    Southampton 0-2 Tottenham

Match of the Day commentator John Motson has just described Southampton as "off the boil". That just about sums it up. They are struggling to make any impact on this game as Tottenham, emboldened by their two goals before half time, are comfortable in their superiority.

It is very, very quiet at St Mary's.

    Southampton 0-2 Tottenham

Here is a chance for Southampton. Sadio Mane wins a free-kick on the left of the Tottenham box. Dusan Tadic strikes it low and hard but it is blocked by a Spurs leg. What a waste. And almost as a comment on the effort, the rain begins to pour.

Hope for Southampton lies in the fact that Spurs have lost more points from winning positions than any other side in the Premier League this season. And we all know that 2-0 is the most dangerous scoreline in football.

    Chris Sutton
Former Chelsea & Norwich striker on Final Score

"I just wonder if there was a bit of confusion in the Southampton defence, because Harry Kane was in an offside position in the middle. But Dele Alli runs off the the right-back and slots it in.

"For me the assistant referee was correct to wave play on."

"As it stands Spurs are heading into the top four, ahead of Manchester United on goal difference. Tottenham really should be targeting a top four finish."

  10. HALF-TIMEpublished at 45+2 mins

    Southampton 0-2 Tottenham

Two goals in four minutes have given Spurs complete control of this match. Two pieces of poor defending (along with at least one top-class finish) have been the difference in what has been an otherwise even game.

Southampton are imploding! Tottenham are flying! Kyle Walker advances down the right and is allowed to get all the way to the Southampton box before crossing low to the back post, where Dele Alli is completely unmarked and able to finish with ease. What was the home defence doing? They all stopped and simply let Alli score. Did they think he was offside? He wasn't and they have a mountain to climb now. Spurs completely in control.

"Brilliant finish from Harry Kane, once he got through.

"But Southampton's defending was comical - Kane ran through three challenges with no-one getting any contact on the ball or the man."

    Southampton 0-1 Tottenham

What a good goal from Harry Kane. He caps his 100th Spurs appearance with a goal of real quality as Tottenham charge forward first through Erik Lamela and then Dele Alli, who gets crunched just after flicking the ball on for Kane to beat Virgil van Dijk, run in on goal and finish superbly. That is the sign of a top-class striker - when the chance comes, it gets buried. That is 10 goals in Kane's last 10 games.

An offside flag denies Dusan Tadic the chance to potentially put Southampton into the lead as Graziano Pelle's pass beats the Spurs defence. Unfortunately for the home side, Tadic moved too soon.

Soon after, Harry Kane has his first sight of goal and drives low on target from an angle but Paulo Gazzaniga saves.

Tottenham have a free-kick 25 yards from goal. Christian Eriksen hits it straight into the wall before the ball is swung back in for Toby Alderweireld to head on to the roof of the net. This is proving to be a bit of a let-down after a promising start.
