So Southampton head out of the Europa League. 

Some people have been saying it's a blessing in disguise, but Ronald Koeman sounded like the kind of guy who was looking forward to the prospect of a European adventure this season. 

Not the trophy maybe, but some small glory at least.

Instead it's back to the Premier League. Norwich at home on Sunday, at 13:30 BST.

More from Southampton manager Ronald Koeman: "I think we started well and created good chances in the first 15 minutes but we made a mistake for their goal, Jay Rodriguez made a mistake when he can't afford to make a mistake.

"But I think the final result is not the result that we saw on the pitch."

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman, speaking to BT Sport: " Unlucky. In both games we were the better team, we had the most chances. We scored a goal at home that was disallowed and tonight we need a penalty for a handball from the free-kick. 

"Maybe it was the best performance until now, from our team. We worked very hard but sometimes you need good decisions. We didn't have that. In my opinion that makes the result.

"Sadio Mane wasn't 100% and it will be a long season. I didn't take that risk to put him in. We need him for more games."

The stand-out result of the night? Borussia Dortmund beating Odd of Norway 7-2 to win 11-5 on aggregate. 

The Germans were 3-0 down in the first leg after about 20 minutes -  think you'll agree, that's quite the comeback.

For my money, that was a seriously odd performance.

And that is that. Ronald Koeman gathers his crutches and trudges off down the line.

Obviously never a pen but Pusic was never going to reach the cross either - he opted to gamble on the tumble. 

Southampton have to gamble now. 

This is fizzing out now, you can feel the tie slipping towards the kind of five minutes that teams who are very good at home are very good at seeing out. 

You get the feeling Midtjylland have been here before.

It should be goodnight Southampton.
