Aston Villa are now winless in 17 Premier League games – only four teams have ever had a longer such run in the division. But Villa have some way to go yet.

Derby didn't win in 32, Sunderland 26, Norwich 21 and Nottingham Forest 19 – QPR also had a run of 17.

Party poopers

It feels a long time ago that Stoke swept Manchester United aside in the early kick-off.

Incredibly, that was United's first Boxing Day defeat since 2002 (1-3 at Middlesbrough) and only for the second time overall in the competition (P22 W18 D2 L2).

On the reaction of Chelsea fans to Jose Mourinho's sacking: "The fans have the right to express their minds on what happened - we must not underestimate that and give them all the freedom to do so. But we have to go on and that is my main concern now. We have to get the team fit mentally and physically.

"Every Chelsea v Manchester United game is big but this one is especially of course. I hope we can show the same ambition there that we showed in a big part of this game today."

Is it still possible for Chelsea to finish fourth? “It’s difficult. To be finishing fourth you have to win these games and also depend on your opponents. But I want to see the team showing that ambition until it is mathematically impossible."

'We could have made more'

Chelsea

Chelsea interim manager Guus Hiddink, speaking to BBC Sport: “At the end it is a fair result. You have to have respect Watford because they have been on a winning streak and have very decent strikers. But in the end I think we could have made a little bit more, we had some chances and it was a pity Oscar slipped for the penalty.

"Diego Costa, when he is focussed on what he is good at like today, he has his profit from his play. He will not be there [against Manchester United on Monday] which means we have to think a bit. [Eden] Hazard came back in the last week and had two training sessions and we hope he can be fully fit."

'Performance not a bottom one'

Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Remi Garde, speaking to BBC Sport: "I knew this game was crucial for us. I wanted to win. A draw was not the goal for this game.

"We only missed the points. What we put into this game was probably the best we can do.

"I think we deserved more than we got. I am frustrated and also a bit sad for my players. I am pleased with the performance.

"We are still in a very bad position but when I see my team play it's very encouraging.

"The performance we gave was not a bottom one. We have to score goals and be more efficient in the offensive parts."

Manager reaction

Norwich City

Norwich boss Alex Neil to BBC Sport: “Until they got the penalty and the first goal, there was nothing in it. Once we conceded the goal, they grew in confidence and we found it tough. There was not much between the teams in the second half but we came up against a side that played well and we didn't have the standard to match them.

"Defensively, we could have done better. We hit a lull after the first goal which is disappointing. We just did not have enough to get anything from the game,

"Goals change games, they scored a few, we did not score any.

"Teams in the bottom half of the table are crucial for us, the next one against Aston Villa - we know the importance of it. If we beat Villa, we will be at 20 points after half way and everyone talks about reaching the 40 point mark."

Manager reaction

Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: "After four games with no result, that was very important today. 

"Everybody knows of the quality of Leicester and what we had to do today was play simple football.

"The first half was really good and then we had to change. Christian Benteke was not warm [when he came on for Divock Origi], it's not easy to come into the game. 

"We made the goal, brilliant situation where the boys showed their quality in small situations. We were never really under pressure. 

"We had one of the biggest chances ever late on, six v one I think and no goalkeeper and then the ball was in our box."

Everton have had 77% of possession so far.

'We lack the quality'

West Bromwich Albion

West Brom Tony Pulis: "The lads have put a great effort in, but in the final third we sometimes lack the quality. They are disappointed, their spirit was fantastic, but we have to hope we get a little bit of luck. 

"There were two penalty decisions and you need referees to make the right call. Chris Brunt had a nailed-on penalty and you look at Callum McManaman’s at the end and it was a penalty again. 

"Roger East is close enough and as a Premier League referee you have to pick it.

"Hopefully on Monday we will play as hard as we did today and get the breaks."

'I am not happy'

West Ham United

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic (on Aston Villa's penalty):"I am not happy with that of course. From my point of view I saw Rudy Gestede was pulling Ogbonna's shirt. With that it gained him an advantage and he got in front of Angelo. For me it was a foul.

"He gave a penalty but if he gave that he should have given a penalty for one of the handballs for us.

"But it was a fair result."

'We showed great spirit'

Chelsea

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois: "We played a good game. Everybody was running and fighting and that is a good spirit. I think our game was good, we just had bad luck with those two goals. We showed good spirit in the second half, and the good thing is that we got the equaliser fast and went looking for the winner.

"The fans I think were behind us and that is good because we need the support. Whatever happens we have to stick by the team and by the club. Now we have to go with confidence to Manchester United."

'We have to be an awful lot better'

Sunderland

Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce: “We started slowly. We have been trying to get the players more organised and more resilient so they can play their way into the game. The only way you can do that is not concede an early goal, particularly away from home.

“Injuries aside, which is making things that bit more difficult, we have to look at ourselves and be an awful lot better.

“I’ve changed the side as much as I could, everyone has had a chance it is about what we can do in the window. I was hoping the players would show me more, but they have not done that since that third win. Now it is three wins in nine and six losses, we are in the bottom three again and that puts pressure on us and hopefully we can ease that in January by getting new players in.

“We lack consistency. We do OK in possession but it is what we do out of possession. Our position won’t be determined by what we did at Manchester City but you want to see a bit more fight than we saw today."

Concerned about relegation? “The fact of the matter is results are not good enough at the moment. The results have to turn and turn quickly. The way we are going at the moment it is where only a win will do and the way we are going at the moment we won’t win every game. Draws are also important. That is what kept Sunderland up last time.”

'We need to feel proud'

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino to BBC Sport: “I am very happy. I think we need to feel proud. The performance from the players was perfect, only the first 15 minutes was difficult but we managed the game very well.

“It is difficult to speak more about Harry Kane. For me, he needs to keep working hard and keep showing his qualities in the games. Dele Alli is another player we are very happy with but it is about the team and they showed confidence in how we played.

“It is very important that the squad believe and they can improve their performance after every session, it is only time before we can deliver success.

“It is not about what people say – we are a group but have not set a limit. We want to play the next game and get the three points."

'I hope the club get someone in'

Swansea City

Swansea caretaker manager Alan Curtis: "It is a huge relief. We have had a couple of performances that were better than today’s since our last win, but the three points are important now. 

"The effort and determination were excellent and we found a way to win. There were tackles and blocks players putting their bodies on the line and working and scrapping  - not the sort of football we normally play – but I thought we deserved it.

"I will do the job as long as the club tell me to carry on. If this carries on a little bit longer - if it is a case of carrying on to May - then so be it, but I hope the club can get someone in."

'We started to play too late'

Leicester manager Claudio Raneri: "We started to play too late. Liverpool pushed from the beginning and for this reason they deserved to win. 

"They showed a very good character and we tried to do our best but maybe in the first half we were too nervous to play our football.

"The second half was much better, but it is OK.

"Jamie Vardy played with a fever and I had to change him and Riyad Mahrez was very tired.

"Now we have to clean our mind and get ready for the next match [against Manchester City]. Another big rock."

'It took, in my eyes, a bad decision'

West Ham United

West Ham midfielder Mark Noble (on Aston Villa's equalising penalty): "It just seemed like Rudy Gestede was pulling all over his (Ogbonna's) back. I thought he was going to blow up for a free-kick straight away and we ended up getting punished.

"It took, in my eyes, a bad decision that cost us the game.

"We have played Swansea and Aston Villa away, two teams fighting for their lives. They are tough places to come. We had to roll our sleeves up and dig in.  

"Even though we are going through a rough patch, we are not losing games and we are picking up points. When we get our flair players and creators back we will be okay."
