And Barnsley snatch the lead right back!

    Extraordinary!

Reece Wavara skins Bryan Oviedo and cuts the ball back into the path of the on-bombing midfielder Dan Crowley who applies an emphatic finish to the delight of Oakwell.

Club Brugge 0-4 Man United (agg 1-7) - Ander Herrera

Ander Herrera plunders a goal from the disintegrating Brugge defence, scampering through and slotting home under little pressure.

  3. goal

GOALpublished at 21:04 British Summer Time 26 August 2015

Barnsley 2-2 Everton - Steven Naismith (59 mins)

    Everton are level!

Steven Naismith heads home without a marker in sight and celebrates with a snarl.

  4. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 61 mins

Club Brugge 0-3 Man United (agg 1-6)

Ashley Young comes on in place of Juan Mata, who has been a classy, consistent presence for United in attack.

  5. Postpublished at 57 mins

Club Brugge 0-3 Man United (agg 1-6)

And Wayne Rooney should have his fourth.

The Brugge defence has evaporated into thin air. Juan Mata pierces their tissue-thin rearguard with another perceptive pass but Wayne Rooney's attempt to lift a little chip over the goalkeeper is pushed wide by Sinan Bolat.

No pressure on the ball from Club Brugge as they let players past them and Wayne Rooney had a simple finish for his third.

You wait 10 games for one goal and then three come along at once.

Wayne Rooney complete his hat-trick with a third goal that is very similar to his first.

Juan Mata supplies the bullet this time with a little nudged through ball and Rooney slips home the finish with ease.

  8. goal

Barnsley 2-1 Everton - Kevin Mirallas (50 mins)

Everton needed to lift themselves after a limp first half and Roberto Martinez seems to have stiffened some sinews with his half-time team-talk.

Kevin Mirallas sweeps home a classy volley as the Barnsley defence fail to make a convincing clearance.

Memphis Depay folds under the challenge of Laurens De Bock in the area, but contact was slight, if at all, and the referee waves play on.

Club Brugge's defence went AWOL. They gave the ball away in midfield and Ander Herrera was very unselfish. Wayne Rooney will not get an easier chance than that all season.

Slicker than Cristiano Ronaldo's hair product.

Manchester United carve Brugge apart as Memphis Depay feeds Ander Herrera in the box and the Spaniard unselfishly squares the ball back to Wayne Rooney to side-foot past a wrong-footed Sinan Bolat.

    Very nice indeed.

  13. KICK-OFFpublished at 46 mins

Club Brugge 0-1 Man United (1-4 agg)

    Back up and running.

Bastian Schweinsteiger has slotted in alongside Michael Carrick at the base of midfield with Ander Herrera advancing into Adnan Januzaj's role just behind Wayne Rooney.

  14. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 20:46

Club Brugge 0-1 Man United (agg 1-4)

    A change for Manchester United.

Bastian Schweinsteiger is on in place of Adnan Januzaj.

Is that Louis van Gaal battening down the hatches for the evening?

Sporting Lisbon are 3-1 up on aggregate on a very decent CSKA Moscow side.

I only just found out that Jorge Jesus, the manager who got right up Tim Sherwood's nose when he was in charge of Benfica, has crossed the divide to take up the Sporting reins in June. Controversy squared.

    He's a brave man.

Job done for Manchester United so far but it hasn't been particularly convincing. Keeper Sergio Romero has only had to make one save but there are one or two concerns regarding the bigger picture. Wayne Rooney has got his goal but they haven't created too much going forward. If you're playing against better teams United could find themselves three or four down.

Manchester United have given away four or five half chances to Club Brugge and if they were playing a better quality side they would have conceded by now.
