Watford's Ikechi Anya sends in a low and hard cross into the Southampton area but striker Odion Ighalo, whose view is obscured by two defenders, fails to get a touch as the ball goes through his legs.
When you get excited about the first corner of the game you know you are not watching a classic. The set piece - unsurprisingly judging by the match so far - doesn't amount to anything.
Southampton striker Graziano Pelle gets in front of defender Sebastian Prodl to meet a Shane Long cross but glances a header wide.

Just after Victor Wanyama picks up a booking, Watford send a cross into the area which Troy Deeney nods down for Jose Jurado only for Jose Fonte to crucially clear.

Jose Holebas strikes a left-foot effort sweetly from 20-yards but Watford striker Troy Deeney can't get out of the way and takes a blow to the midriff.

Southampton have to make an early substitution as Sadio Mane can't continue. Shane Long replaces him.
Sadio Mane is down for the third time in as many minutes much to the frustration of the home crowd, but he does look in a bit of bother as Southampton's medical staff attend to him.

Southampton forward Sadio Mane surges past left-back Craig Cathcart and puts in a cross for striker Graziano Pelle but Allan Nyom intercepts.
Ikechi Anya has looked lively at the start of the game and he gets to the right side of the Southampton box and puts a ball across the face of the visitors' area but there's no-one there to get on the end of it.
Cedric Soares is back on the pitch with a bandage around his head.
There's a bit of a hold-up in play as Southampton's Cedric Soares requires some treatment to a facial injury.
Watford produce some decent approach play but it's not backed up by the shot of right-back Allan Nyom as he sends his effort well, well wide.
Jose Jurado tries to play a long diagonal ball into the angled run of Ikechi Anya from the right flank but the pass is too close to Southampton keeper Maarten Stekelenburg, who gathers.
Watford boss Quique Sanchez Flores was succeeded at Valencia by Southampton counterpart Ronald Koeman and also played against him for Real Madrid when the Dutchman was with Barcelona.
There doesn't appear to be any hard feelings between the pair though as they shared a warm embrace just before kick-off.
