James, Southampton: Surely Crystal Palace. Tipped for the drop after Pulis left and even more in the mire after Warnock experiment. Form since Christmas has been exceptional. Wins against a whole host of the usual top-six suspects. If they can keep Pardew and carry that form over a whole season, who knows!

Are there two players who sum up the Manchester United v Arsenal rivalry more than Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira. The two clashed regularly during the late 1990s and early to mid 2000s, memorably in the tunnel at Highbury in 2005.

Angel di Maria v Aaron Ramsey doesn't quite possess the same ferocity.

Stoke forward Jon Walters is a guest on Match of the Day 2 Extra, currently on BBC One, BBC Radio 5 live and here on the website, but he also popped down for a quick chat with BBC Sport online before going on air.

Sticking with our theme of the season's overachievers, the Republic of Ireland international said: "If you look at the start of the season, we wanted to push on from last season, and I think we have.

"A lot of people would have tipped Southampton for struggling with a new manager, and getting rid of a lot of players but they have surprised a lot of people with how well they have done.

"Swansea have always been there and thereabouts, but in terms of injuries and what we have dealt with this year and how we managed to get where we are, we've done pretty well.

"You don't want to be battling relegation year on year, you want to improve and that was our aim. We set our target to be where we are now, and hopefully we can improve again in the last game of the season."

Aston Villa's Premier League place was also assured yesterday. This only came later, though, after Villa had been humbled at Southampton. One man took the headlines...

"Southampton were absolutely brilliant from the first minute to the last. They won the vast majority of tackles and the pace of play was too much for Aston Villa. You can have one or two players having an off day but not nine or 10. Villa were dreadful. Ronald Koeman has to be a contender for manager of the season considering the players he lost."

On Sadio Mane's record two minute and 56 second hat-trick: "I never thought Robbie Fowler's record would ever be beaten."

The previous fastest Premier League hat-trick was four minutes and 33 seconds by Fowler for Liverpool against Arsenal in 1994.

I've just seen footage of the Manchester City players arriving at the Liberty Stadium. This includes Wilfried Bony, who gets some high fives from a group of young Swansea fans. I suspect their parents might not be as welcoming if the former Swans striker gets on the pitch this afternoon.

Former England striker Alan Shearer: "Leicester City were dead and buried. No one could predict what they would go on to achieve. It's been quite staggering. Nigel Pearson has to be a contender for manager of the year."

In contrast to Hull and Newcastle, Leicester were jubilant yesterday as their Premier League survival was confirmed following a truly remarkable run of results. Yesterday's 0-0 draw with Sunderland was far from the finest of these but the point was all they needed.

Not bad for a weird manager capable of bending over and sticking his head in the ground.

However, Sunderland's point was not enough to secure their safety. Beating Arsenal in their game in hand on Wednesday will spare them a tense final day. Otherwise they will join Newcastle and Hull in the desperate scrap for safety.

  10. 'You saw Newcastle players shrink'published at 12:11 British Summer Time 17 May 2015

QPR v NewcastleImage source, Getty Images

Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer: "Tim Krul has had a really poor second half of the season. Newcastle did well in the first half but once QPR scored you saw players shrink. With Newcastle's form...you can't see them winning anything. They will probably have to rely on Hull not winning to stay up."

Former Newcastle midfielder Jermaine Jenas: "If Newcastle had won they would have guaranteed their Premier League status. But they just didn't seem to have it in them."

    Match of the Day

Hull's problems were compounded this week when Jake Livermore was suspended following a positive test for Cocaine...

Former England striker Alan Shearer: "I don't know if Jake Livermore has personal issues or not but he has let himself down and his team down terribly. They paid nearly £8m for him and then they find out he has done that. That is going to live with him for the rest of his life. He is tarnished with that now for the rest of his life. The timing is disastrous for Hull."

On Hull's 2-0 defeat at Tottenham: "Hull were so poor and so wasteful. Next week they have to find a way to score a goal otherwise they are relegated."

Former England midfielder Jermaine Jenas: "I've known Jake since he was a young lad and I know deep down he is a good lad. He has gone through some very tough personal issues which have been hard for him. I would like to see Hull help him to some extent because it has been a tough year for the lad."

It was all doom and gloom with Hull and Newcastle yesterday. The Tigers went down 2-0 at Tottenham, while Newcastle let a lead slip to lose at already-relegated QPR. (take a bow Leroy Fer).

The results leave Hull in the one open relegation slot, two points behind United, with the former hosting Manchester United next and the latter welcoming West Ham to St James' Park. Expect tears.

"If Steven Gerrard's final 90 minutes at Anfield was designed to be a tribute to what Liverpool will miss from a player and personality who has eclipsed all others in their recent history, this did the job to perfection.

"Not, however, in a good way."

Speaking of Gerrard, here is what former England striker Alan Shearer had to say about him on Match of the Day last night...

"Steven Gerrard is an absolute giant of a player. I was England captain when he made his England debut and you could tell then that he wasn't a shy lad. He wasn't afraid to say what he wanted to say. He didn't feel intimidated when he came into the squad. When you consider some of the giants that have played for Liverpool, he is right up there with all of them."

Rob in Sheffield: I was playing for a new team for the second time, we'd played really well and were 2-1 up against top of the league. They got a free kick in injury time, I was on the post and as it came to me I handballed it instead of letting it go for a goal kick, they scored the resulting penalty and I felt like an idiot.

I once played in a junior team and a lad I was playing centre-back next to did a similar thing and started crying. I felt like Gary Lineker with Gazza in the 1990 World Cup semi.
