Aston Villa manager Remi Garde told BBC Sport: "It was a nice experience and a fantastic atmosphere. It was a tough game. I can be very happy with my team today, I saw smiles on their faces. 

"When you play with sadness it does not help you. I tried in the three training sessions we had to deliver my message. Nobody expected we were going to score two or three goals. 

"The difference between the two teams before was huge. Making sure we were well organised defensively was my priority. Some of the players who didn’t start today had problems during the week. Nobody will not play because he’s French or Spanish or British. I saw in training how good or bad they were."

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini: "Of course we're frustrated. We deserved to win the game. They had one shot in the whole game. I was happy with the way we played, especially in the second half but we were unlucky not to sore.

"I think we waited to find out which team we were playing. It's hard when you face a new manager. We played really well in the second half but didn't score.

On Raheem Sterling's penalty claim: "I don’t talk about it – the referee says it's not a penalty so it's not a penalty.

On the booing of Fabian Delph: "People will boo because fans never want players to leave their team, but for Delph it's important to move on with his career."

"I am quite happy for the boys," says new Aston Villa boss Remi Garde. Villa claim a point but remain rooted to the foot of the table.
