After those midweek games, Steve Cotterill was sacked two days after Bristol City lost 2-1 at home to Preston.

In slightly bizarre circumstances, the 51-year-old announced on Thursday afternoon that the Robins would not be signing Bolton forward Zach Clough after the deal collapsed, and a few hours later he was dismissed after no win in seven outings.

Cotterill, who spent three years in charge at Burnley, won the League One title and the Johnstone's Paint Trophy last season.

Brentford fans will have noticed there was no place for centre-back James Tarkowski in the line-up and that is because he is being disciplined by the club for refusing to play.

The former Oldham defender is reportedly interesting a number of clubs, including tonight's opponents Burnley.

A statement on the Brentford website, external reads: "James Tarkowski will be the subject of internal disciplinary action after telling head coach Dean Smith that he did not wish to play against Burnley in tonight’s Championship match.

"Following discussions with Smith, Tarkowski declared himself unavailable for the fixture despite being selected in the starting line-up. As a result of these actions, he will be disciplined by the club.

"Tarkowski has been the subject of transfer bids during the current January transfer window but none have matched the club's valuation of the player. In fact, all recent bids have been substantially lower than one that was rejected last year."
