You would forgive Tottenham fans for scratching their head in disbelief after their 14-game unbeaten league run - which included a thumping win against Man City and getting a draw at Arsenal - was brought to an end by relegation-threatened Newcastle last weekend. But such is the inconsistency of this season's Premier League.

Southampton have only picked up one point since 7 November and also recently got hit for six at home by Liverpool in the League Cup. But you still wouldn't bet against them winning today. Football, eh?

I suspect this is the fixture Mauricio Pochettino was looking forward to least of all this season. The man who helped turn Southampton into a Premier League force is back for a hostile St Mary's reception with the club for whom he left the Saints; Tottenham, who the Argentine is shaping along similar successful lines.

For the Saints fans, it is a bit like bumping into your ex with their new boyfriend/girlfriend, and discovering they look a little bit too much like you.
