Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger: "Today the victory was very important. It was not so easy after the equaliser but we kept going. It was not so good after we lost three matches against Bournemouth, Norwich and Stoke, but we responded well.

“The team has character and you can see that. We tried to press. We tried to control the game and score goals. We’ve had chances to score goals. It was important to get two today.

“The influence of Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney is very important for us. They can score goals. It was an unbelievable goal from Wayne. Unfortunately, he couldn’t score against Chelsea, but I think he will be very happy today.”

    League One round-up

There have been plenty of goals in League One, where Chesterfield have sealed a 7-1 win against Shrewsbury. A Lee Novak hat-trick, combined with two apiece from Jay O’Shea and Rai Simons, did the damage

Coventry enjoyed a 5-0 thumping of Crewe, while Gillingham have beaten Bradford 3-0. Peterborough versus Sheffield United finished 3-2 for the Posh.

League leaders fell to a surprise 3-0 home defeat by Rochdale, which has allowed Burton to draw level at the top of the table.

  3. 'We didn't play well at times'published at 16:59 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2016

    Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

    Arsenal

Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny scored the only goal against Newcastle as the Gunners moved two points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

He says: "We need to be focused. Sometimes you can play well, today we didn't play well at times, but we won and that's the most important thing when you are fighting for the title."

Arsenal go two points clear of Leicester at the top of the Premier League thanks to a nervy, undercooked performance at home to Newcastle.

Leicester hit the 40-point mark and can now finally re-evaluate their aims for the season but they will look at it as two points dropped.

Manchester City can move to within a point of the Foxes if they win at Watford in the late game.

    Garth Crooks
Former Spurs striker on Final Score

"It's excruciating. It's absolutely excruciating. The ball bobbles around in the six-yard box for an age, and it falls to Jonny Evans, who I think is offside, by the way."

GOAL - Sunderland 3-1 Aston Villapublished at 16:50 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2016

    Jermain Defoe (90 mins)

This might be the poorest defending I've ever seen in the Premier League. Sunderland take a throw-in, there are FOUR Aston Villa defenders within spitting distance of the ball. Every one of them stands still and watches Ola Toivonen run past and square it to Jermain Defoe, and he drives home.

    Rubbish. Relegation awaits.
