Abhik Sanyal:  Get Charlie Austin & Jamie Vardy. Guaranteed heart, effort, pace, strength and goals. Can Man Utd not afford 25 mn for both?

Lee Garrod:  United need to be seen to at least be thinking of buying a striker, Rooney's getting complacent and lazy.

Hamza_16:  Rooney needs a strike partner that is strong tall and good in the air maybe a Harry Kane type of player that would be amazing.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaalspeaking to BT Sport about Michael Carrick dropping out of the side and Bastian Schweinsteiger coming in:

"I have to build him [Schweinsteiger] up. When you want to play him more for than 45 minutes you have to start with him.

"Everybody is saying he is a world champion and he has won a lot of things but every player has to prove that. To do that for Manchester United is not so easy but I have great confidence in him.

"I want to spare Michael Carrick for other matches. Last year he was very much injured and I want to prevent that."

And on questions surrounding Wayne Rooney’s goalscoring form:

"I have said to Wayne you don’t have to score today. When we win I am satisfied."

Newcastle defender Fabricio Coloccini has a nervous look in his eye as he goes through a tentative warm-up on the Old Trafford turf.

Is that because Steve McLaren has asked him to play at right-back today? Out of position and up against Memphis Depay? Rather you than me...

James Rimmer:  Great to see the gaffer give Januzaj a run of games. He'll be determined having not played often last season.

Eurofoot:  Mitrovic will give Daley Bilnd the fear. Expect a goal.

  14. Do United need a striker?published at 12:10

Man Utd v Newcastle (12:45 BST)

He's had a decade at the very top but is Wayne Rooney now struggling for the first real time?

He has netted only four goals, provided one assist and attempted just 14 shots on target in 20 Premier League games in 2015 so far.

In 2014, he scored 16 goals and assisted five more in 28 games.

  15. Rooney - champ or chump?published at 12:06 British Summer Time 22 August 2015

Man Utd v Newcastle (12:45 BST)

Ah, The Wayne Rooney Situation. Not a prog-rock band from the 1970s but a feeling that tends to hover around Old Trafford every year or so.

This time it's not the skipper agitating for a move, but a lack of form - specifically goals - which is causing the chatter in the stands and on the forums.

Put simply, is Wayne Rooney up to the job of leading the line for Manchester United and England?

"We don’t know what’s going wrong with Wayne Rooney’s goalscoring form. He probably doesn't know himself. I think he’s got four goals in his last 20, those stats aren't great for a supposedly world class player. But he is still a class player for me."

    Sunderland v Swansea (15:00 BST)

    Robbie Fowler
Former Liverpool striker on Football Focus

"Lee Cattermole has been speaking about Sunderland’s poor start to the season. He should be leading on the pitch, it’s not all about saying stuff after the game. Maybe he should look to change things while the game is happening.  At the moment they don’t look like they’re going to get a win. There seems to be dark clouds over Sunderland."

Just the one change for Manchester United from the side which beat Club Brugges in midweek. Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger makes his first start for the club in midfield, replacing Michael Carrick. Wayne Rooney continues up front alone.

Newcastle make three changes. Out go the suspended Daryl Janmaat, Moussa Sissoko and Papiss Cisse, in come Steven Taylor, Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic.
