  1. Berahino not as good this season - Pulispublished at 11:40

West Brom v Tottenham (15:00 GMT)

What's happened to Saido Berahino? The striker, according to West Brom boss Tony Pulis, is not fulfilling his potential.

The Welshman has called on the England Under-21 player to raise his game after scoring just three goals this season.

Pulis said: "We've played for six months without Saido being anywhere near as good as he was last year."

Southampton v Aston Villa (15:00 GMT)

    Martin Fisher
Match of the Day commentator at St Mary's Stadium

"If Southampton fans are feeling a bit sorry for themselves after the crushing League Cup defeat by Liverpool on Wednesday, they should spare a thought for their counterparts from the West Midlands.

"Supporting Villa has been challenging for a few seasons now but even the most optimistic Holte End regular will find it difficult to present a decent argument on how Remi Garde can formulate a rescue plan.

"The squad don't seem to possess enough quality, belief or desire to escape relegation.

"Already seven points adrift of safety, Villa have lost six successive away games since their opening-day victory at Bournemouth.

"They left the south coast that day with hopes raised but I doubt the trip home will be similarly enjoyable this time."

"We are still in a bad position - not a crisis," says Aston Villa manager Remi Garde, though the statistics suggest the Premier League's bottom club are heading for catastrophe.

  8. 'Garde has impossible job'published at 11:19

Southampton v Aston Villa (15:00 GMT)

Former Aston Villa midfielder Andy Townsend, speaking on Friday's 5 live Sport, on the club's current plight: "Seeing Villa where they are is absolutely desperate. I think they need some guidance and Tim Sherwood needed time, not necessarily pockets of money. I wouldn't have got rid of Tim. Remi Garde has got an impossible job."

  9. 'Years of decline will catch up with Villa'published at 11:16

Southampton v Aston Villa (15:00 GMT)

Aston Villa will not be able to claw their way out of relegation trouble, says former Scotland international Pat Nevin.

“Villa are in a relegation crisis and I will be surprised if they get out of this," he told 5 live Sport on Friday.

"That's because of the lack of belief in the group and because they have been in a slow gradual decline for a while. If you are in that long enough it catches you."

  10. Villa in big troublepublished at 11:13 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2015

Southampton v Aston Villa (15:00 GMT)

Where to start with Southampton versus Aston Villa? Saints' 6-1 midweek thrashing by Liverpool? Or Villa's dreadful start to the season?

Villa fans are probably fed up of hearing this, but their team have gone 13 league games without a win, equaling an unwanted club record originally set from March to September 2012.

It gets worse. All three of the previous sides with five points at this stage of a Premier League season went on to finish bottom of the division: Swindon in 1993-94, Sunderland in 2005-06 and QPR in 2012-13.

  13. MOTD commentator's viewpublished at 11:06

Man Utd v West Ham (15:00 GMT)

    Steve Bower
BBC football commentator at Old Trafford

"While the 'style' debate continues about Manchester United, it is difficult to argue with the facts.

"They are unbeaten at home this season and no visiting team has managed to score at Old Trafford in the last five games in all competitions.

"But the big question is how threatening will United be going forward?

"They will be wary of West Ham - who have won at Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool already, although those victories were all inspired by Dimitri Payet.

"With Diafra Sakho joining Payet on the injury list, the challenge of getting another headline-grabbing result has become even tougher."

West Ham aren't in the best of form, taking two points from the last 12 available, and they've failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last nine league games - the longest current streak in the top flight.

Rooney is probably ruing not being fit enough to face such a porous defence.

  15. 'Rooney needs to play in a team with pace'published at 10:59

Man Utd v West Ham (15:00 GMT)

Despite some Manchester United fans celebrating Wayne Rooney's absence with an ankle injury today, former Republic of Ireland midfielder Andy Townsend believes Rooney can still be effective for the Red Devils.

"I don’t subscribe to the theory that his legs have gone," he told 5 live Sport on Friday. "The biggest thing, I think, is that the team is too slow. Manchester United don’t have enough pace in that team.

"They are playing in third gear and that is one of the biggest reasons that hampers Wayne Rooney. He needs to be playing in a team with blistering pace, using his experience in the right areas and at the big moment."

  16. 'No Rooney might make difference'published at 10:56

Man Utd v West Ham (15:00 GMT)

How will Manchester United fare without Wayne Rooney? Former Scotland winger Pat Nevin thinks a pacier alternative up front could suit the Red Devils.

"I would rather not see Rooney as a centre forward," he told 5 live Sport on Friday. "He has nowhere near the pace that he once had or the pace you need to get beyond teams.

"So what happens is you keep the ball, play it slower and it becomes really static. If you put someone quick up there it lengthens the game.

"Manchester United don't have anyone going behind an opposition defence other than Anthony Martial. So take Wayne Rooney out and put someone quick up there, you might see a difference. When Rooney's back, I'd play him but not necessarily up front."

As was mentioned in the paper review, Wayne Rooney will miss today's match against West Ham and their key Champions League tie at Wolfsburg with an ankle injury.

"It's been getting worse," manager Louis van Gaal told MUTV. "We have to let him train to make the ankle stronger. He is training well in the rehabilitation."
