A decent start for full debutant Bastian Schweinsteiger for Manchester United. The midfielder has made the joint most amount of passes so far, and just two of them have been unsuccessful (shown by the red on the pass map below).

Bastian Schweinsteiger is soldiering on for now. He doesn't look as though he is in as much discomfort as he was. The former Bayern Munich man has had a decent half so far as the graph in the next entry demonstrates.

"Newcastle had a terrible start but they've grown into the game since. For the first 15 minutes you thought this was going to be a good hiding. But now they're closing down well, pinching balls off Manchester United and are trying to break. 

"Steve McClaren is kicking every ball on the sidelines. His side have hit the bar with a header, had a couple of corners... They need to keep this tempo up now." 

Manchester United made a blistering start but Newcastle have weathered the storm and are starting to ping the ball about a lot more convincingly.It could have something to do with Steve McClaren, who is back on the touchline after departing his seat in the directors box.

"Aleksandar Mitrovic just had to put his head on it - the pace of the cross made it a lot easier for him. 

"Newcastle need to keep getting the ball in the box. The Man Utd defenders aren't great in the air."

Wayne Rooney is up for this. He's forces Tim Krul into another save before Newcastle break at the other end.

There's a chance for Massadio Haidara in the box but his touch is poor and he catches Daley Blind on the stretch. Yellow card for the left-back.

Tinashe:  LVG was right last season based on these first few games, Rooney is better in midfield than at 9.

Newcastle just can't get the ball out of their penalty area. They're dithering as Juan Mata forces a fine low one-handed save from Tim Krul.

Ayoze Perez brings down Matteo Darmian on the edge of the Newcastle area and it's a free-kick for the hosts.

Memphis Depay is eyeing it up but it's Juan Matta who has a pop and it's a comfortable save by Tim Krul, Plenty of bend on the effort but it lacked pace.

Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren is watching the first half from the directors box. He won't be happy with what he has seen so far. 

Louis van Gaal is seated in the dugout with legs crossed. His side have had 66% possession in the first 10 minutes.
