrez and put on the more defensively-minded Danny Drinkwater. That suggests he'll be happy with a point. Might have to revise my prediction about this match not ending 0-0 now.

As things stand, a point will be good enough to see Leicester safe. Sunderland won't quite be there - they'll need one more point from their final two games to be certain. Those final two games are away to... Arsenal and Chelsea. Mind you, Hull - currently third from bottom - have to play Manchester United yet. Twists and turns to come...

Sensational developments at Loftus Road. Leroy Fer has put QPR in front against Newcastle.

Back at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland left-back Patrick van Aanholt surges forward from left-back and drills a shot that whizzes wide. There's an 'ooh' from the home fans, once they look up from searching their smartphones for scores elsewhere. Hello, if you're scanning this page.

And at White Hart Lane, better news still. Danny Rose has given Tottenham a 2-0 lead against Hull.

QPR may be down, but at least they're making a game of it against Newcastle, drawing level at Matty Phillips converts Charlie Austin's cross. A goal that makes life a little more nervy on Tyneside, to the delight of all on Wearside.

There's another roar around the Stadium of Light. Sunderland push forward, sensing their chance to get safety secure once and for all. But they can't make anything of a corner, and Riyad Mahrez surges away for Leicester on the break - only to lose his footing. End to end, this, but still not many clear chances. Meanwhile, at Loftus Road...

There has now been a goal at White Hart Lane, and it's great news for both Sunderland and Leicester. Relegation rivals Hull, who started the day in the bottom three, are trailing at Tottenham, with Nacer Chadli scoring.

Almost a quarter of a century ago, Sheffield United arrived in the top division - and got off to an horrendous start, failing to win any of their first 16 league games.

They finally recorded their first victory on 22 December 1990, beating Nottingham Forest 3-2. Led by such luminaries as future movie star Vinnie Jones and future Manchester City football administration officer Brian Marwood, United claimed 36 points from 19 games over the second half of the season and finished in a comfortable 13th place.

A roar goes up around the Stadium of Light. For a moment, I wondered if there might have been news of a goal in one of the other games affecting the relegation scrap. But no - it's as you were at half-time: Newcastle lead 1-0 at QPR, Hull are drawing 0-0 at Tottenham.

Leonardo Ulloa is having to scrap for every chance this afternoon, but he almost opens the scoring for Leicester with a cute back flick from Marc Albrighton's cross into the box - and Patrick van Aanholt knees the ball over his own bar for a corner.

Albrighton takes it - and Ulloa seems to be having his shirt tugged by John O'Shea, but gets nothing from referee Martin Atkinson as he heads wide at the near post.

We're back under way here. And I stand by my prediction that this game won't end 0-0.

  13. HALF-TIMEpublished at 16:02 British Summer Time 16 May 2015

I've been looking at some classic relegation escapes from the past this afternoon as Sunderland and Leicester look to complete a push towards safety.

With that in mind, I'd like to point you towards 'West Brom's Great Escape', a show on BBC Radio 5 live at 22:00 BST this Monday.

It's a look back on West Brom's escape of 2005 when they amazingly avoided relegation on the final day of the season despite being bottom of the league. It includes interviews with former West Brom manager Bryan Robson, striker Rob Earnshaw and defender Paul Robinson.

Leicester enjoyed a good deal of possession in that first half, winning a lot of set pieces, but without creating too many clear chances.

Ben Pringle: Well done Lee Cattermole. Only you could equal the most yellow cards in a season after being out for two months.

Lee Cattermole then immediately pushes his luck by bringing down Riyad Mahrez near the halfway line. Referee Martin Atkinson settles for handing out a talking to this time.

  18. YELLOW CARDpublished at 15:45 British Summer Time 16 May 2015

The least surprising moment of the afternoon - a booking for Lee Cattermole. The Sunderland midfielder can't stop Marc Albrighton's progress down the right, and brings down the Leicester man - collecting his 14th yellow card of the season.

Cattermole has been booked more times than anyone else in the Premier League during 2014/15.

Robert Huth in the thick of things. First the Leicester centre-back goes in a little aggressively on Sunderland keeper Costel Pantilimon at a corner; then he concedes a free-kick right on the edge of his own penalty area by bringing down Danny Graham...

Seb Larsson plays the free-kick short to Connor Wickham, but Leicester's wall is out quickly from behind the vanishing spray to block.
