  2. FA Cup ties that influenced footballpublished at 11:08

For Premier League clubs, the FA Cup third round signals the start of their bid for cup glory.

In the past, though, it has been known to mean so much more than that.

It has been a round that has witnessed the turning point for at least two legendary managers, as well as the decline of a once great club and the resurgence of another.

Here, BBC Sport looks at some third round ties that arguably had a greater influence on a club's fortunes than simply progressing to the next stage.

Another reason to read this: it mentions flamethrowers!

That's a nice touch from Wycombe. Not sure the home fans will be quite so welcoming come 3pm, though. They'll be hoping their side channels the memories of Roy Essandoh.

  7. First game of the day...published at 10:55

Wycombe v Aston Villa (12:45 GMT)

Premier League stragglers Aston Villa look almost resigned to playing Championship football next season - and things could get worse yet.

League Two Wycombe have only beaten a higher-ranked side in the third round of the FA Cup once, defeating Grimsby in a replay in 2001. That was the season of course they made the semi-final, defeating Leicester City along the way.

Could this be their time? They may never have a better chance.

Players, staff and fans of both sides are arriving at Adams Park as we speak...

  8. Shock on the cards?published at 10:53

Everton v Dagenham and Redbridge (15:00)

    DagenhamImage source, .

Another one for the shock radar today is the game at Goodison Park, where Everton host Dagenham and Redbridge.

The Toffees have progressed from six of their last seven FA Cup third round games, but were eliminated on penalties against West Ham last season.

This is League Two Dagenham's first appearance in round 3 since 2012, where they held Millwall to a 0-0 draw at home before losing the replay 5-0.

Everton have progressed from each of their last seven ties against sides from a lower division than them in the FA Cup, winning the last two 4-0.

This is FA Cup third-round Saturday, though. Don't come round here, dragging us down with any cold, hard rationality. Get out. Go on, do one!

  10. More woe for Bolton?published at 10:48

    Eastleigh v Bolton (15:00 GMT)

    James ConstableImage source, .

As if life for cash-strapped Championship strugglers Bolton wasn't bad enough - they now face a National League side very much on the up.

Eastleigh were still playing in the Wessex League in 2003 but, four promotions later, sit fourth in the fifth tier of English football.

They have plenty of experience as well - as shown by the stats for striker James Constable above.

    Bolton beware.

  11. There is hope for Eastleigh...published at 10:43

Eastleigh, now fourth in the National League, are into the third round of the FA Cup for the first time in their 70-year history.

They are the only non league side left in the competition and they host Bolton today. I imagine it is probably the last place struggling Wanderers wanted to go today. Yep, even more then the dentist.

    Read about their history here.

  20. Eastleigh game in doubtpublished at 10:06

Eastleigh v Bolton (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

One of the most eagerly-anticipated of today's games (and a possible source for shock of the day) is that between National League side Eastleigh and Championship Bolton. It is just the kind of tie that makes FA Cup third-round weekend so special.

The sheer abundance of rain that has fallen on Ten Acres (as well as the rest of the country - it is wetter than the Titanic's tea towels in Salford) means the game had been in doubt.

    However, good news...
