Middlesbrough striker David Nugent told Sky Sports: "We got off to a fast start against Forest (last weekend) and that seemed to help us out a little bit. Today we got the two early goals which gave us a nice lead.

"Leeds came back into it in the second half, they were the better team, but Diego Fabbrini killed it off with the third.

"We were grateful for that because Leeds were coming back into the game."

Middlesbrough midfielder Adam Clayton told Sky Sports: "It was far from straight forward.

"Leeds passed the ball really well and caused us problems - more than other sides have here.

"It was a lively encounter and there were a few tackles flying in, but it was played in a good spirit and we're pleased to get the win."

As things stand, they'll go a point behind leaders Brighton and five points clear of Reading in third. Even at this early stage of the season, that's a decent cushion.

That decision looks like it's fired Leeds up. Certainly Mirco Antenucci, who gave the referee's assistant a piece of his mind immediately after that goal was disallowed.

Leeds head coach Uwe Rosler doesn't look best pleased on the bench, either.

Antenucci almost gets on the scoresheet as Jordan Botaka's excellent cross finds him unmarked 12 yards out, but the striker plants his header straight at Dimi Konstantopoulos.

Antenucci gets on the end of a deflected shot and scores from close range, and initially the goal is given. But the officials have a chat and then it's ruled out. Television replays show it's a very, very close call.

Watford won promotion from the Championship last season and much of their success was based on the goals of a potent front three - Troy Deeney, Odion Ighalo and Matej Vydra.

Ighalo netted a brace in Watford's 2-1 win at Newcastle last time out.

Take the two goals out of this game and it's been a fairly even contest. Both sides have had spells of possession, and both sides have tested the opposition goalkeeper.

But Leeds have gifted Middlesbrough their two goals, first failing to clear a cross allowing David Nugent to open the scoring, and then defender Giuseppe Bellusci heading a cross into his own net.

If Danny Baker fancies bringing out another "Own Goals and Gaffs" video, Bellusci's own goal would be a suitable inclusion.

New head coach Uwe Rosler has steadied things at Elland Road, with Leeds suffering only one defeat in their first eight games.

They've won only twice in the league, however, although those wins came in their last two away fixtures at Derby and MK Dons.

Chelsea fought back from two goals down to earn a point at Newcastle United, but the champions' stuttering start continues.

For a long time, it looked as though Newcastle would end their wait for a Premier League victory. They led 2-0 with 11 minutes to play, before Ramires and Willian secured a 2-2 draw.

"In the first half, from 0-10, we were minus one. It was that bad," he said.

"We were so poor, so bad. At half-time I said I was sorry I only had three subs as I wanted to change six."

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers can, at last, celebrate a Premier League victory.

His side's 3-2 win over Aston Villa was their first in five league outings, while Daniel Sturridge netted twice - his first goals since March.

Rodgers, who has come under increasing pressure from a section of Liverpool supporters in recent weeks, said: "There's a hysteria around the club.

"We've lost fewer games than Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal in all competitions - two. It's a huge club - a worldwide, iconic club - so the scrutiny on it is huge.

"The players gave everything - I am proud of them. There was a lot of focus on them but we handled it very well. We looked creative and dynamic today."

Wilson injury a huge blow - Howe

Bournemouth's2-1 defeat at Stoke City was compounded by the loss of top scorer Callum Wilson, who left the field on a stretcher early in the match.

The Cherries have already lost defender Tyrone Mings and winger Max Gradel to serious knee injuries this season, and manager Eddie Howe admitted afterwards that Wilson's injury "didn't look good".

The former Burnley boss added: "He took a whack to the knee, thought he was OK to carry on but then collapsed.

"It looks like it could be another serious knee injury. The players have had that three times this season, losing key players with bad injuries."

Sunderland and Newcastle remain without a win this season. They're joined in the bottom three by Aston Villa, who lost 3-2 at Liverpool on Saturday.

Stoke City moved out of the relegation zone with a home win over Bournemouth.

Chelsea, the side that were so dominant in the Premier League last season, are 15th. They've been down there for a few weeks now, but it still looks weird.

Manchester United took advantage of Manchester City's lunchtime defeat at Tottenham to go top of the Premier League table.

Goals from Memphis, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata gave United a comfortable 3-0 win over Sunderland, a result that took Louis van Gaal's side a point clear at the top.

"It's a nice feeling to be top of the table," said Van Gaal. "It's the first time in my period so I'm happy."  

Rooney's goal was his first in the Premier League this season, while Sunderland remain bottom of the table and without a league win this term.

City slip up at Spurs

A couple of weeks ago, many pundits were already crowning Manchester City as Premier League champions, so good was their start to the season.

But two straight defeats, the second of them a 4-1 loss at Tottenham on Saturday, have left manager Manuel Pellegrini with a little to ponder.

Pellegrini's cause wasn't helped by the absences of goalkeeper Joe Hart, captain Vincent Kompany and playmaker David Silva, as well as some questionable decisions from the officials at White Hart Lane.

"Two of their goals were offside," claimed Pellegrini. "I think we didn't play well in second half. The Premier League is always very difficult."

Manchester United are the new leaders after their 3-0 win over Sunderland. Manchester City drop to second following their 4-1 defeat by Spurs, who climb to fifth.

The day's other big movers were Arsenal, who are up to fourth after their 5-2 win at Leicester.
