Well, what a stormy end we had to the end of the domestic football season. Some might say it was typical of Scottish football to mar a great occasion with a bit of fisty cuffs at the end, but it didn't half make it exciting and will provide a fair few column inches in the coming days as the ramifications reverberate around Hampden, Fir Park and Ibrox.

We are hearing that there have been three red cards issued by referee Craig Thomson after the final whistle. Not surprisingly, they are Rangers' Bilel Mohsni and Motherwell pair Lee Erwin and Fraser Kerr, the latter having rushed in to defend Erwin and having a hair-pulling tussle with the Tunisian.

Meanwhile, Richard Gordon on BBC Radio Scotland is reporting that Erwin is saying it sparked off when he offered his hand to Mohsni and was told where to go in no uncertain terms.

Stuart McCall making it clear that he wants to continue in the job but perhaps hinting that he thinks he has a fight on his hand to convince his employers, who said they would revue the situation at the end of the season.

Motherwell players are coming back out on to the pitch for rousing reception from their fans.

That sad finish to the game almost overshadowed the fact that Motherwell have extended their 30-year stay in the Scottish top flight. They never approached the quality they had in previous seasons, but it was still enough to secure a deserved win over Rangers.

Rangers must rebuild in a second attempt to escape the Championship.

The stand behind one of the goals is empty because of the club's decision to limit the number of Rangers fans in response to the lack of tickets given to Motherwell fans at Ibrox. The home club will probably say they were justified in losing some revenue to not only make a point but also limit the backing Rangers have had at Fir Park.

It is all over now. Marvin Johnson again rampages down the Rangers right and lays it on a plate for Lionel Ainsworth and the winger's shot from the edge of the penalty box takes a deflection - off hapless Marius Zaliukas - once more and past the despairing Cammy Bell.

Haris Vuckic has sprung to life with a curling effort from 18 yards, but it is straight at goalkeeper George Long. But it all seems too late.

Another change for Rangers as Kris Boyd is hauled off - perhaps a sad end to the record scorer's Rangers career - with Nicky Clark taking his place up front.

Richard Foster is having a nightmare. Moments after a poor pass back, the right-back is dispossessed by Marvin Johnson but manages to rescue the situation with a tackle inside the area that concedes a corner.

KICK-OFF

Motherwell kick off in the Lanarkshire sunshine and, unless Rangers can change the course of events, we are 45 minutes away from the status quo - the Glasgow side remaining in the Championship and the Fir Park outfit extending their 30-year stay in Scotland top flight.

Rangers have had the bulk of the territory but have failed to capitalise on a nervous home side. The Glasgow side have lacked composure and their best chances have come from high balls lumped agriculturally into the Well penalty box.

The home side have worked their way into the game and probably have come closest to scoring.

Haris Vuckic finds Kris Boyd at the back post, but the striker heads wide of the Motherwell near post.

Motherwell striker Scott McDonald lives dangerously with what looks like a challenge from behind that sends Kenny Miller flying inside the penalty box. The Australian wins the ball, which is probably whey there was no whistle and finger pointed to the penalty spot.

Marius Zaliukas is having a nightmare for Rangers and blasts high over the crossbar after the ball falls to the central defender at the back post from a corner.

CLOSE!

Lee Johnson flashes a curling drive just wide of the far post from just outside the penalty box as the Motherwell midfielder goes close to opening the scoring.

YELLOW CARD

Rangers captain Lee McCulloch is the next man in referee Craig Thomson's book as he clatters Scott McDonald as he tries to rescue the situation after his own poor control.

Motherwell are beginning to exert some pressure of their own and Stephen McManus is found unmarked by a Marvin Johnson free-kick, but the centre-half heads wide with goalkeeper Cammy Bell left exposed and unhappy at his defence.

Lee Erwin is the main danger for the home side and the big striker flashes a shot across the face of goal from 16 yards.

A Motherwell fans' brolly strikes former Well man Lee McCulloch on the face as they attempt to retrieve a ball on the touchline. That could have been a nasty one. The fan is left remonstrating with a steward.

Motherwell striker Scott McDonald is inches from making contact on a low Lionel Ainsworth cross into the six-yard box as the home side at last threaten at the other end.

A shot on the turn from Haris Vuckic is blocked by a Motherwell leg just 12 yards from goal before the pressure is eased by a foul on defender Stephen McManus as Rangers continue to press.

YELLOW CARD

Rangers midfielder Andy Murdoch flies into a challenge on Stevie Hammell. The 20-year-old escapes with a booking when some referees could have pulled out the red.

Rangers are doing all the attacking, having most of the possession, but they have not entered the Well net despite knocking on the door and a fine cross from Richard Foster just evades Kris Boyd in front of goal.

This time, it was Motherwell midfielder Stephen Pearson who doesn't hold back and his lunging challenge leaves Rangers full-back Lee Wallace with a sore foot and a free-kick.

There is a bit of concern for the fitness of Motherwell midfielder Stephen Pearson. He picked up a hamstring problem on Thursday but was included in the starting line-up. However, he has been receiving some treatment close to kick-off.

Striker Scott McDonald scored two goals in the final day of the league season 10 years ago to defeat Celtic and hand the title to Rangers. Now in his second spell at Motherwell, the Australian could help deny the Ibrox side promotion.

Former Motherwell midfielder Nicky Law, now at Rangers, and younger brother Josh, who followed him to Fir Park, share a flat. But one of them will return home disappointed after today's final whistle. Who will get the top bunk tonight?

There are lots of sideshows at Fir Park today, of course. Should Rangers win on aggregate, manager Stuart McCall will be relegating the side he managed for four season until resigning in December. Ian Baraclough has been unable to improve on the second bottom place he inherited but could deny his predecessor promotion and put in further doubt his chances of continuing as Rangers boss.

Motherwell's victory on Thursday was the first time they had got the better of Rangers in 39 meetings since 2002. The Glasgow side have, however, won on their last four visits to Fir Park, albeit the last one was in 2012.

Three of those victories were by three or more goals - which would be enough for an aggregate win should that be repeated today.

Rangers will also have to do better than in the second legs of the two play-off matches that led to the final. Against Queen of the South, they were held 1-1 at home but progressed thanks to the 2-1 lead they established in Dumfries. In the semi-final, they lost 1-0 to Hibs but progressed because of their 2-0 win at Ibrox.

If Rangers are to win promotion, they must end Motherwell's run of seven home games without defeat. Ian Baraclough's side have not lost at Fir Park since Dundee left with a 1-0 win on 21 February.

Motherwell manager Ian Baraclough names an unchanged side. That means that experienced full-back Stevie Hammell and veteran former Scotland midfielder Stephen Pearson have recovered have recovered from knocks picked up in the first leg.

Speculation had suggesting that 37-year-old Rangers captain Lee McCulloch would return to Stuart McCall's starting line-up up front - against the club with whom he began his career before going on to grace the English top flight with Wigan Athletic and win 18 Scotland caps.

Instead, it appears that the veteran will be a straight swap for the suspended Darren McGregor in the centre of defence. That is one of three changes in Stuart McCall's side, with on-loan Newcastle United winger Shane Ferguson and off-form former Scotland striker Kris Boyd starting in place of Dean Shiels and Nicky Clark.

Rangers fans have long had an expectation that they would be playing in the top-flight again after a third successive promotion, but Hearts, who ran away with the Championship title, and now Motherwell have threatened to stop them in their tracks.

Fortunately, the shine was not taken off what was a wonderful occasion at Hampden Park as Inverness Caledonian Thistle lifted the Scottish Cup for the first time after edging out unlucky Falkirk in an exciting finale.
