Wayne Rooney peels wide into a channel and is fed by Juan Mata.

Mata is quickly on his bike in search of the return and is picked out by a low cross by Rooney.

The Spaniard beats the first of a mob of defenders with a quick shift of feet, but is robbed off the ball as his team-mates arrive on the scene.

Club Brugge are going to have a go. They have got nothing to lose and they are going to test Manchester United. It's all about the first goal.

Hearts in mouths on the United bench.

A long looping cross into their penalty area is met at the far post by Tom De Sutter.

Luke Shaw is across to make the block from his side-foot volley. If he hadn't made up the ground goalkeeper Sergio Romero was getting his knees dirty for the first time.

Luke Shaw goes on a little burst into the penalty area, but Adnan Januzaj's pass is a little overcooked.

Manchester United are pressing high and hard with Wayne Rooney on his own up front and Januzaj in a central role behind him and Depay out left

Some early encouragement for Brugge as the hosts' Boli Bolingoli Mbombo - a man leaving few vowels for anyone else - fires a cross-shot through the six-yard box and wide.

A whistle had already gone for a sneaky use of the hand by the winger.

A bit of amusement at the coin toss.

Referee Antonio Lahoz seems to have a coloured disc rather than a coin to help eliminate language barrier misunderstandings.

However it is not enough for the Spanish official to understand Wayne Rooney's insistence for the red side.

    Anyway, we are under way.

The teams are in the tunnel.

Wayne Rooney leads the Manchester United team out onto the Jan Breydel Stadium turf.

They are greeted with a mosaic from the Bruges fans. The home supporters have been singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" before kick-off to needle their United counterparts.

There's nothing like a bit of confidence from your manager as you try to overturn a two-goal deficit in a Champions League qualifier against Manchester United but Club Brugge's players might need to turn to someone else for a bit of inspiration.

"Miracles happen sometimes, but they are two goals in front and they are a very professional team," said the Belgium side's manager Michel Preud'homme.

"To get a miracle, you need to be perfect and you need the other to not play at his best potential. We have a lot of players out, too.

"If we want to have a chance, we have to be perfect. It will be very difficult, but let's pray."

Whatever the stars say, the stats suggest that Manchester United could be in for a nervy night.

United have lost their last two European away matches by two-goal margins: 2-0 at Olympiacos in the 2013-14 Champions League last 16, and then 3-1 against Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals.

They have won only one of their last seven European away fixtures, winning one, drawing three and losing three.

    Rest easy United fans.

Russell Grant, astrologer extraordinaire, says that tonight is going to be a leisurely watch rather than an edge-of-the-seat buttock-clencher.

    And he should know.

"Ander Herrera has shown when he has come in he has done good and I have to rest players like Morgan Schneiderlin, who has played every game so far."

THE ORACLE: Gary Doherty played centre half for Spurs but centre forward for Ireland. Shame he wasn't very good in either position.

As well as all the pride related to a return to the Champions League proper, there is some significant cash at stake for Manchester United.

Play-off losers are handed a £2.2m prize-money cheque along with their ticket to the Europa League.

Play-off winners get only £1.47m. Why? Because even if you lose every game in the Champions League group stage you earn £8.8m. Every win is worth an extra £1.1m.

    Ker-ching!

We've had Man Utd's David De Gea and West Brom's Saido Berahino not playing having been linked with moves but John Stones plays for Everton tonight and manager Robertro Martinez must feel the defender is mature enough and strong enough mentally to play.

Lazio, Sporting Lisbon and Bayer Leverkusen are all in Champions League action tonight - all scrapping for a place in Thursday's draw for the Champions League.

If United get there they will be drawn into a group featuring one of top-seeded Barcelona, Bayern, Juventus, Benfica, Paris Saint-German, Zenit St Petersburg and PSV Eindhoven.

If they don't, the delights of the Europa League await.
