United keeping the ball well, sliding it left and right, making the Arsenal team move. Can they grab the second though?

Mesut Ozil swings a corner into the United area, which lands on the six-yard box and is cleared by Antonio Valencia. A bit of pinball action before United can get the ball away.

"Ander Herrera's been the best player on the pitch, although it's not been hard with what Arsenal have been showing. He's been very influential."

Juan Mata and Antonio Valencia are causing Arsenal all sorts of problems. The Gunenrs backline is stretching here and there to get the ball away. Marcos Rojo attempts a long drive, but David Ospina gets behind it well to collect. The keeper might have oven gloves on today, he's had his hands kept warm.

Olivier Giroud stands dejectedImage source, PA

"That was their first attempt and what are we in, the seventh minute of the second half? It's poor from Arsenal. It's as if they have come here as a free game with Sunderland and West Brom at home to come, there's no desire or urgency."

First shot for Arsenal, and it is not one to remember. Olivier Giroud with a flicked header into the path of Alexis Sanchez, but the Chilean's left-footed shot is high, wide and not so handsome. Unlike Sanchez himself.

"That was good from Falcao, he rode a few challenges, showed strength and desire but the free kick was taken too quickly and it came to nothing."

Lovely play from United, carving open the Arsenal defence with intricate play, but Ashley Young's final ball is poor, straight into the welcoming hands of David Ospina. A second goal is coming..

"Poor start from Arsenal, I thought Arsene Wenger might have given them a mouthful at half time but they need to go up a gear."

Radamel Falcao, well done lad. Fights and fights to get the ball and earns a free-kick and round of applause from the home fans. They love to see that. It was Carlos Tevez-esque. Is it enough for a permanent deal though?

Chris Smalling gets a nose bleed - not literally - as he finds himself running with the ball and ending up at the edge of the Arsenal penalty area. He has to pop the ball back to Marouane Fellaini after realising where he was. Captain, leader, legend, indeed.

And it's United on the attack immediately in the second half. Antonio Valencia puts in a lovely ball into the box, which Marouane Fellaini rises highest to meet, but he can't get enough on it.

Thanks for that Jon. Half time cuppas sipped, oranges sucked. Arsenal get the second half under way.

  16. 'United will back Van Gaal'published at 17:01 British Summer Time 17 May 2015

    MOTD2 Extra
    BBC One

With Manchester United hosting Arsenal this afternoon, we asked Stoke's Jon Walters, studio guest for MOTD2 Extra, if the Red Devils are set to make a concerted title bid next season?

"I don't see why not. Louis van Gaal's aim was to be in the top four and I am pretty sure there is going to be a lot of backing for him money-wise this summer with a few more key signings.

"He has got the basis of the team that he wants and he will be putting his stamp on it. He will be wanting to push on, go for the league, whether he will be close enough I am not sure because Chelsea and Manchester City will make it tough for them. But, I expect them to make a big bid."

Jay Hogaro:, external Not a bad first season from 25 year old Herrera. Surely only better things to come?

Christos Papaloizou:, external Blind & especially Herrera are the best signings we've done. Herrera is everywhere doing everything.

Dave Payn:, external Typical Arsenal under Wenger. When there's less pressure they play well. Bring on the pressure and they buckle.

  20. Bristol Rovers promoted to League Twopublished at 16:54 British Summer Time 17 May 2015

Bristol Rovers are back in the Football League after a season's absence. Rovers and Grimsby couldn't be separated after 120 minutes, but a penalty shootout has given them an emotional victory.

After five successful spot-kicks to give Rovers a 3-2 lead, Grimsby sub Jon-Paul Pittman blazed over the bar. After two more converted kicks, Lee Mansell sealed Rovers' promotion with a cool finish past James McKeown.

Joy for the Pirates, but heartache for the Mariners.
