Former Leicester manager on BBC Radio 5 live's weekend preview show

If you're picking up soft tissue injuries in training then you're doing something not quite right. Each club will have members of staff who are aware of the loading on the players

I'm not saying that this is the problem at Liverpool, but if the manager is listening to his staff then he will know if the players are being overloaded. The tools are readily available for all managers now.

There is a bitter chill in the air at Anfield but one thing we know about this fixture is the atmosphere at any meeting between Liverpool and Manchester United is red hot.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and his United counterpart Louis van Gaal make team selections that suggest they were both reasonably satisfied with 3-3 draws in midweek at home to Arsenal and away to Newcastle United respectively.

Klopp makes just one change, adding the solidity of Lucas in midfield in place of Jordon Ibe, while United are unchanged.

BBC Sport's football expert Mark Lawrenson pits his wits against a different guest each week this season - and he's predicting a tight one.

Lawro's opponent for the latest round of Premier League fixtures are Creed stars Michael B Jordan & Tony Bellew.

Everton fan and professional boxer Bellew plays 'Pretty' Ricky Conlan in the film, that sees Sylvester Stallone reprise his role as the former world heavyweight champion Rocky Balboa.

Balboa is trainer and mentor to Adonis Johnson - played by Jordan - the son of his former rival Apollo Creed.

Liverpool v Manchester United (14:05 GMT)

    Nigel Pearson
Former Leicester manager on BBC Radio 5 live's weekend preview show

"When you play against a side which is very structured in possession they're not going to hurt you quickly. Every side has got creative players and as long as they know their function in defensive system then they can cope with that.

"When teams play Manchester United they don't seem to be hurt when they win back possession. You can structure your system so that you don't get hurt. Sides with pace on the counter are going to prove to continue to be very successful."

  9. LVG identifies the key to the gamepublished at 13:43

Liverpool v Manchester United (14:05 GMT)

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has spoken to Sky Sports ahead of today's fixture. Here is what he had to say...

"Liverpool is a different team to Newcastle. It is a more pressing team and they take more risks. They have changed a striker for a midfielder from what I can see so maybe they don't take so many risks. We shall see? We shall have to see how the match develops.

"It shall probably be an open match and we have to adapt to that and read the game as a team. Liverpool can play football but we can do that the same. We have to read the game and beat the opponent.

"The key to the game is which team can keep hold of the ball under the pressure from the opponent."

  10. 'Disappointed in United'published at 13:41

Liverpool v Manchester United (14:05 GMT)

    Charlie Adam
Stoke City midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live's weekend preview show

"People are frustrated with Manchester United – they felt they'd be better this year than last season. It’s been difficult.

"Their 3-3 draw with Newcastle was like a basketball match – they should be controlling that game. They should have been out of sight. Defending and bad mistakes cost them.

"When we played them, they went back to front so many times. We’d never seen a Man Utd team turn the ball over so much. It was incredible. They lost the ball so many times in good areas. I was disappointed in them."

"But this is Liverpool's game of the season. It's massive."

Last time these two met it went very well for Anthony Martial, who scored on his debut in a 3-1 United win. The Frenchman scored four in his first four United games but has since netted just three times in 21 appearances.

He'll be starting on the left again today, no doubt to the frustration of a section of United fans.

  13. 'I thought United would be stronger'published at 13:27

Liverpool v Manchester United (14:05 GMT)

Louis van Gaal claimed this week that Manchester United fans were coming up to him in the street and praising their performance against Newcastle - despite not winning.

Red Devils fans have been unhappy with the playing style of Van Gaal's side and former Leicester manager Nigel Pearson says he is surprised by United's poor form under the Dutchman.

"Van Gaal will be frustrated by their results. By now he would have expected that everyone has bought into how he sees Manchester United playing," Pearson told 5 live Sport on Friday.

"I thought they would be stronger this season, much more together and effective, but they've had problems."

The teams news is, er, that there isn't much team news. Liverpool make just one change from Wednesday's 3-3 home thriller against Arsenal, while Manchester United name the same XI which started their 3-3 draw at Newcastle.

Experienced Brazilian midfielder Lucas comes in for Jordon Ibe, which means James Milner will play further forward. Again there is no recognised striker after Roberto Firmino's brace against Arsenal, with £32m summer signing Christian Benteke on the bench.

And Louis van Gaal's unchanged selection means that Spain playmaker Juan Mata remains on the bench.

Right, let's play a little game.

If you were putting the players of Liverpool and Manchester United into one giant squad, what would your starting XI be?

We've enlisted the help of SAM, the super computer built by Salford University professor Ian McHale and Tarak Kharrat, to rate every player in the two squads and come up with a "best XI". SAM takes into account a whole variety of stats and data, and has come up with the following.

Interestingly, Wayne Rooney isn't even close to selection - he's way down the list.

No prizes for guessing today's location. Liverpool's five European Cups - including the full size piece of silverware they keep permanently - are proudly on display as always ahead of the meeting with Manchester United at Anfield.

These fixtures were described as "the salt in the soup" by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. Defeat would have a sour taste for his opposite number Louis Van Gaal with his position still under intense scrutiny.
