"It's all gone according to plan for Scotland in that first half. Gordon Strachan will be pleased at the dig and desire shown by his players. The full backs in particular have been in the mood. The players leave the field to a thunderous round of applause from the 10,000 or so Scotland fans in the stands."

Gibraltar goalkeeper Jamie Robba will sleep tonight. He's flying high into the Algarve air to deny the Scots time and again. His opposite number Allan McGregor could've been reading a few chapters of his Kindle, such has been his quiet night.

"Shaun Maloney is the king of the curler and he was inch perfect with that effort. His muted celebration probably sums up the mood. The pitch is now beginning to cut up quite badly in places. The weather has been more Aberdeen than Algarve over the last 24 hours."

Shaun Maloney seemed to know he had scored as soon as the ball left his right boot.

Scotland double their lead with a cracking goal. Alan Hutton dances round and through the Gibraltar defence with a bit of Prodigy dancing footwork and the ball eventually breaks to Shaun Maloney. The wee fella looks up before sending a pitching wedge of a shot into the far top corner with Jamie Robba stranded.

"Did I say it was coming? Chris Martin's first international goal and it was the easiest he will ever score. I think he may have nicked it off Greer though - his flick on looked goal bound. If Scotland continue playing at this tempo, it could be a very long night for Gibraltar."

Adam in Edinburgh: "Northern Ireland, Rep of Ireland and Wales all have a spine or majority of players who play in the English Premiership. Those who play there for Scotland are unused subs most of the time and the rest of the squad are made up of Championship and SPFL standard players. We may have the 'spirit' but we don't have the talent. Strachan has made a hash of these qualifiers though and should be made to realise that instead of seeing his tenure so far as being an improvement."

Jim in London: "Craig Levein was hounded for not picking Steven Fletcher and Gordon Strachan has taken stick for picking him. Maybe have a look at how things are set up beyond the manager and players. Why are they not as mentally tough as the Irish have been beating Georgia and Germany? Why are they eating burgers in Georgia and getting home tired before the next game?"

Ian, Algeria: "I wonder how Iceland got it so right, even in a group with Czech Rep & Netherlands?"

Ron, Aberdeen: "Gordon Strachan's reluctance to blood young players through to PLAY for the senior team has caught up with him. The Germans took through a lot of their U21s together 5 years ago and they matured together with the result that the won the World Cup. Gordon, if you don't play them you'll never find out how good they are!"

  9. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 20:22 British Summer Time 11 October 2015

Chris Martin, who opened the scoring, centres for Steven Fletcher following good work by Andrew Robertson and Shaun Maloney, but Fletcher sees his effort come back off the post and bounce to safety.

Gordon Strachan, sitting in the dugout and stroking his chin like a Roman Emperor, will be looking for more goals from his charges.

Another cross into the Gibraltar box and Matt Ritchie gets his noggin on it but the home defence clear their lines and the Scots remain a goal to the good.

Here's a thought as Scotland look to add to their goal tally... Gibraltar's population of about 30,000 is not that much more than Oban's in holiday season. Alan Hutton could be in his flip-flops as he slaloms through the home defence.

  13. Gibraltar 0-1 Scotlandpublished at 20:14 British Summer Time 11 October 2015

With the whiff of one goal in their nostrils, Scotland are in the mood for more. Steven Fletcher clatters into Jamie Robba as they contest a cross into the box before another cross causes fear and alarm in Gibraltar's ranks.

  15. Gibraltar 0-0 Scotlandpublished at 20:08 British Summer Time 11 October 2015

Alan Hutton slices through the Gibraltar defence for the umpteenth time in the opening 20 minutes but his cutback is gobbled up by the ever-alert Robba.

"The Scots continue to pepper the Gibraltar goal with shots and are really beginning to click. The tempo is good and the passing is slick but it still has an exhibition match feel. Gibraltar stand firm but you get the feeling a goal is coming."

Scotland force Gibraltar goalkeeper Robba into two saves in as many minutes. Steven Fletcher is first to test the keeper before Chris Martin forces him into action and another save.

"Scotland, Scotland" roar the Tartan Army. We'll see a goal soon, won't we?
