Look at the Saints team. In 18 months Ronald Koeman has disassembled a squad containing the best hot bed of Homegrown talent and systematically replaced it with mediocre imports. They'll be the new Wigan Ath.

Hang about, there's still 45 mins to go yet...

Former Southampton manager Dave Merrington on BBC Radio Solent: "The manager has got decisions to make. I don' think he can continue to play five at the back. Maybe he could put Rodrigiez on the left and Tadic on the right. He's also got Long and Mane. He has attacking options and I think he has to make those decisions quickly."

Larstoftlarsen:  Rasmussen's nickname was given by his former youth coach who believed his heading ability resembled that of Duncan Ferguson.

So that is why striker Morten Rasmussen has got Duncan on his back!

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

Former Southampton manager Dave Merrington on BBC Radio Solent :"Southampton are going to have to show some composure. They are going to have to keep encouraging each other and make sure they don't get frustrated. You have to give Midtjylland credit. They are well organised and they are playing to their strengths."

  6. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:35

    Midtyjlland 1-0 Southampton

It's Midtyjlland who finish the first 45 the stronger - Pione Sisto's little flick almost plays in Morten Rasmussen - do we really call him Duncan - but Saints recover to clear.

All to do for Ronald Koeman's men from here.

  7. Postpublished at 45 mins +1

    Midtyjlland 1-0 Southampton

Just the two extra minutes added on as Maya Yoshida and Matt Targett fizzle out down the left wing.

Midtyjlland break but there's Jose Fonte again, he's everywhere at the back.

  8. YELLOW CARDpublished at 44 mins

    Midtyjlland 1-0 Southampton

This is officially the best time to score if you want to change a game but Southampton are hanging on here as Jose Fonte flicks a dangerous Pione Sisto cross out behind for a corner.

Jakob Poulsen takes an absolute age with it and is booked for time-wasting. Add it on ref!

Finally it comes in and Daniel Royer balloons over in comic fashion.

  9. Postpublished at 40 mins

    Midtyjlland 1-0 Southampton

Just over five to go before half-time and Midtyjlland almost double their lead - their best chance apart from the goal but Pione Sisto curls one over from the left of goal.

Where did all that space come from?

  10. YELLOW CARDpublished at 37 mins

    Midtyjlland 1-0 Southampton

What can I tell you Dave? As far I can see Graziano Pelle's been pretty much the only outlet.

Another Southampton corner is defended well, blocked by Petter Anderson's face at the front post as Jay Rodriguez connects.

Hang on, here's a yellow card for the striker - I can only say it must be for the way he tugged at Anderson's shirt, telling the midfielder to get up after he'd hit the deck.

    Midtjylland 1-0 Southampton

Former Southampton manager Dave Merrington on BBC Radio Solent:  "I hope Saints don't start that long ball and start to panic and just try and hit Pelle. You've got to mix your game up. I will find it interesting to see how long Koeman stays with three centre-backs while it remains 1-0."

  12. Postpublished at 33 mins

    Midtyjlland 1-0 Southampton

Morten Rasmussen is right in his element now he's got his goal.

Superbly channelling former Everton striker Duncan Ferguson as he holds the ball up on the halfway line, wins the foul, the time for his team to breathe with Southampton pressing hard.

I assume that is the Duncan connection anyway. Childhood hero?

Saints need a goal before half-time - they should have had two, you could argue.

  13. Postpublished at 20:19 British Summer Time 27 August 2015

    Midtyjlland 1-0 Southampton

Former Southampton manager Dave Merrington on BBC Radio Solent:  "As a coach, when you're back in your last third you don''t want to give anything away away from home. Jay Rodriguez won the ball and did well. He just had to make sure he plays the ball forward but he gets robbed and that's really cost us."

What's the response gonna be from Ronald Koeman and co now then?

As it stands they're on their way out of Europe, at the second hurdle, in the pouring rain.

How do you turn this one around?

    Morten Rasmussen

    Call me Duncan.

That's what he's got written on his shirt anyway. Former Celtic striker Morten Rasmussen slides into space in the box before finishing low and calm past Maarten Stekelenburg.

Saints gave the ball away at left-back, where Jay Rodriguez was covering, and have been punished for it.

Are we going 1-1 and penalties? Or are Saints on their way out?

It's all about Graziano Pelle's chest at the moment.

Every time Saints get the ball it's neat and tidy, patient play to work an opening to hit Pelle.

This time the slap-down is intercepted though.

  17. CLOSE!published at 23 mins

    Midtyjlland 0-0 Southampton

Massive chance wasted. The best so far.

Here's another Graziano Pelle slap-down and this time it's Steven Davis tacking on in the box. He's in a great position but the shot is straight at Johan Dahlin.

It falls to Jay Rodriguez, who fires into the side netting but the flag was up anyway.

  18. Postpublished at 20:08 British Summer Time 27 August 2015

    Midtyjlland 0-0 Southampton

Former Southampton manager Dave Merrington on BBC Radio Solent : "Martina has started well again tonight. He has got forward well.

"It's good to see Southampton's full-backs are pushing right up. They have got to do that because that's where the width is going to come from."

  19. Postpublished at 21 mins

    Midtjylland 0-0 Southampton

The rain has properly started now. The kind that ruins a week's camping holiday in half an hour.

James Ward-Prowse finds space but can only trickle a shot straight at the 'keeper, from outside the box.

  20. Postpublished at 18 mins

    Midtjylland 0-0 Southampton

Here's a bit more initiative from the Danes - massive pressure high up the pitch forces Matt Targett into a mistake but Saints somehow still escape with the ball.

They work a half chance for Jay Rodriguez, who skews a volley way over, leaning back.
